Whats the Point of having a waiting list???

Oh well.. Each man follows his own rules.
What this really means for me is rather than put my name on the list, sit wait have something to drink or eat I might as well leave.
Makes no sense waiting for a table I might not get

no it doesn't........if places to play in your locale are too full.....then it sounds like someone needs to open up a new place :)

Thats a p i s s off. I'd wait to get a table, take out my jump cue and practice jumping balls for an hour.
But seriously, I sympathize. I'd be madder than a wet hen too.

Nepotism LIVES

def
Nepotism is favoritism granted to relatives or friends, regardless of merit. The word nepotism is from the Latin word nepos .

Been around since the beginning of time

Bribes.... Hmmm

I grew up playng in the Golden Q in NY from '79 until it's closing about 10yrs ago. In the early eightys, during the pool heyday, the "waiting list" time would be about 3-4 hrs just about every night. It was amazing just how busy that one room was back then.

Anyhow, many a $10 and $20 bill was passed to the "treacherous" housemen for a table back then, yet the "regulars", of one I certainly was, jumped right to the head of the list, gratis, whenever a table was requested by one of us.

This "system", is by no means, right or ethical. It's the way of the world in some, thank goodness not all, places.

Still miss the old GQ. Pool heaven for a kid!

When we did have a pool hall, with about 10 tables, the better tables (5) up near the front were pretty much used for the BCA League/regular players almost exclusively. There was one table was reserved for the money games, as it was the truest table in the place. While I didn't gamble, I did get to play on that one from time to time when it wasn't being used.

The back tables (5) were pretty much for the local banger kids that would filter in and out from time to time. It worked out pretty well if there was something going on.

However, even our local taverns will reserve a table for public use while a tourney or certain leagues are going on...keeps the cash flowing in while the others are in use.

I do miss the pool hall tho'.

Well, to be honest, if there was a big tournament this weekend (The Ocean State), I personally think the players in the tournament should get first priority. However, I *also* think this should be made clear to everyone. So you go in, show your ID, they check the list of registered players for the tourney. I see no issue with that, as long as they say up front what they are doing. If you are out for a casual night out, that's great and please make it a night of pool! However, remember that there are many people with a lot more invested in pool in terms of time, interest, and livelihood. Maybe they have never played on those tables and need to warm up for the tourney.

But like I said, POST the policy, and stick to it. I'd make it that if there are no registered tournament players on the list, you get the next table and are guaranteed an hour. If no other tourney players sign up you stay as long as you want. If a tourney player signs up, the first non-tourney players that went out and have been there for more than 1 hr get politely asked to move aside (and maybe the tourney player buys them a round of drinks :-)

Anyway, I'm off to go watch that tourney!!

KMRUNOUT

What you have "invested" in pool carries no weight. The average joe who wants to go out for a night of pool could care less about our obsession. Their money is just as green as yours.

If an event is going on it is the responsibility of the management to manage the tables for the event. If they are going to start practice at a certain time and there are tables reserved for practice and the tourney, then the person renting that table should be informed that their time is limited.

If it's a room that has tables to rent as well as tables for the tournement then you should get in line with everyone else to rent a table regardless of your tourney status. The idea that you have a right to it or deserve it for your long dedication to the sport is misguided.

If there is a list then the list should eb followed. Once the table is in possession and rented, if theose who are renting the table wish to pass it to a friend, there isn't much you can do about it. The light never goes off. The rental clock never stops running. A room owner must be vigilant if they are charging per person per hour or they're likely to be taken advantage of.

Bottom line. If there's a list is should apply to all. For any special event, it is the rooms responsibility to accomodate the participants, not the other patrons of the business.

I'm surprised anyone didn't mention this. Look for a table with some friendly people playing on it and challenge em to a game for beers. Game on!

The way we did a waiting list at the hall I used to work at was we started taking reservations at 11 am. If you came in asking for a table without having a reservation you were betting on luck.

If you had a reservation for 8pm they would be lucky to play by 10.....w were that busy

when i finally gained status at the local hall, there was no list to contend with..and they just stopped charging me for table time. go figure.

locals rule.

After going home mad last week we went back last night.
When we went to pay at the end the Girl at the counter said we were all set no charge.

Thanks to management for making it right!
