It was against Steve Mizerak. He was using his playing cue. I've got the match on DVD. PM me for a copy.
This was the first time I saw a jump shot successfully executed in a major tournament.

hemicudas said:Marcus Collier, the greatest Bumper Pool player that ever lived, use to carry a bumper pool cue with him for jumping balls on the pool table back in the early 1970s. This idea stuck in the minds of a few people and one of them decided to put a larger tip on it and sell it as a jump cue.

Earl came to San Diego on the road when he was 16yrs old and matched up with Billy Graves playing with the two foul push out rules. Billy kept pushing the cue ball where Earl couldn't see it. Earl had never seen this before and would tell Billy to go ahead and shoot. Billy would jump, make the ball and then run out. Earl was in such awe of this, afterwards he had Billy teach him to jump.
As far as I know, the first custom dedicated jump cue was made by Pete Tascarella after seeing Pat Fleming carrying around a sawed up house stick specifically for jumping. People used just the shaft prior, if they weren't using there full cue.Newton said:Get tired of hearing "in the old day's we did not use that Hollywood-jump-shit-cue. You should curve around the ball or use the cushions. Jumping should be banned" ......
When did you see someone jumping a ball, in a proper way of course, the first time ? Was fun to see Earl jump in 88' with his break stick, but is there any veterans around here which could "beat" 88' ? Who, When and whit a dedicated jump stick?

Now in the old days, there was no such thing as a jump cue. Players only used their playing cue during the old days.

IMHO the jump shot has been around for quite a while. Whether high profile players were employing the technique in major tournaments is another matter.
Just my .02: I'm one of those who thinks the jump cue should be banned. Maybe it's just the way I was brought up to see the game. Special "jump cues" just seem like cheating to me.
yep, but strangely enough, in a couple of the tournament pictures, i saw players with jump cues...1pocket said:A new rule announced at the Derby this year was NO JUMP CUES -- YOU MUST JUMP WITH YOUR PLAYING CUE ONLY
This was effective in 9-Ball, too, not just One Pocket & Banks
Maybe they were in action (which they could use jump cues).silvr rcr said:yep, but strangely enough, in a couple of the tournament pictures, i saw players with jump cues...
