What Makes an Ivory Ring Crack?

I have a Jerry -R- cue and the ring was cracked on it when I got it and was curious as to how this happened, the cue is 15 years old. The finish is still just fine on it even where the crack is. Here is a pic.

There are two possible answers I can think of, first the ring may have already been cracked, and second the expansion rate between Ivory and ebony are not equal. If the Ebony has expanded with time, which is natural to some extent it could have cracked the Ivory, especially if the Ivory had small un-noticeable cracks in the first place. I Have seen a few cues over the years where the Ebony expanded and cracked Ivory Diamonds. In most cases the inlay was raised up where you could feel it through the finish, but not always.

you might be pleasantly surprised when you get the finish off.it is a weird crack though if it is indeed a crack.

Are you sure that the ring isn't really just ivory colored plastic. Odds are it's something on the ring or in the finish itself.

Hey Lenny, It looks like a hanging fiber or platic strand from the black deco ring went un noticed and is now embeded in the finish. I don't believe it will affect the play of the cue. Also, if you handed the cue to 100 people to check out, I doubt that one of them would notice that flaw. I'd focus more on how the cue performs as a tool to stroke and pocket balls. If it came up short in that department, I'd sell it and go on to the next cue. JMO, ICBW.

Thanks guys for the replies, I am not sure if it is a crack or something under the finish, you cant feel it I will tell you that and it does not affect play, this cue plays excellent. I sent this pic to Jerry and he said to refinish the butt, fix the cracked ring and redo the leather would be $250 which is reasonable but if its not broke dont fix it right? I think I will wait until the cue needs a refinish in a few years and post back here whether the ring was really cracked or not. :grin-square:
