When did Walmart start selling Schons???

a true story

a few years ago at the glass city open in november i bought 15k worth of schons from omega mike from texas at 50% off across the board my thoughts were to sell at the derby in january i had three poeple there at the derby tell me they could buy these from friends locally for 50% off but the best one that i still laugh about was the guy telling me his barbrer was a schon dealer years ago schons were like gold there was only a handful of dealers schon shot themselfs in the foot when they let anyone with cash be a dealer no store front required anyone with cash can buy i have also been told but not sure if its true that some get discounts of up to 70% off in my opion this has only hurt the value of the schon brand

[...reads this intently, reads, reads, reads, thinks to himself "gosh, this is a really long sentence," reads, reads, reads, wondering when the sentence will end, reads, reads, reads, notices shortness of breath, reads, reads, reads, gasps for air, huffing, gasping... <whump!> :thud: ]

I really hate that they went to this,,I will never look at schon again,I mean what will the fun be to go to your local room to show off your new schon and someone blurts out where did you get it from "wal-mart",,I have always placed schon at a higher level than any other production cue,but not any more,,just my .02,,,WM

No doubt!

Now bring that schon sneaky to me and I will take that chance. lol

Just a guess

I think all these people are lookin for cues, but they dont know they are online only. http://www.peopleofwalmart.com/

But I have a few companies I do business with, that do drop shipping. I can sell all kinds of products, and they ship from their warehouse, with my company contact info. Most of them have no charges for this service. My guess is, this is the same deal. You place the order with Walmart, and it goes thru the web to the Distributor, or the factory, and they ship it out to you.

everybody is trying to figure out how to get pool into the mainstream and get some recognition by the public and then people get upset when walmart finally starts selling a quality pool cue? This could open the door to millions of potential cue customers

Not just cues

If you was to run a search through the wal mart search engine youd be surprise how many different pool cues they sell, the higher end cues are online only I believe..

But tips, cases, and various supplies. And most of which, "not available in stores".

Hell, I have had quite a few Schon's over the years and consider them a fine playing cue. Suddenly, because Wallyworld sells them, that is suppose to change my opinion of them? Don't think so. I wouldn't mind owning another, to tell you the truth.

I don't understand your reasoning. A Schon is a Schon. How does their decision to try a different marketing venue change the product? It doesn't! I suspect you are one who has decided that Wal-Mart is an evil corporation.
Personally, I shop at WM quite often. I can find the same products there that the local supermarket sells. Why should I pay more, just to say I got it at Harris-Teeter? It['s the same product.
That being said, I can't help but wonder just how many regular WM customers will be shopping for a Schon, or a $3100 McDermott for that matter... http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=12354750&findingMethod=rr

It also kinda shoots down the theory that everything WM sells is from China....doesn't it?

devil's advocate

I had the exact same first reaction of fear and dismay reading through these posts and inspecting the website- certain, as one other poster said, that if a major teeny bopper brand made it to Wal Mart, the teeny boppers would stop buying that brand. So therefore Schon would lose appeal and prestige.

But more and more I started remembering stupid, stupid bar room conversations I kept finding myself in during that one regrettable year I played league: where players proudly insisted that CueTec and Meucci were not only the absolute finest in cuemaking accomplishments, those brands were the final deciding factor in whether a ball went in the pocket or not.

Those bar players are the bread and butter of pool, but they don't get out much and their ideas and worlds are very limited. They see a little pool on t.v. (much of which they don't understand), and they talk to each other- that's their only source of info on pool.

So if Schons and Cognoscentis and Justis and JB and every other Mercedes/ Lexus/ Volvo/ Honda of pool started selling at WalMart and Amazon and Target and CostCo- it brings more awareness of what really is out there. And it brings more money to pool. And if more big companies start making more money off of pool, that could mean sponsorships and fat added money tournaments.

So... I'm just saying: if WalMart wanted to pay me my current salary, retirement and benefits, plus travel expenses and entry fees to play every single tourney I could fit into a year while playing with any cue they offered, yeah- I might just be wearing some spiffy new pleated khakis, a blue Walmart shirt with a nametag, and sporting a new Schon. I'll even wear a smile and flip some birds around this office on my way out to the next tourney.

Not sure I understand everyones problem with them selling Schon's as long as the price stays where it should be. So tell me what is the differance of paying a $1000.00 for a Shon from a Billiard supply store and paying $1000.00 for a Shon from Wal-Mart. I don't see the problem.--Smitty

I still love my Schons....and this is not suppose to be a bash wal-mart thread but.... My local wal-mart has 90% part time rate to keep from paying anykind of benifits..which in turn allows them to get welfare and government assistance...I try to give them as little business as possible because it doesnt benifit the employees anyway. I'm not asking anyone to stop shopping at wal mart I'm just saying that one reason I try not to.

Wal-mart Cues

I think this is one of the best threads ever on AZ.
You really can disagree with anything people are saying, and personally I think it's funny and have been trying to joke about.
Wal-mart's online selling is no different than the Ebay drop-shippers only more expensive, and I can't see any AZers paying more unless they have some gift cards gathering dust.
The MAP pricing sets the cost higher than any of us would pay for a Schon, and this really can't hurt the billiards industry.
Schon is what it is, their discounting policies have hurt the secondary market but they are in the business of selling cues.

I wonder what the Walton family AZ Billiards username is....
I'll trade them some scented candles and a vacuum cleaner for an STL-15.

I wonder what all the naysayers would think if Wal-Mart started sponsoring pool tournaments, and adding several thousand dollars to the payouts. Would they stand by their principles and boycott the tournaments, or would they flock to them for a shot at a reasonably good payday?

The flock one.

Okay so I was a little wordier on the same idea.

But I'll go farther:
For a WalMart paid year as described above, PLUS a "banker's bonus" at the end, I will even wear any costume WalMart wants me to: www.peopleofwalmart.com.

I have a idea. Why don't we insist that all Schon's sold thru WM be branded with a "WM" in some fashion. That way, when they go for sale on the secondary market, we can tell if they are a "cheaper cue" and pay accordingly...

I thought I'd chime in to give some insight about this. A few months ago, Walmart signed a deal where they were going to let some major 3rd party ecommerce retailers start selling through Walmart.com. One of those companies is CSN Stores, which among other things, sells a wide variety of pool cues and billiards equipment through their everygameroom.com site. This is a similar deal to what we do with Amazon.

Hope this helps clear up some of the questions about Walmart selling Schon!

you guys are missing the point Wal Mart is just a middle man to open up the door to a wider market. They are still being produced by the same means. I just looked at the site they are selling Mcdermott, Predator, Viper(not saying much) BUt Pool table felt and Equipment. They are just another source.

Have a McDermott Prestige cue up there for $3100 Seriously doubt they would be the manufacturer if for that type of pricelist.

Not for nothing either but the cues themself are the same price as if you went to Seyberts or something.

Until Wal Mart takes over the production I think all is still fine. Although it does loose the lust when you tell someone you just bought your beautiful cue from walmart.

What he said..........

Most of us bought our TVs from Walmart - that doesn't make them "cheaper" quality-wise. A Sony is a Sony.

Most of the people who bought a Schon bought it from a third-party company. Does that mean those are cheap as well???

???
