How long can a ball hang in the hole, before dropping, for it to be a legally pocketed ball??

Great Question

I was playing here in Dallas and a huge storm came up. At one point I left the 6 ball hanging in the corner pocket that was toward the door. My opponent was chatting on the phone not paying attention. Suddenly, just as the door opened a tornado went by and sucked all the air out of the room, just like tornado's do. The 6 dropped. Unfortunately the cue, 7, 8 and 9 also rolled to that rail and left a crappy shot. My opponent and I argued for about 15 mins about who's shot it was. Neither of us wanted to shoot.

We reracked and gave the tornado the win.

My understanding has always been until the trigger is pulled on the next shot. Could get interesting if the shooter changes because the shot hasn't dropped yet (want to shoot fast and NOT bump the table).

The 5 second rule is what I have always played. If after 5 seconds the ball is replaced as close as possible to where it was and it is still the incoming shooter's turn.

I have heard once the player leaves the table, its over. If the ball falls while the new shooter is coming to the table, ball gets spotted back.
That's why when my opponents hangs a ball, I get my azz up right away!!

My understanding is that when the shooter leaves the table, his turn is completed or when the opponent comes to the table his turn is beginning. If either of these happen, the ball is replaced as close as possible to where it was previously to falling.

I'm not sure if that is the official rule book version, but this is the way we've played in league and some tourneys. Hope this helps.

When the opponent leaves the table? What kind of squishy rule are you falling for?

Ya think that's why the Pinoys always stand close to the table in pics?

By the way Tigerseye, aren't you originally from Raleigh or Chapel Hill or something? You look like someone I use to see there (with Lance).

Heres the WPA ruling on it. Sounds like a bunch of people need to refresh themselves on the rule books.

8.3 Ball Pocketed
A ball is pocketed if it comes to rest in a pocket below the playing surface or enters the ball return system. A ball near the brink of a pocket partly supported by another ball is considered pocketed if removal of the supporting ball would cause the ball to fall into the pocket.
If a ball stops near the edge of a pocket, and remains apparently motionless for five seconds, it is not considered pocketed if it later falls into the pocket by itself. See 1.7 Balls Settling for other details. During that five second period, the referee should ensure that no other shot is taken. An object ball that rebounds from a pocket back onto the playing surface is not a pocketed ball. If the cue ball contacts an already pocketed ball, the cue ball will be considered pocketed whether it rebounds from the pocket or not. The referee will remove pocketed object balls from full or nearly full pockets, but it is the shooter’s responsibility to see that this duty is performed.
So 5 seconds.

That sounds great IF there is a referee with a watch standing there. Even in early rounds of tournaments that's not likely to be the case. Anyways whatever rules (WPA,BCA,local) there's gonna be an argument.:D

It's 5 seconds. As for timing it with a stopwatch just use common sense. If it sits there for a few seconds without dropping then be a man and walk away. Only a true whiner/loser would argue over a hanging ball that drops in an untimely manner. People like that really get under my skin. Another reason that I hate the game that I love so much.

It really depends....

If I was shooting, and I wanted to make the ball and had good position, then you need to wait as long as I want.

If I was shooting, and I missed my position, then it's immediately your turn, whether it falls or not...

If you were shooting, but I can easily make the duck, then it's immediately my shot....

If you were shooting, but I can't make the duck, and you didn't get position on the next ball, then we need to wait a while until I am ready to shoot to see if it falls....

Oh were it this simple in tournaments...

Matching up... I like the way you think...
