It is a nervous habit he has. While in a match, it is part of his way to settle down and get ready for a shot. He doesn't do it all the time, just a certain shots. I was watching an old Accu-stat the other day from the 90's. He's been doing it since then!

You can't be serious that you think Johnny wouldn't win 25% of his matches without picking lint and head games. Get real. He is a multi-time champion, was player of the decade in the 90's and has been tearing this game up for over 20 years. But yeah he wins from picking lint LOL. If you don't like it don't watch it. The whole lint picking scandal is a joke. I have played Johnny in multiple events, and you guys blow it way out of proportion. Plus, not only is Johnny EASILY the best American rotation player, he is also probably the nicest guy out there. I always wanted to hate him, cause he plays so good, but the truth is, he's just a good guy that plays unbelievable.
You are right, he is consistantly good and has been for a LONG time. I know I am a bit biast on this but it is true, Who else over the last 16 years lets say has been consistantly that good? Even if he does not take down a tourney all year where does he place?? 2nd? 3rd? 4th? Not in every event but in the majority or events he is always around.muttley76 said:

It could be worse,he could be picking lint up off the carpeted floors,arguing with spectators,and other things that take his focus away from the table.
I agree with it to a certain extent. I've thought for a long time that the faster he plays,such as the early 90's when he was dominant,the better he plays.
When he's taking the time to inspect the table surface,he seems unsure of himself,and although he's still a world-beater,it's not the same as the player that won 4 World titles in 10 years.
The thing that always puzzled me is can there really be that much wrong with the playing surface of the tables he gets to play on constantly? Simonis or Championship cloth less than a week old,new Diamonds or GC's,new balls,etc,it's not like he's playing in an old-timer's room with horseblanket cloth that comes new with obnoxious fuzzballs,crumbly chalk,and so on.
I've played in just enough large events myself to know that the tables you typically see at the U.S. Open and places like that are never that bad.
If he's lightened up on that stuff,good for him. Tommy D.

Another strange thing Johnny does is that he like to clear balls out of a pocket he's not even shooting at. I've noticed him doing this a lot. For example, in 9-ball, he'll be shooting the 8 and 9 in the corner pockets nearest the foot spot. Before he shoots, he clear the balls from a corner pocket on the opposite end of the table and put them in the other corner pocket on the opposite end of the table. I find this even stranger than the lint picking.
It is all how he goes about getting his total focus on the table,has nothing to do with lint.
wen he was picking lint that wasnt there a couple years ago he wasnt playing as good, infact he was slipping, he still starts too a little when he is real tired from playing through the losers side for example,
