When is a pool pocket too tight?

I think he was being satirical.
He was pointing out the trend toward smaller pockets.

I believe that all Pockets should be a True 5" with Corrected Angles.

Ever run/owned a poolroom? Kinda doubt it because if you did you'd know that tight pockets are BAD for your wallet. Yeah they're fine for the higher speed players but for recreational play they SUCK. When people go out to play pool they want to see balls go in, not just rattle. Having one or two tight pocket tables is one thing but the majority should be bigger. BTW, 4.5" aren't buckets. That's the standard tournament-size of almost every major tournament/event.

I feel that we should be making pockets smaller.
We need to make it harder to play Pool, not easier!
This will bring in more new players.
People will watch more Tournaments because they know the pockets are harder to play.

4-12" is a Bucket IMHO.

This post will take into account that most games today are either 9 or 10 ball. While the video shows chineese 8 ball, that is not my main issue.

This shows the Chineese 8 ball pocket:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=swAeREom0_k

I'm going to compare now to rifle shooting. Let's say that a given rifle barrel has a spread of about 2.5 inches and you make the target 1.5 inches. No points, only hit or miss is recorded. Lets say you shoot only 3 shots. Now you must be phenomenally skilled to hit the target 3 times, only the worthyest winners will do so, right? Wrong! While you may be skilled, the target is so small as to not differentiate between shooters as much as depend heavily on luck. You may be dead on target, yet miss one or more shots. So equally skilled shooters may have wildly different results.

Chineese 8 ball is pushing the boundary of what is in fact the "barrel spread" of human players, when you consider all shots are supposed to be possible to make. Remember also that in 8 ball you can choose your shots, so as to bypass the problems. Pyramid has smaller pockets, but some shots cant be made, so it doesnt' count. For games other than 8 ball, the Chineese 8 ball table has passed that boundary to a certain extent. You could easily set up a 10 ball rack that would require multiple attempts (even without clusters) for the very best players in the world. Is this what you want pool to be? Runouts coming once every blue moon?

I sincerely hope that we never get to the point where this table becomes the standard pool table. This is coming from a snooker player btw.
On her website, Allison Fisher is trying to sell her Chinese 8-ball table set up at her home, which is her only home practice table. I'm assuming that to mean she put it in there with the hope that the extremely tight pockets would help improve her already very high level of shotmaking accuracy.

A table like this is certainly well beyond the extreme in terms of pocket tightness, in my opinion, which I'm guessing is why she is selling it.

Its just a completely different game.

I think 8-Ball on Chinese tables is a great idea, but for 9-Ball and 10-Ball (I've never seen anyone try on youtube, but I presume people have) it just doesn't seem like it would work. The nature of those games requires a lot more cue ball movement and you can't plot your path multiple ways as you can in 8-Ball, so some racks become simply impossible, which isn't likely to be appealing to the viewer.

Now straight pool could be interesting on a Chinese table...

I like the 5 inch pockets and correct angles

perhaps a little smaller

golf doesn't reduce the standard size of the hole because pros putt good

a standard size hole gives credit to the game
,people have more fun when the game is not made so tough that only
people willing to dedicate their life to the game can make a ball

as far the pros, very few people care what they do anyway
as proved by the almost complete lack of interest in them

just a few groupies

Once again, the debate about tight ass pockets....goes right along with "gambling makes you a BETTER player" well then SOMEONE please explain to me, how did we LOSE the Mosconi Cup AGAIN......with a STACKED team of tightass pocket players....who LOVE to gamble? Let me reword that....lost just don't quite describe what nust happened AGAIN....AND AGAIN....AND AGAIN.....AND AGAIN!!! Where in the hell are ALL those world beaters hiding, they practice their asses off on TIGHT POCKETS.....AND WILL DARE THE DEVIL FOR SOME ACTION!!! Where is the PROOF that tight ass pockets make you a better player???? Where is the PROOF that gambling makes you a better player????? OUR best of the BEST got their asses handed to them on a plate of shit on a table with BIGGER POCKETS!!!! Maybe instead of playing team Europe on a table with 4 1/2" pockets....we should BEG TEAM EUROPE to play on a table with 5 1/2" corners and 6" sides.....THEN MAYBE ALL THAT PRACTICE ON TIGHT ASS POCKETS WILL PAY OFF!!!

You want kids in this sport??? Show them how they can make a living....a GOOD living as a PRO.....first!!! They ALL know if they're good enough to play PRO at Golf, Football, Basketball, Boxing, hell....just about ANY sport that the Pro level pays money to....they can make a living! This sport can't even support itself with the so called Pro's we ALREADY acknowledge.....do we really need more Pro's at the top that can't pay an electric bill without the support of a wife or girlfriend with a job!!

The fact is esports is going to take over the kids that are not of the extremely gifted in the real sports and the money for that now being invested in esports dwarfs anything else other than the big sports but that gap is closing real fast also , pool simply is not part of the big investors game and it will never be , being a pro gamer now makes several times a pool player that gap is increasing every day also that info is not hard to find on the net
When gambling passes that will change the earnings a bit but it won't change the gap that will increase as everyday goes it's simply not entertaining enough to compete

I said quite a while back Chinese 8 ball will never fly in this country, everyone wanted to argue it was the next comming of Christ in the pool world....millions of dollars to be had!! Some people wanted a taste of that koolaid so bad they went out and bought some oc them Chinese 8 ball tables hoping to cash in on the next biggest thing in pool.....then some time passes by, and then.... Chinese 8 ball tables FOR SALE....USED BUT IN GREAT CONDITION only, who wants them....LOL You CAN'T fix pool by making the pockets tighter! You CAN'T fix pool by changing the rules in an effort to handicap the players so that ALL feel like they have a chance to win. Younwant to fix pool....then fix it from the TOP down, the Professional players should be in a division by themselves and NOT having to play against amateurs what-so-ever. The top spots need to be earned, not assignes, and the TOP Pros need to be decided from the whole world of players....not just the United States. Make the pockets standard 4 1/2" and 5". Get rid of the BS rules, get rid of the double elimination format, run longer races, incorporate a maximum time limit per match. Skill level test the players to pick the best in the world, use all the rest of the players that found out they weren't even close to being Pro level to create sub level divisions of amateurs for world amateur championships. THEN and only then, once pool has been organized for the first time, and there's actually a real ladder system in place for players to climb up to the ranks of the Pros....then start seeking out sponsorship funding for and ORGANISED SPORT WORLD WIDE!!!

Don't want to fix pool the right way, then join a pool league and keep on *****ing about pool being broken.

One more thing, Chinese 8 ball has one purpose, and that's to sell Chinese made pool tables, to support a Chinese pool game, that can only be played on Chinese built and sold pool table.

That right there is the Ten Commandments! So let it be said so let it be written.

Why nobody listens to words of wisdom is beyond me. Wish this would all happen and happen fast. Bring some prestige and money into the game.
