Just wandering how long of a break you have taken from pool because you were tired of playing or burned out?

I am feeling this way and I am going to try and take a little break, maybe play a few times a month instead of 3-5 times a week.

What kind of break has worked for others? Any others get this kind of feeling?

Been playing for 17 years and the longest break for me was about 6 weeks during summer of 2003. After the break I changed my practising habits and concentrated on being relaxed at the table and soon after that I played the best pool of my life for a year or two.

Long Break

I quit for 11 years. I had throat cancer and had to stay out of smoky places so I just quit going to the pool halls. Started back about 10 years ago and now with the smoke eaters sometimes it is ok , but when it starts to bother me I leave. It doesn't take much to bother me either.---Smitty

Ive played for roughly 28 years. In that time, the longest Ive went without playing at all would be in the 1 year range a few times. And Im 1 year back into playing seriously and trying to recover from a 10 year layoff from dedicated playing. 10 years with nothing but bar boxes and bangers cause your game to go down the drain pretty fast. But little by little Im getting back to where I was in 1997.

It was 1970. Jay Helfert was still called Toupee Jay then. I was in the middle of Danny Diliberto, Marvin Henderson, Ronnie Allen, Cecil Tugwell, Hawaiian Brian, Hippy Jimmy Reid, Cole Dickson, Jerry the Greek, Crippled Shorty, Cuban Joe, and all these wonderful characters. I was in the pool hall day and night. Then I realized that I had to change my life and work on my career. After lot of good gamblers told me to get out and that this life was not for me. I left for 25 years and learned my trade very well. Having worked all over the world and major companies. It was not until 1995 when a guy by the name of Efren drew me back and I realized my love for the game. So I took a break for 25 years at least. Sometimes I regret that break.

I've quit many times.. 6 months straight one time.. This last time was about 7 months which I just started playing again in Feb of this year..

For the last month I just have no desire to play but force myself to go play twice a week.. Not really sure why I force myself to go but I do. Which I end up ready to go after about 20 minutes of playing.

Anyone got any ideas how to get the love back?

I am currently on a break, I've not played seriously in about 6 to 8 weeks now, and will continue not to until I get back from holiday in beginning of July. My game was getting so bad that it just wasn't fun anymore, so I decided to take a break. When I start again, I'm going to practice snooker for a tournament in Germany in August, then back to pool!

I quit for 9 years. Never hit a ball and was afraid to hit one. But, it was always on my mind. I don't think one day went by that I didn't think about it.

After my divorce I started playing again and it was a hard comeback and I never fully recovered and got back to where I was.

Now I don't enjoy playing like I did, don't enjoy watching it one bit, and I guess I can live with that. I didn't think it would last forever.

1978 to 1981. Richie's big tournament at the Tropicana and Cecil "The Serpent" Tugwell brought me back. I'll never forget the first day back, when we went to the old pool hall downstairs in Glendale. I couldn't make a ball, and felt so helpless. I played every day for a week and it all started coming back.

Nowadays I frequently quit for a few months at a time. I know I can find my stroke in a few days when I return.

I was on a break from playing for about 6 weeks, but actually had the itch to play last nite! I grabbed my cue and went out but couldnt find anyone I enjoy playing with at any rooms and I was not in a mood to play any bangers, so the cue stayed in the car! I may go out tonite and play if I get the itch.

From 1972 to 1981.

I quit the day I got married because I knew how much I loved the game and I wanted to devote my time to my family and career.

I started playing again after I blew my knees out playing raquetball.

In 1987, After 3 years on the road, my wife laid down the law. Either give up pool or her.

I sure miss that b#tch!

I went to Germany in 1985 and came back in 2002!

From 85 to 2000....I probably played 30 racks.

I started playing again on Saturday nights with some friends in Wiesbaden (A suburb of Frankfurt).

Now I play BCAPL league twice a week and I shoot the occasional tourney on weekends

I stopped for 3 yrs to get a job .And now i play 3 days out the week 2 hrs .and weekend tournments keeps my stroke good and my mind right .I feel i do better when i play less.

I'm now going on 3 years since I last played. I've taken mini hiatus periods (about 1 month long) before but this time, I'm not getting that itch. I didn't get burned out or bored with the game, instead, I started to get turned off by the people in it. I can't even stand to be in a pool room for more than 2 hours and I can't believe I used to spend the whole week at the US Open in VA or days at a time at the SBE. It's just not my scene anymore. I opened up my case about 2 months ago and I couldn't figure out which shaft went with which butt! LOL There was a time when if I was seen without my poolcues, it was a surprise. Now if I'm seen with them, it's a shocker! I get my subscriptions and I just chuck 'em before I even read them. AZB is the only site I check now (I'm originally a family member of the CCB) and even in reading things on here, it just adds to that turn off that I've been feeling for 3 years now.

I love the game but it's just not my scene anymore.

well, I played what I "thought" was pretty good pool while I was in college... only because I could beat everyone I knew and hung out with. After that I only played occasionally and socially. It wasn't untill I moved in 97 to a town that had REAL pool players that I realized just how much I didn't know. I started playing 4 and 5 times a week AND IT WAS FREAKING AWESOME! Then I got married.... She knew I played pool but didn't understand that I would become emotionally "not right" after not hitting balls for a days. Since then, the longest I've gone without playing is about 3 weeks after my daughter was born.

i started playing at age 13 (1948) and played until my mid 30`s life changed and i never payed again untill 2006 when i made friends with a fellow in fl. ( i`m now in wil,nc) and play abot 12 hrs. a week (straight pool ) i don`t run in the 30`s anymore ,but stiil play a decent game ( knowing the fundimentals helped) after a 36 yr. layoff..

Yeah, I'm just getting back after about a two month break from the serious side of pool and I think you just have to trust yourself to know when you're ready.

So far I've noticed a substantial improvement on focus however my stamina isn't quite there yet.
