What would you do here?

If that's really you, I can tell you either work at Mickey D's, or you are a pool player. I'll take the 7. Call 7 if you want to complain about it.:D

Come on man, isn't it obvious who needs weight here?

:grin-square:

Neil, it looked like one would be able to get to the same place that you did without running into the seven, using top right and speed, ...but I'm sure that you saw it much better than I did. :)

It's difficult to see the angle - if the cue can pot the 3 and come back without hitting the 7, but if so, here's a lukewarm safe play. Against an opponent that is a couple balls lower than you, with the match in essence being a race to 2, like a prior post stated, minimize risk.

yup, i don't see you getting an effective safety without much luck so just go for it..

cut it with heavy inside then safe on the 4.

I thought of Neil's shot, which requires a precision hit on the 7. I don't like the rolling CB, as the chance of hitting the 7 after the bottom rail is high, imo, whether you have sidespin or not. I like the safety option here. Thin the 3, with a little inside spin, and bank it below the 8, to the bottom rail. The CB travels back up the middle of the table to the opposite short rail. Chances are good that you hook your opponent on the 3, and if not, there is no easy shot option.

When you are a long way from home and betting all your cash this is
a very resonable selection.
...and that's how you should judge any decision....

I liked Kat's option and it was my first instinct. Neil's sounds good on paper, but they always seem like the right choice after they work out. What if it hits the 7 thinner and comes down the middle of the table and leaves him hooked? Or fatter and it goes towards the 9 or side?

Shape off a carom cannot be all that certain though it seems like a playable gamble. But if I absolutely wanted to win rather than absolutely wanting to get out, I play the known lockup safety on the 4. Might wanna miss on the "pro side" of the 3 if you need to hit with a lot of inside to beat kissing the 7 :P

I liked the safe behind the 5 option that others mentioned, it's a productive safety that cleans up the table. It's the shot I would probably play if I was up against a solid player. I get a lot more nervous playing safes against weaker players though, they go after crazy kicks and shots that no sane or knowledgeable player would attempt and sometimes, they get lucky.

Congrats on running out, I'm going to have to try that one tomorrow. I love the feeling of finding a way to get on a ball that at first glance looks impossible and then pulling it off.

That's a pretty cool shot, Neil. For me, however, I'd never play that shot unless I was playing a total donkey.

Once again, thank you for putting these types of threads up.They are truly a great mental exercise, especially for us lesser-experienced players.

I would never had thought out what Neil did, and certainly could never have seen what TX Poolnut just suggested... I was concentrating on the 3 and leaving myself in position to even get at the 4. Not seeing the whole table. Shows how little experience I have, don't it? ;)

I would LOVE to see these sorts of posts more frequently, or perhaps a sub-thread in the Instructors Forum. Perhaps all the previous threads of this nature could be collected somehow, in one spot? Dreaming, I realize, but if it were available, it would be a great learning tool for us lower-level players.

Thanks again, Neil, and everyone posting here.

Great shot, Neil. I'm in the group that would play a safe, either right here on the 3 or on the 4 like KoolKat said, since I think that's a higher percentage play. But it sure does feel good when you play a shot like Neil's to perfection.

The one thing I definitely wouldn't do is play the 9. It's a missable shot, and if you miss that there's a good chance the 9 will hang in the pocket. It's a race to 2 now; why risk hanging the 9 and giving a weaker player the chance to win a quick game?

hee-haw, hee-haw ( donkey noise )

Neil's shot was my first consideration since it appeared the easiest
way to go. But even if I'm betting, money is not my first objective.
It's the challenge that enthralls me. When I see the money ball rear
it's ugly head so close to my OB and that lower right corner thumbing
it's nose at me , with or without a carom off of the 8, that thar cheese is goin' for a ride!:woot:

Seriously, Neil, what a nice shot.:thumbup2: I dont have the
brains to contemplate it nor the skill to pull it off.
