What sets the market price for a cue?

.....
so if Searing can get $3000 for a house cue with a little work, its because someone thinks its worth it or that it will be worth it one day.

Not directed at you king t, but some other posters.....

I'm sure Dennis (or any other cue maker) is getting rich from the secondary market selling cues that he made over 10 years ago (and sold for < $500).

In other words, if you want to talk about "hype" on the secondary market, fine. But don't drag a cue maker's current prices into THIS discussion.

Tony gets big bucks for his cues now. Wonder why...... Wait...... maybe because he paid his dues for years and now people want to pay for the product he produces.

The OP thinks $3k for a conversion is too high. Great for him. Don't buy it. But don't disparage one cue maker to prove your opinion of another cue maker. Buy or don't buy. Let your dollars do the talking.

Scott <<== lusts for that elusive "big daddy" cue some day

My question was rhetorical. You, I and many others all ready know the answer. Your answer above describes it best. Regarding Searing, I own a basic 4 point and love it. The craftsmanship is unequaled to any cue I own, period! Points are perfect and the look is beautiful. It does hit very well but I prefer the hit of my old Schon and I absolutely love the hit of my old Cog over it. Regarding the Searing Dufferin cue, I would say that if Dennis made a shaft for it and did some ring work and joint work to it that I would be a buyer at no more than $600.

Again, good luck to all of the buyers and the sellers.

Funny thing is I scroll though the For Sale section all the time. And when I see a Dufferin house cue conversion done by Searing for sale for $3,000 I just laugh. I can understand the art thing but $3,000 for a sneaky pete.

I just wonder who actually buys these things?

Give me a break...

See thread below...

Thank you for your inputs. For the record I did not buy the Dufferin sneaky pete for $3,000 just as you recommend and I started this thread to have this discussion. That's the whole point of this thread. If you don't agree with my post I welcome your input. I can not be convinced that a Dufferin conversion is worth $3,000. Maybe you can but I can't. I'm not drinking that kool-aid ever but maybe you are and that's fine. And for the record I own a basic Searing 4 pointer. I am a buyer not a seller.

I mentioned nothing about current pricing of a Searing. But I can tell you it would not be $3,000 if you could convince Searing to do a Dufferin conversion today.

I did let my money do the talking and offered $600 for the Dufferin sneaky. And how did I disparage Searing?

Yah!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Frankly, anybody buying or selling a Dennis Searing cue knows what the potential value is. Those that don't know about them, well, they just don't know. (period). Whatever those uninformed (or?) people say has absolutely no impact on the value of the cue and are only helping promote the sale.

Please, you can not compare one of Dennis' works of art with a Dufferin Sneaky conversion. I am very informed about Mr. Searing and his cues. Are you saying a Dufferin Sneaky conversion is a $3,000 monster? And please don't give me the supply and demand bla, bla and don't say it's worth what someone will pay, yada, yada.

Your gut feel RayJay, will the market pay $3,000?

YES or NO

I think a Searing conversion would bring close to 3K in a no reserve eBay auction listed by a seller with a great reputation that gets eBay's highest promotional exposure. I have never been able to test this thought because I have not been able to buy one for 2.5K (an amount I feel confident I could safely expect to cover in an auction) to find out. The fact that nobody who owns one is willing to sell it for 2.5K may (or may not in some eyes) say something about the market for one of these cues.

To me (a guy who's idea of market is established at eBay auction with no reserve):

a Searing conversion - 2.7 to 3.25K (although I have no selling experience)

a Balabushka conversion - 4K to 5K (I've sold 2)

a Gina conversion - 2K plus or minus a few hundred (sold about 5)

a Tad conversion - 1.5K to 2K (I've sold about 5 of them)

I saw a Gus conversion get sold but I can't remember the price, I'm guessing it was 5K.

Thanks

Kevin

Kevin,
Really? Are you talking about $40 Dufferin house cue sneaky pete conversions above where someone adds a joint collar, new pin, new shaft and butt ring? Or are you talking about a titlist style conversion? Big difference right?
Regards,
Mark

Conversions. I think it was in this thread I posted one of the Balabushkas I sold on eBay. I don't know if it was a Dufferin (my buyers know every detail I don't have to) but it was a "house" cue George started with (like Searing). The Balabushkas go in the 4K range, Searings sell in the high 2K range.

Thanks

Kevin

Well if you say so...

I don't own one. I assume you don't own one. That means either:

1) we don't have the money to buy one

or

2) we don't see the value in them

but what value we might or might not see in a thing has nothing to do with what someone else might see in it. A guy selling a Searing conversion does not need everybody in the world to see 3K value in it, he only is seeking one (one with 3k to spend).
Me, I need at least 2 (bidders).

You want to see what a Searing conversion is "really" worth? Let a guy list a nice one for sale on AZ for 2K and see how long it lasts.

Thanks

Kevin

PS: Add Bill Schick to my list of values I know as I just sold a Schick conversion with one shaft and a ding on eBay for $810.

Kevin,

I respect what you are saying. And I respect that your livelyhood comes from buying and selling cues on Ebay. And it's in the best interest for all of the folks out there that are over-invested in pool cues to keep cue futures at the maximum possible level. Me on the other hand as a buyer have the right to have my voice heard. And I say don't spend $3,000 on a $40 Dufferin conversion.

If you are saying you are entitled to your opinion, of course you are. Like any consumer all day long every second of every day deciding not to buy something because they don't personally see the value in it.

Again, the seller of any collectible article isn't looking for a consensus of value, he's looking for one buyer. Myself, I'm looking for at least 2. I'll try to keep in mind that you aren't a buyer for the first one I get. I'm on Dennis's list, but after 10 years of waiting, I don't think it will be a conversion I will choose get from him. But I am betting that before my number does come up, I will have a Searing conversion from the secondary market. I'll get that cue verified by Dennis and then I'll offer it in a no reserve auction on eBay and we will see what the market will bear. I do understand that you won't be a bidder.

Thanks

Kevin

Kevin,

What is stopping you from buying this one?

Could it be related to price?

Or would you prefer a Valley Conversion?

Thank you. Too expensive.

If you need to put words in my mouth in order to make your point have at it.

What I typed was I thought that cues were "right at market". If you seriously interpret that as "too expensive" then good luck to you.

You can be a real jerk sometimes Kevin. For the record I have bid on some of your auctions. No words in your mouth. They are too expensive for you to feel comfortable you will make money. Fair enough because the point of being in business is to make money. I assume you would feel better if you could pick them up at a price much, much lower and so would I. Good luck to you too Sir.

No directed at me, but I'll take a stab. I know for a fact that the secondary market has paid that, near that, and even over that # in the fairly recent past. What the future holds, who knows ??

If you think they're overpriced, then go trade into a few and cut them loose here on AZ for the $600-800 they should be priced at.

Btw, I happen to agree they are overvalued at these kind of figures......but that's just me, and it doesn't mean somebody should have to give them away. It is what it is......nothing to get spacey about or lose any sleep over either.

Best of luck.
