I play in BCA league 2 nights a week. I tried APA but it just wasn't for me. They just take way too much money from the players!
What percent of posters here shoot on leagues?

Played APA 8 and 9 ball in the past. Tap 8 ball until last year. I also played in a straight pool league 2 years ago. I had to stop because of the travel time (1 hour drive each way) on a work night.
Today I play in two in-house leagues a Monday night 8 ball, and Wednesday night 9 ball league. These leagues are much better in my current situation as they are over much earlier at night than Tap or APA.

Yep, he's the one. After he won our match, I told him he had already beaten his only competition so he was sure to win the whole thing. :grin: He did. But it wasn't as easy as I expected it to be for him. Terry was a 7 and I believe it was either his semi-final match or even the final match where he had to play a super sandbagger of a 3. That guy should have been at LEAST a 5.
I was rooting for Terry after our match because he seemed a classy player and nice guy with a lot of skill. I was also a 7 and had the lowest innings per game stats in the country. Sucked to fly clear to Orlando just for one match, but we got out and saw Disney World and Epcot the next day. :grin:
Terry can tell you about those pool tables too. Brand new and sitting on about 2 1/2" carpet. I found a sharp edge quickly. Sliced my arm from the elbow to the wrist... not that it bothered my game or anything.
Mike Bandy was also one heckuva a player and went on to win the Nationals down in St. Louis. He and I played about even in those days but I think he had me edged a little at 8 or 9 ball. Close call though. My strength was 10' snooker and there just weren't any tables up in that part of the country then.
APA and BCA for me. However, I'm disillusioned on league play anymore. I'm not the "top dog" in either league, but I don't think league play offers me any advancement in my abilities any longer. It's fun to get together with friends and have a competitive format to play in, but I think league play eventually creates a ceiling for improving your skills due to the structure of leagues.

as you improve, move to tap and bca or possibly apa masters division.
Now that's the one league I could really get into. I think that is the best league for high-ranked players. Sadly, we don't have enough interest in the area to run one. Just some qualifying tournaments for one spot to Vegas.

How could anyone answer this question? We would need every poster to come on the thread and say if they do.... or if they don't.
So by a conservative estimate, maybe there are 4000 or so active posters on here, once they all reply, we should be able to get a "percent of all posters here that shoot on leagues"

I play in a BCA league here in the SF (East) Bay Area. I've been playing for about 4 years and am a solid mid-level player and improving each season. We use a what I feel to be a very fair handicapping system.
What makes this league good IMHO is simply that it's filled with a full spectrum of players, who for the most part are very serious about their game, and with only a couple rare exception, everyone is very respectful w/ regards to etiquette & rules. It is both competitive and fun. I've never seen any instances of deliberate sharking, and very very little evidence of sandbagging. It is both competitive and fun. In the last couple years, I've only come across one team where it seemed their ranking was well below their known skill levels. It's hard to say if they were sandbagging or just got there arse's handed to them by a few better teams. Getting run out on a few times can seriously drop any players average, and there's not a damn thing the player could have done about it. Just the way the balls roll...
I will say the Handicapping system does force better players to keep playing well. As far as I can tell, there's no ceiling on how far you can advance as a player. The number 1 team in our league has been number one for years, and the handicapping system has even been raised to give other teams a better chance of getting into first place, and it's still no easy task.
And just to tell you how good the number 1 team is, they have the 2008 BCA Nationals Senior Womens Champion on the team, and of the six people on the team, she has the lowest average ranking. (Read: Ugh) - My only league-related chest-puffing claim is that earlier this year I was able to win my game with her with my Bridge arm in a full-length bent elbow cast 8 weeks after falling off a 40' cliff. :smile: (I got lucky pulling off a few solid shot-makers in a row to take the game.)
From everything I've read here, I think any APA league would drive me batty in short order.

APA 9-ball and 9-ball league. May start playing Moose league as well since one of my players asked me to join his team.
