Whats with all the clapping?

I was at home today watching some of the more recent WPBA matches that I had DVRed and it finally got to me. What is with all the clapping? Clapping after every shot no matter what! Miss a shot?:clapping: Scratch on the break?:clapping: Failed safety?:clapping: The older matches didn't have this constant clapping. And then Mitch says "We have a very appreciative and knowledgeable crowd here today..." Appreciative, thats obvious; but knowledgeable, thats up for debate. I finally had to turn it off.

excellent, another clapping thread

brian

oh yeah first!

The name of the game is "Steve in the tux is telling everyone to clap".

Oh, 2nd.

well to be fair steve doesnt actually tell you to clap for every shot, but to show excitement. as a fan there are a limited number of ways to show this. i've always thought the wave would be a good idea...

They are fans, therefore they clap. In MLB people clap if the opposing pitcher walks a batter. It is one of the most boring things in sports, the walk, but people clap.

Ya, I watched that last weekend or the weekend before and noticed the exact same thing. Drove me crazy and I finally turned it off also.

You'll want to steer clear of competitive sports:

No doubt, when you watch football, it makes you crazy when the crowd cheers after the extra point, a 98% proposition, is made.

No doubt, when you watch basketball, it makes you crazy when the fans cheer after a made foul shot, an 80% proposition, and, for some players, a 90% proposition.

When you watch golf, the applause after a two foot putt, a better than 97% prorposition, is holed can be loud, which must drive you nuts.

When watching major league baseball, you must go insane when a batter drawing an intentional walk is cheered, for he hasn't accomplished anything at all.

Sports fans cheer when they feel like it, and not based on an intricate understanding of what in-competition feats merit applause. Deal with it.

Do the same people cheer after the extra point is missed?

Do the same people cheer after the free throw is missed?

I do not mind the clapping after a nicely made shot or a tough three rail postion play is excuted perfectly. What I said that I couldn't understand is why even after a poor shot they get the same reaction. It would be just as easy for the crowd to say "AHHHHH" or OHHHHH". And I do not have to "deal with it" thus the reason why I turned it off.

Cheering and clapping were encouraged at the WPBA events, taped for ESPN, that I attended in NC. I don't know how the players could play with what seemed like every little move being orchestrated by ESPN for taping. And the crowd watching the screen to see if they cheered wildly enough to catch ther eye of the camerman. I don't really care to attend WPBA events on Sunday because of ESPN and what they do to the venue.

Here's the BEST part Majic. The WPBA tapes and produces the shows themselves to show on ESPN.

i'm not really sure why the wpba is continually getting bashed about this. wpba events are fun to attend in person. there is not much pool shown on tv so we're going busy ourselves *****ing about what does make onto tv. what pool really needs are better fans.

And ESPN is doing a SH*T job of doing it as well.

Questions: Was it really the clapping that annoyed you or the fact that your lights kept going on and off and your garage door kept opening and closing -- just askin'?!

Bob <No debate needed -- the claps = the answer!>
Throw these away as they'll just drive you nutzo:

In no way was this thread meant to bash the WPBA. I'm a supporter of anything that is trying to promote pool in a positive light and I watch the live stream of the WPBA whenever possible. My point was that the older tapings did not promote this forced excitement and I thought that ESPN had brought on the clapping to make it more enjoyable to watch. I was simply stating my opinion that I did not find it anymore exciting and quite annoying. I have a hard time believing that the ladies enjoy a round of applause after they blew a safety to lead to an easy run-out.

its not about what the players want. its about what the production team thinks will help attract viewers. they dont care if we find it annoying. they are trying to lure in the channel surfer, not the die hard pool fan. it youre channel surfing and you hear clapping you may stop to watch. its about trying to grow the fan base. does it work? dont know for sure, but if it didnt then they would prolly stop doing it. its not just the wpba either. its any pool event produced for espn. if it helps the sport then we should prolly just put up with it.
