This has bothered me for the last 5 or so years. So I am hoping that venting here will cleanse my conscience.

Our APA team was in Money Cup. Before the match they have a break the 9 for $1000. Well luck would have it I did and collected the money. My team captain congratulated me and we proceeded to play in the money cup.... We lost the first round because only half of the team showed up. So later on that evening I get a phone call from the captain that asked that I bring the $1000 to the bar and give it to her so that they can divvy it up between the players on the team. I reluctantly did it because I was part of the team and it was a team event. The truly shizzy thing about it was it was given to people that I never met. They never showed up for league night and they certainly were not there for money cup, not to mention the others that did not show up for the tournament. So what was $1000 ended up being $125.

Is it right that I be upset about this? Should I be happy that I got 125 and move on? It still sits as a black mucky ball in my stomach! (Let's all assume that the captain gave everyone their share, I don't think I could bear the thought otherwise).

NO WAY! Unless there was an agreement before that all winnings were to be split up among the team. At the absolute most, I may have agreed to dividing it up among the players that were there only.

In your situation, I would've kept the money. I am good friends with all the members on my league team and if I won the $1000, I'd buy them a few beers.

So, you had to give $ to people who could not be bothered to show up, which resulted in a forfiret? I woulda told her the team sucked and kept the k!

On a slightly less dickish note- I might have said that she could have people contact me for the matter.

Did you get a 1099?

I would have kept the money and quit the team. Doesn't appear to be much of a team to begin with.

Don't understand how players can be on a team if they never showed up and you don't know them.. Players have to play a minimum amount of matches to qualify for any playoffs.

No 1099. But I did talk to my tax accountant about it and he checked into it. He put it under Misc Income but only the 125.

I wouldn't have... though I wouldn't mind buying a round of drinks for the team members that did show

You won that money not the team. I'm assuming everyone there had the same chance of getting their name pulled as you did.....a round of drinks would've been enough. I would've told the captain to go pound sand.

I'd feel a bit sick too, but right or wrong doesn't really matter at this point. Letting it eat at you wouldn't even be worth the full amount.

heh... this talk of 1099 did remind me of a situation that happened around 15 years ago.

There was a neighbor of mine that wanted to buy a computer for his business. I told him that I could build him a computer for a lot cheaper than he would have to pay retail. He asked for me to see what I could do. I think at the time what he wanted was 1200 and I could build it for him around 800. He asked that I add a little for myself so I charged him 850 and did the work. Around that time 50 bucks for labor to build a PC was about 1/4 what places were charging to do one. I built it and loaded his software etc and he was very happy to save as much as he did and thanked me. Well Feb rolled around the next year and I got a 1099 for 850 bucks. :shocked2: I went to his house and asked that he change it and he refused. So I estimate that computer cost me around 250 bucks minus the 50 that he paid me.

I never talked to him again.

HELL to the NO!

If it really was a team event, I would think they would give the money to the captain in the first place. But if it WAS really a team event, only those who actually participated in the break the 9 competition would have gotten any money and they would have gotten it directly from me. If it wasn't a legitimate "team" event, they would have gotten a round of beers or a meal at a reasonably priced restaurant ... maybe ... if they were nice about it.

No sense stewing over it now though. Take it as a lesson learned though and don't let yourself get taken advantage of the next time something similar happens in your life. People might ***** and moan and put pressure on you but they will probably respect you more in the end.

If this was a raffle and you were lucky enough to win the money then it belonged to you my friend. That had nothing to do with the tournament.
If any one of my team mates had the nerve to suggest that I needed to split it I would laugh in their face. If they were actually serious about it I would have some words. Man, that's very generous of you to do but in no way was that your obligation! Not me, no way!

As far as players showing up for those events we make it pretty plain. Doesn't make a difference if you're on the roster...if you aren't participating in the event you don't get a piece of the pie, very simple. You have to earn it and that means showing up for the matches.

Dude! That's bullshit! I wouldn't have volunteered the money but if it seemed to be expected I would give it up to the regular players. But I sure as hell wouldn't give it to "teammates" who never showed up.

However, it's been 5 years now. You gotta let it go.

If everything happened as you say, it's pretty shitty of the captain to even think or ask you to divy up the money. You're name was drawn. It's not as if the team name was drawn and your captain designated you to try and win. If that was the case I could see her side.

If someone on my team won, I wouldn't want part. I would just be happy for them and a little jealous that it wasn't my name pulled :)

The only way I would have shared the money is..1. Everyone would have to agree to do the same.
2.any body not presant wouldn't receive anything.
I've always tried to be fare with those on teams I've cpt.,that being said,I'll just say if it had been me,an it was after the fact an my captain called me..sorry no deal..that an you didn't know a few of the folks. .hmmm.
Let it go..no scense in letting it eat at you.
Nice job on potting the nine tho..me,I would have jump the cb off the table, while trying to crush the rack..
Hang in there, maybe you'll get another shot for the cash.

i see

But it wasn't to win money for the team? You just happened to be the lucky player chosen from your team and the only one that did it?

Still, that money was yours. The part that tells me that is that your captain didn't take it up with you then and obvioulsy wasn't understood at the beginning that it was to be split with your team. You guys didn't get into any real money from the tourney so your captain just devised a way to get money anyway....yours!

I would have bought my teammates a couple of drinks, maybe some bar food for dinner or something...

It does make one wonder why the team captain didn't say anything about 'sharing' the money when you won, but phoned you later from the bar instead. Sounds like she didn't have the stones to ask you in front of anyone to cut it up...

I think this puts a little spin to it. at first i was "hell no", but this statment makes it sound like you should have split it with the players that were there...

I dig what you're sayin', but I also think it might depend on the selection process.

Straight up name raffle, as in all the names from your team are in a hat, your name gets pulled ? I'd say luck o' the draw, keep the cash.

If the team has to collectively agree to put up one guy to break, then yeah, split it up. My only caveat would be that it gets split between the cats that were there.

Even aside from all that, it still raises the question as to why the captain waited until a phone call to tell Johnny V that he had to split it...
