What's the news on SVB instructional?

The Aiming portion of the series is now available at https://vimeo.com/ondemand/svb

The Action Report Shane Van Boening Instructional Series is brought to you by Simonis Cloth, Aramith, Bad Boys Billiard Productions and CueSports International. WPBA Pro Jennifer Barretta hosts the video and helps the viewer get into the details of how Shane does what he does.

Price is $14.99. The video is 33 minutes in length and covers aiming Shane's way. You can download the entire video file to keep by clicking the "download now" button. The video is in 720p HD.

Andrew Cleary shot and edited the video so the production quality is high with some great 3D illustrations of instructional points.

Looking forward to watching.. the download option is GREAT.. and Cleary's work is always A+.... now if 33 minutes could just make me shoot like SVB :smile2:

Just did my first purchase of TAR production, good work, worth the $ imo. How many parts does it comes in?

Two Questions

One, if you do a DVD how long til thats released?

Two, how long until the other parts are released? The one on breaking specifically:grin:

Each day of a match is about 4-5 hours. If I cant get $1 an hour for the best players in the world then I just wont even try to sell it. Actually I am starting to kind of get the feeling that despite all the improvements and big matches we have pretty much reached all that this market will bear.

There really just isnt any market for what we sell. I expect the VOD to confirm this. At that point I'll know exactly where we are at. Then its just a matter of paying players less or going another direction.

Either way we'll find out in a month or so.

Its your business obviously, but I just can't see how you can determine if its worth abandoning the VOD model in one month's time, if I'm interpreting you correctly.

There is already precedence in Accu-Stats. I know they are not rich, but they survive paying a full crew and being able to buy the latest equipment. They do this by selling a large back catalog of matches, in addition to their live stream events. You are sitting on the same thing.

Obviously, you don't have as large a collection as they do, but the idea is there. I think you have to give it minimum a solid year of having your full catalog available on the VOD model, to see if it gains momentum.

Just my two cents:)

Didn't Shane already go over his aiming method on the podcasts. There are a few videos on youtube even Vimeo of him explaining it. So whats new on this instructional dvd of the aiming part, except the HD format and 3D angles? Probably still buy it and be like hmmmmm yeah something i already seen him do.

Think he went over it very briefly on a podcast. My guess is he is going to go into detail about his process.

I think you are wrong, as in Major Wrong, or General Wrong

"Actually I am starting to kind of get the feeling that despite all the improvements and big matches we have pretty much reached all that this market will bear."

Dear TAR,
With your library of great pool matches, get ready for big sales. Big. You haven't begun to reach the market. Thanks in advance for everything, MJ

Hmmmm just viewed it and i was right. But i still support TAR and anything that has to do with SVB cause he is our hometown Hero.. Def will be buying the Breaking Segment.

I paid for the Aiming Instructional Vimeo by TAR and it was really good. The quality is great.

I will need to watch it several times to understand how Shane aims with applied English, so I downloaded it.

Thanks much Justin!!!! Good product!

I think it's always going to be very niche, and any options there are for changes generally come up against the same stumbling block, in my mind at least. Like it would be nice to have more than one match going on per PPV, so you'd have like an undercard match on the first day, with two well known but lesser ranked players, and then two big guns duelling it out over the second two days, but as soon as you start adding more players into the mix I'm guessing the costs skyrocket. Sure you can reduce the prize money, but you still end up covering four flights instead of two.

It's tough, and I hope TAR makes it, as I think it's a great product which is run very well.

then downloading is the only choice for my old laptop, it glitches and stalls with HD live over the Net.
For those who downloaded already, what's the file size? Yes, I'm running short of free disk space too :embarrassed2:

Two, how long until the other parts are released?
I second that question. Justin?

found an answer to my question about file size as soon as I registered at Vimeo to purchase, it's a bit over 1 Gb.

Good Morning Vahmurka,
I hope things are going well for you and your family! For your laptop it sounds like you need an external hard drive. Or a DVD burner or even a large flash drive, to store your good downloads. Hang in there. Take care.
Many Regards,
Lock N Load.

Awesome JCIN. I can't honestly think of how you could do this any better. It's easy to buy and watch, easy to download and keep for the future, and the price is perfectly reasonable, maybe even a little on the low side.

If you can't succeed with convenient + high quality + cheap + professionally edited...
then there's nowhere else to really go.

Re: making the TAR match files available for download... obviously piracy is a concern but I think you're better off just doing it. Some people are allergic to watching on the PC (not sure why) and will not sit through an older race to 100 in their office chair. Make it convenient for them to burn to a DVD or however they get it on the TV. It's easy to save a streamed video whether there's a download link or not, so you can't really stop it. The video game and movie industry have found that making their product less convenient doesn't work and may even backfire and result in worse sales.

I streamed it on my iPad. Worked fine but I have good service.

Production - Outstanding. Graphics added were well thought out and executed superbly.

Video Quality - again, outstanding.

Content - just okay

Price - c'mon, it was $15. If you're serious about pool, how can you not spend this?

To SVB's credit, he didn't fill it with a bunch of BS fluff. It was "here's how I learned it, here's examples of my method and you will need to practice this a lot for it to work for you." Refreshing. I thought he could have spent some more time covering thicker cuts. I won't say more because I don't feel that is right.

While I think the content could have been better and slightly more robust, it was more than worth the money. I will purchase the subsequent videos for sure.

I would HAVE to agree with this ... how many posts do we see or times do you hear in the pool room, about people trying to find a certain TAR match they heard about but didn't see. Hell, I'm perfectly expecting to buy every TAR match prior to 2010, since I didn't know about TAR until around then. Hoping they're going to add all the old matches for that exact reason. :)

Justin, I just bought and watched the video on my MacBook Air. Here's my unsolicited feedback:

1. Video and production quality were top-notch - kudos!

2. The copy editing needed another set of eyes and spell-checking, as it detracted from the otherwise professional content. For examples, "Staring Shane Van Boening," "Co-Staring Jennifer Barretta," "Approch the shot." (I'm sure you could find a pool enthusiast to proof-read for you prior to shipping in exchange for a free copy – pick me, pick me!)

3. Content on this one was relatively thin, and tough but necessary questions weren't asked. For example: "What happens when the distance between CB and OB changes?" Obviously, you can't keep aiming inside ferrule edge to outside OB edge for a thin cut when the CB is very close to the OB, so what is Shane's adjustment technique? My litmus test of deep content is "will I watch it again (and again)?" and on this one, unfortunately, I won't – it's easy to learn what Shane's doing with one viewing, and the rest is left to personal practice and experience.

4. The price was about right, although I think $10 would make it more of a no-brainer for 30-min lightweight content like this. In general, I think this is the best business model for pool instructional videos, certainly *much* better than $40 for a DVD that I have to wait on. $10-15 makes it an impulse purchase, and the increased sales volume should make up for the lower unit price and nominal losses from password sharing / screen grab copying among friends.

Hope that helps, and keep up the great work!

Well in the past my experience has been that for many different projects lots of people say they will buy things. Historically that does not turn out to be true. I'm not complaining it is just what my experience has been so I have to be very careful on how much time and money I spend on things based off of a realistic expectation of return.

Accu-Stats model has changed several times over the years and continues to evolve. I think they are in the same boat as we are in that the product they sell has an extremely small audience with a limited capacity for product and a limited budget to spend on it. Until Tunica came along Pat did two events a year. If the Open doesnt happen this year he's back to that. So he started creating his own events. The Make it Happen model is ingenious but I can't see doing one every month. The market just can't support it.

The other difference between Accu-Stats and TAR is most of their product units are one to two hour matches. Our product units are four to eight hours in length. This creates many issues for us with regards to storage, bandwidth, encoding and pricing.

I'm going to try the VOD thing for awhile. If it dies on the vine then there are other options. If it will carry its own weight then more resources and time will be invested to expand and improve it. It really is not as easy as just saying "Okey dokey I want a subscription based web sight to host hundreds of gigabytes of content and charge $9.95 a month for it." I wish it was that easy.

I know the system Pat uses and I have tested and played it with it. The numbers dont add up for our needs.
