What would you do?

I play in a non APA in house league. Our team used to consist of 6 players me and another guy I'll call Bob our the main 2 players and we handle most of the tougher matches. Two sessions ago Bob brought 3 other good players onto the team, sounds good right?

Well Bob, kept pushing for our better players to play every week last session so that we could get all the points we can. Now we have 3 players on our team that never get to play and I feel guilty playing every week. So at the end of the session I said some changes need to be made or I would have to find another team for next session.

Changes were made, the 2 he brought on left the team (no hard feelings) but at the last minute Bob added another one. And now he has started pushing his point again that the better players need to play every week so that we can get points.

Our players that are getting left out were c to c- players and now there confidence has dropped along with their handicap. They are now d players. I am not the captain of our team. Our captain is one of the guys that doesn't get play very often and he doesn't want to stand up to Bob so I end up doing it.

What it boils down to is Bob and I got different goals. ALL he cares about is winning and i want to see our team grow instead of sit on the sidelines. I got a feeling that I am going to have to start my own team next year..... what would you do?

I would take him aside or or meet-up someplace privately and tell him that exactly. It sounds like you have an almost even split, you could take the people you want to play and Bob can take his players and there you have two teams.

I would also stand up and when Bob puts up a player who's been playing every week say, "No, Joe over here hasn't played in weeks. F*** the points, he's playing."

Gotta Second that. I'm one of the newer players that wants to play every week. We started my sececond session of APA last night. No one wants to win more than me, but everyone needs to get a fair shake. Last session we had two girls that were both SL2's (one my girlfriend). We let them alternate each week so they each got a pretty even split of games. They even surprised everyone with a few wins out of it too!

I have said numerous times that I would rather play on an average team with people I like rather than a stacked team with people I am indifferent to.

Personally, I am more about the team and ensuring that everyone gets to play rather than going all out for the win all of the time.

If I were in this situation I would probably find another team to play on.

Sounds Like You're In A Pickle

If it were me, I would start my own team. Guys like Bob are always going to want to win at the expense of the lower SL players.

If your league is like mine there is a total number of matches each night...for example at mine there are 5 matches...I usually try to match skill for skill and if we win the first couple or even have won 3 that makes our over all evening a WIN. I then play the weaker players, using the opportunity for good coaching and developement without a regard to whether they actually win or not. The times I have been the coach/captain my teams have won the session. They have ranged from "stacked" teams all the way down to all girls rated a 2 and me...our team was named "Dueces Wild" and we killed them! So my advice would be, try to manage the overall session numbers, realizing you have 3 or 4 months, and give the little guys some play instead of trying to "win" every single night.

That pretty much sums up our VNEA team. We're motivated and focused most of the time. One night, 2 of us may have to hold up the other two and it might change the next week.

We are lucky that in our Vegas league, all the teams are like this with the exception of one team that likes to stack and sand bag.

Its not fair to the lower handicap players to come out and not play. How are they going to get better if they aren't given a chance.

We use League Central to manage our league. They have a Leader Board within. We can always strive to do our best and watch our individual achievements while supporting our team.

You know what you have to do already, let the C's know what your plans are for next year so they know that you have good intentions on their behalf and start a new team.

It doesn't cost that much to go to Vegas anyway and you guys can make plans to attend no matter how you do in the standings.

Hey Chris, if I were you, I would start my own team next session for sure. You have to be a strong SL 7 judging from your videos(btw, are you using a masse cue and a jump cue?) you should have no problem feilding a solid team that has diverse enough skill levels where everyone gets to play thier fair share & still have a chance at high points for the session. I'm an SL 6 and we will split our team after the City's in June, we got too top heavy, but everyone had a fair share of games on my team over the past 3 sessions and we finished high points consecutively. I can't imagine your C & C- players not playing, they are probably SL 4's & 5's by APA standards, you have to let the lower SL's play or you'd exceed the 23 handicap every time and have to forfiet matches. Best of luck to you.

First, I would like to thank everyone who answered. It just confirms what I have been thinking for awhile now. Next year, new team. I think it's really the only answer that solves the problem.

And I will look forward to seeing Bob racking the balls for me! :p

Hi Bill, thanks for the kind words. Yes I use a jump cue and a masse cue (now that I have one!) I don't know where I would land in a APA league but I know that my game has plenty of areas that could always use some improvement. We play 5 matches a night so i think I am going to start a team with 5 consistent ant players and 1 alternate. I dont care what their skill level is as long as they have a decent attitude. I'm already looking forward to next year!

I don't see how only good players are playing every week whey they have a handicap limit. What is the rating of these good players?

Our league limit is 24, our handicaps range from 2 - 6. If all the good players are a 6 then obviously you cant play them all but this isn't always the case. At the end of the session we had 3 players that only got to play one game. Which is ridiculous.

Your handicap goes up or down each week depending on if you won or lost last week. It's not APA, there are no innings or any of that.

Sounds to me like you have too many players on the roster. If you feel this strongly about it simply start your own team.
