What to do about Duckey ?

Ok, I need you guys to help me out with a small dilemna.

I am not a big money player, MOF I play small just B/C it makes the game a little more serious.

So I am at one of the poolhalls I attend ,and notice on the same day, same time this guy is always there. Once he had his GF/wife with him, but he was still putting in some serious practice. He was always glancing over toward my table which made me in turn keep an eye on him.
About two months ago, I see him there(for like the fifth time). He comes over sez hi, and compliments my shooting. I tell him its drill time as there are a few things I like to do specifically on a ninefooter. He asks me if I'd like to play. (I have him clocked B+ to A-). I tell him sure, But I have been here almost two hours already and need to leave in thirty mins or so. He says "No problem , how bout nine ball race to five?" I say "ok, but I think you are a lil better than me" (I'll call him "Duckey" from here on)
Duckey "I'll give you two on the wire"
Me (thinking) two on the wire,........ IS HE SERIOUS ?!?
Me "Are you serious ? Thatsa heavy spot."
Duckey "It's ok, two on the wire race to five for twenty. I like the stress."
Me "OK, But I am out in 30minutes,..... I gotta be at work." Promise me whoever wins we getta rematch"
Duckey "ok"
We lag: I win lag
I break sinking one but leaving two clusters. We go back & forth on safes till the five ball. I run out from there. I GET GAME 1
3-0 on the wire.
I broke dry (WTF?), and he gets to the eight. Has to go cross table for a bank and get position on the nine which is sitting between diamonds on the headrail. He scratches on the eight in the side but makes the eight. I get BIH and GAME 2.
4-0 on the wire. I felt a lil bad for him and pretty much gave up Game 3
4-1 on the wire.
He breaks potting 1 ,but leaves the nine an inch from the side pocket he scratched in two games ago. I smile and say "Thatsa helluva place forthe nine !"
He intentionally pots the nine bringing it back to the footspot. The three, six,& seven ball were clustered right between spotted nine and the side pocket it was sitting near.
before his intentional foul. I shot the three-nine combo for the side between the six & seven for the win.
Duckey says "I wanna rematch!!"
Me "Sure but its gonna have to be next time, i'm outta here, I got 5 minutes left.
Duckey (Disgusted) throws his Jackson on the felt

I seen duckey about half dozen times since then - each time offering him a rematch. Each time he's given a lame excuse. I even gave him my # and told him to call me when he had some time --- to no avail.

I'll even change the spot, I just wanna play him again (but he has to suggest that now)., I'm TIRED of holding his 20 in my wallet! Been over 2 months now.
What do I do with Duckey ?!?

(Sorry its so long, just wanted to give the whole story for perspective)

enjoy the cash

btw 2 going to 5 is a lot of weight if you can play some. he has to win 5-2, or 2.5 games for every game you win to break even. Thats hard to overcome if you can run out here and there.

get 3-8 and he might play you then he has to win 8-4 or 2-1 in games, big difference.

short races are a joke unless your just coming up and play lots of them in a row, i can give a good C+ player that and win , if i'm 100% instroke a B- player. thats in California terms, the letter system for speed varies greatly from place to place.

I say go enjoy yourself a burger on Ducky. Could be that even though he was watching you practice he didn't judge your skill good enough then got completely embarrassed. Do you ever notice him gambling with anyone else?

I guess I just don't understand that part of being tired of holding HIS twenty?? You won it, you earned it, that makes it YOUR twenty. Go spend it if it's too heavy in your wallet.

Jcrack_corn...Baloney. Time was up, and the OP had to go. Getting to work on time is much more important...especially since this had been discussed already! The guy obviously doesn't want to play, as he has had several chances already for a rematch.

if u had 5 mins left u should have offered DON one game or 6 ball race to 2

mr dunn, please feel free to seek me out i love to hold other peoples 20s.if you prefer we can play for it but i will save you the extra time if you wish.

The way I see it

Hi guys,
Thanks for your answers !

Fatboy : I knew it was a heavy spot,, Even told him so in order for him to "adjust" it.
HE wanted it that way. ok

Rio & Bambu : yeah, I'm gonna enjoy the 20,

Neil: I don't really consider it MY 20 b/c I promised him a re-match. I can still win it
or lose it.

Scott : You got that right 5 mins is time to unscrew and pay my TT. I LOVE pool, but
a job is more important.

Bob : You are right, But I think the onus is on him to change either the spot or
the game.Honestly, In a game of 1P, I think my chances are 50/50 at best
with him going to 8. Going to 11 ,....... forget it he has me.

I think he had a bout with "Gamblers curse." He felt he had to play , and I was there. That is why he would offer a race to 5 , it fit the time window. He approached me so late , we cudda done races to 9 ,and had some time left over if we started when we first get there. I spoke to the guy at the desk about him, (I know him, but not too well). He says he comes in for all the local weekly tourneys and does pretty well.( 8- ball & 9-ball) I can believe that which is why I wanna play him again.

oh, as far as clocking someone, I have found 2 ways that gets me close. (in this case it was good)

1- 10-ball speed test
2- Hopkins Q-skill rating

you guys must be way smarter than me. he said he would play for 30 mins, then unscrews after 25 mins...(a 15 percent discount).

it is definetely nitty...a lot could have been done in 5 mins... anyway...op already knows he nitted it up and doesnt feel right about it, hence the thread.

and just for clarification if you guys agreed to One set only(rather than 30 mins) then that is different (and fine), but most non nits would still give the guy a chance to DON just for good faith over 20 bucks

no wonder why there so many threads about gambling being dead on the pool scene

You need some reading comprehension skills. The OP did not say he would play for 30 minutes, he said he had to LEAVE in thirty minutes.

But I have been here almost two hours already and need to leave in thirty mins or so. He says "No problem

Well I had seen him once again in the last week at a different poolhall. He was nice and we spoke breifly ,but then upon asking him if he will be "practicing" this week, he suiddenly tended to his friend playing on a nearby table. THAT was enough for me!

The intent of my post here was how to get a way to play this guy again without practically begging him for a few sets. (Now, I know how a teenage girl feels when I never called after a 1st date) I guess I will have to see this guy in a tourney sometime in the future.(I work nights, and the local weekly's are during the week in the evening). Dunno when that will happen, but I am sure we'll cross paths again.
When we do I got a feeling its gonna be interesting.

I honestly don't know what his problem is as he is about a ball better than me. :frown:

Maybe he just doesn't enjoy your company.

I had that thought too, but we can talk and have a conversation. He just doesn't want to play me.

I have someone who won't play me at all, unless in a tourney at my home poolhall. We were both the same speed about a year ago. He decided to play 5 times /wk and a better player took him under his wing. Now (he feels) he is too good to play me, but likes to offer all kinds of advice regarding equipment and the latest & greatest.
He is currently a S/L above me and I beat him in both 8 & 9 ball in matches with out the handicap.

Why you buggin the man? He does not want to play with you now, get over it!:grin-square:

Sounds like you tried, stop stalking the fish.

I guess he prob doesn't feel he is better than you, or there is something offensive about you that he does not want to endure.

move along, find somebody else or play with yourself.

There are a few people who I really like and like to be around, but I simply hate playing pool with them.

One guy is an absolute redneck, totally just himself, fun and funny, but put him on a pool table and he puts his earbuds in, hits everything too hard (too bad, because he is a good shot), complains about missing, gives way too many insincere compliments...I abhor playing him.

Another dude is a guy who will spend four minutes racking and still miss putting the one on the spot. He plays way too slow and will complain anytime he misses shape...which is often. Sit next to him at the bar and I love the guy.

Point taken, and Ty for the reply.
He is a very serious, quiet player, an inwardly emotional type. I seen it in him when he scratched on the 8, I made no comment. I did comment about the 9-side snap attempt. he didn't like either the shot or the comment I made.

Think you meant play by myself, lol. Drills are ok, but I can't do them for the entire practice session.

Funny, you basically just described me.

I'm not overly serious, but I come off that way because I am very analytical. Unless someone knows me well and I trust them, comments such as the 9-side thing could get to me.

Let him know it isn't about winning more money from him. Tell him that you enjoyed playing the set, appreciate his game, etc.. You can ask him if the comments bothered him and offer apologies.

Kudos for thinking this through.

Thanks!

Obviously words of wisdom.
I only commented about the 9-ball because I felt it was clearly obvious. I wasn't trying to get under his skin or be a wise-azz.
