When you wanted a Sugartree, but couldn't afford one...

On the far left is the Mali. Wrapless, 13.5mm monster tip size, great feedback with a slight ping on slower speed hits. Lots of spin on the ball.

Poor man's Sugartree ;)

I want that Hagan back!! Lol. I owned that at one time and it was a hair too light was the ONLy reason I let her go. That is a ball making machine you have there.

Gotta dig an old Mali. My buddy met me at the pool hall last night. He shoots with a Meucci but just picked up an old Mali and brought it to try out.

Over the last few days I dug out my entire cue collection. Most of them had not seen the light of days for years. I had a few surprises, cues I forgot I had. One of them is a Mali. Totally for got I had it. Nothing special, plain cue, but as I remember it plays pretty sporty. I'll take it next time I go shooting. :)

Thanks for showing off!

Thanks for the compliments.

Trav, I really like the Hagan, it's my player. I lusted after this particular one for the longest time fore shelling out the dough for it. The great thing is the shafts are interchangeable with the Mali, so if I ever wanted a nicer shaft to play with in a bar or something, I could just bring it to use with the plain Mali cue.

The leather case and cue were scored on Goodwill. I replaced the interior and cleaned the case. The Mali was pristine aside from some scratches in the ferrule and one ding in the butt.

Chopdoc, these are probably the best budget cues I've tried and they seem to hold up well over time. I really like the the insert on the shaft has a slight recess almost a countersink type feature that makes it ever so slightly easier to locate the pin. Thinking of getting a break shaft for it to complete the set. The only issue I have with it, is that the butt is like 1.33 or something... it's a friggin' tree trunk of a cue.

Sorry to ramble on, but this is my setup I usually bring for playing sessions.
Hagan, and standard shaft at 12.75mm (nine-ball, eight-ball, 1p, etc)
OB1 shaft at 12.3mm (for snooker)
Mali with 13.5mm shaft (could be a breaker/backup/loaner player)

Also, as an aside (Eric can correct me if he reads this) I think I remember that Eric Crisp wrote something about liking Mali cues and basing the taper of his early shafts on them. I phrased this thread because When I played with the Mali the first time, it really did remind me of the Sugartree I'd played with a long time ago.

I have one of those too.
I got it at Good Will for $15 with a nice leather case, but neither as nice as yours. The shaft on mine got wet at some point and is warped ~1".
The butt is truly huge!

Funny thing is the shaft grain has some wiggle towards the spine but it's still straight as a laser. I picked up this pair mainly for the cool case and at the time I thought I'd sell the Mali when it arrived. That is until I played with it...

You have a good set up all the way around. That is all anyone needs right there. The case looks neat and has that retro feel to it also.

Just a tip.

If you want anyone to look at one of your cues, dont take a picture of it with that Hagan cue.

I couldnt even see the other cue.

Dang that Hagan is nice.

 I love those old Mali cues. I did indeed draw a lot of inspiration from them, including the general taper shape of the shaft, larger diameter joint, and beefy butt taper. It just feels like a man cue. Best production cue ever, IMO, for playability & feel.
