I don't know if this has been done before as a poll. I'm curious from a statistical standpoint what level players aspire to, if any at all (which is fine).

I'm not talking pipe dreams, only answer pro if it is a goal you are aiming for and feel that you can attain. In otherwords not, "I could get there if I had more time" or "It'd be nice if I could play like"

I'll use what I believe is the New York system Pro, Open, A, B, C, D. I believe more people subscribe to this understanding than not.

I'd love to be an 'A' player, and, I believe it is in my reach.

Not the knitting forum? I was all ready to talk quilts and blankets and stuff! I'm a beginner for now, but I figure no matter what level you reach you can always get better.

I'll be happy when I reach "A" on a bar box again. I believe I'm a "B+" now and just need to get the mental side of the game back. The desire and time praticing comes and goes, so that is holding me back right now. Some say because I ran 96 balls on a BB in hundreds of tries makes me an "A" player already...it does not. I honestly have no idea what speed I am. We have a different rating system here in Canada, and I haven't yet figured out how that translates into 'normal' ratings.

In either case, I just play for fun. As long as I'm improving, then I'm content.

pool???

i know i am not getting better...thus i practice only to get "LUCKY"
Luck is better than skill!!!

The more I improve, the more my definitions of pro, A, B, C change. I have been rated by other people as an A player as early as 3 years ago and have improved greatly since then, but still don't feel like an A player. Some people that I considered pros back then I would consider solid A players or shortstops now. As for how far I want to go with my skill level, I want to be a threat to anybody who plays me. Not just if the stars align, but I want to have a noticeable win/loss ratio against even the best of players.

The poll asks what level I aspire to and in that regard I aspire to the highest level I think I could possibly achieve - shortstop or "open" I guess.

The thread title asks what level I'm working towards and that would be the level just above where I'm at right now. I consider myself a "B" player currently (meaning to me that I'm fully capable of beating the 9 ball ghost in a race to 7-11 on a 9' table, but I do less than 50% of the time). So I'm working towards becoming an "A" player, meaning I can beat the ghost more than 1/2 the time.

I have had to work a full time and a part time job since I was 21. I'm 50 this past April. For 10 of those years, I worked a full time job and two part time jobs. I had a growing family to support. I don't regret taking care of them.
But, in Nov 2006, I quit my part time job and only worked full time. Always practiced when time permitted. Played since I was 11 so I had thousands of hours at the table. But the practice and playing really picked up after my schedule freed up some. My goal was to be competitive in any senior competition. I can honestly say that I was never playing so good in my life as I had in 2007-2008. I wanted to play at Grady's in one of his events.

Then the back surgery in April 2009 followed by that infection that put me back in the hospital. I was basically on my back for 6 months. And I have not been able to hit one ball since. Can't bend over enough and I refuse to shoot standing straight up ala Alfredo DeOro!
I hope to someday be able to run a rack of 8 ball and 9 ball again. My high run in 14.1 was only 41 but I was trying to up that by specifically practicing 14.1, which is one of my favorite games. Now, I'd be thrilled to run 41 ever again.
Once I get loosened up some, I do intend to work hard at pool again. It's the funnest (word?) thing to practice!

I"ll just pay attention to what level everyone else is aspiring to.

I'm trying not to talk about myself as much so I'll just say that I voted in the poll and will listen to what others have to say.

Honestly, I just want to play better. Although I'm willing to be helpful when it comes to describing rankings, I'm not very concerned about them in regards to my own ability. I want to continue improving for as long as I can and be competitive against anyone I go up against. I'll let other people decide what my ranking should be.

Around here we have Pro, Master, AA, A, B, C. I'm not sure how that translates into your ranking system. I'm rated master but I'm nowhere near a pro. The Masters really have a wide skill level. All can run racks. Some are state champs. Some just beat all the AA players and wouldn't have a chance against the top Master players. Some of them forget how to miss somehow and turn pro.

Out of curiosity for the people choosing pro, it's your end goal correct? In other words your aiming to become a professional level player at some point in your development? If so, excellent. If not, I'm interested in what people are trying to achieve.

Are there any concrete, clear definitions for these 'rating' things?
It all seems a bit random to me. Especially when you see things like A+, AA, AA+, etc.
