What's your break speed?

I just bought a PREDATOR BK2 shaft that I'm using with my PREDATOR sneaky with SS joint ... sorry PREDATOR fanboys, but the big cat on the BK butt is too loud for my tastes ... and while waiting for it to arrive I downloaded the PREDATOR break speed app onto the iPAD.

I ranged between 20.23 MPH and 23.30 MPH on five racks.

I was surprised how consistent thespeed was, but maybe I should be more consistent?

On the break I made 1, 0, 2, 1, 1. Control of the CB was reasonable, that's always been my break weakness, but I was never left ith out a shot.

Anyone else ever use this program or have their break speed measured?

I have the app on my s3, and I find it VERY useful in practicing the break. Depending on what I'm trying to do, I break from 18.5 to 24 mph.

The range for my competitive 9-ball break is narrower--between 19-20.5 mph. I tend not to make the wing ball at higher speeds, and cue ball control definitely starts to suffer. Gotta keep working on my mechanics!

I think that break speed is going to put you in the 90th percentile here.

I have it on my Samsung phone. I average about 18 - 19 breaking 9 ball from the side with decent control.

Blimey, Larr, you actually play pool?

Really, wow?

I lift weights and the break has always been my best shot.

That's true, nd to be honest I was hitting it a bit harder than I usually do just to see what a new toy does. I do think the lower deflection is why my CB control wasn't noticeably worse than my old breaker even though I was muscling it more.

I was at an exhibition last night and Nick Varner was asked how to break a 10 ball rack and one of the things he said was that he hits the balls at 70 % of his power hitting the cue ball just a little above center. His thought was that cue ball control was more important then speed.
To answer the question the last time I clocked my break with a cell phone app I was in the 19 mph give or take a little.

Ahh! Now here's something for you! I had an opportunity to closely observe breaks of the best in the world at the CSI U.S. Open events this summer, and it was amazing to see, up close and personal, just how little the pros muscle the break shot, even when rifling it at 30+ mph like Bustamante! Since coming back home I've been working on my grip, follow through and weight transfer, and I'm getting better speed and control with far less effort. Give it a try!

LOL, lifting weight has nothing to do with your break speed. It's all about your timing and how square you hit whitey. I can bench press my body weight 20 times, but my timing sucks on the break, therefore my average is 19-21.

20-21 mph using the breakrak. Thats with control though, if I was just just trying to murder the rack who knows.

I can't run a rack so I don't bother practicing my break... so take the following with a grain of salt:)

I have the break speed app and after the novelty of using it for a few days wore off, I never used it again in the last 2 or 3 years its been out.

Maybe a good way to use it is to see how consistent you can be. For example, how often you can repeat a 15mph break, an 18mph break, a 21mph break, etc. So if you come across conditions that are conducive to a specific break speed, you can repeat that particular speed on demand and with consistency. The break speed app could be a good tool to monitor this idea.

My average break speed is around 19mph, but I've noticed better results on my nine ball break at around 16mph. My ten ball break works best at around 18mph. I'll only hit them hard if balls aren't finding pockets regardless of where I'm breaking from. When I do that my break is between 22-24 mph, but I have zero control of the cb

The question was " what's your break speed?" Mine is about a half or quarter mile per hr. I would guess. Whatever it is that takes each corner ball in the last row to touch a rail and come back toward the stack while the CB goes 4 rails to the head rail.

You guys are hitting the ball way too hard. Oh ... are you talking about that carnival game 9 ball? It wasn't mentioned in the question. Oh .... yeah, I heard of that game, I think. :scratchhead:

I tried the predator break app maybe 5 times yesterday. I play mostly 8b on a 9ft.

Was consistently 17.5-18.5. One was 20mph. I break with my playing cue with a OB classic LD shaft and a medium everest tip.

I imagine that could hinder my break speed?

I would like a couple more mph on my 8b break.

To borrow a phrase from the great golf instructor Harvey Penick, "the woods are full of long hitters".

Quality of contact trumps speed the same as it does in a golf swing.

This is probably a dumb question but does break speed necessarily mean the object balls will travel further. I don't think I break nearly as hard as some guys but don't really think the balls fly around the table further for them.
