Anybody out there know where the term "kitchen" originated?

As used to say "you must shoot from the kitchen"

Back in 1932, Bill McDonald had a pool table in his house but his living room was not big enough for the entire table. One end had to be placed 'in the kitchen' for it to fit. The rest is history.

 that's it? lol wow I wonder how many more pool terms are out there that are results of little stories like this.

What about headspot? lol

Wow, that is such a cool story. True or not, until someone can provide another answer, I will stick with it.

Thanks,

Larry

How close you might be!

According to Mike Shamos' Illustrated Encyclopedia of Billiards, the question has been the subject of some speculation but the best explanation known is that in the 1800s, many American homes didn't have room for both a billiard table and a dining room table. The solution was a billiards table that had cover converting it into a dining table. The dining rooms used, which were often barely large enough to contain the table, would be placed so that the head rail would face the connecting kitchen door, thus afforded the player room for the backswing without hitting a wall. The player was therefore either half or sometimes fully (literally) "in the kitchen" when breaking the balls.

Bill mcdonald used to come through indiana a lot and would tell the kitchen story all the time.super nice guy but he had only 1 leg, that mustve sucked.

I've got nothing against his one leg, problem is neither did he.

I watched him play Louie Roberts a set of one pocket back in the early 80's. Bill must have been 70 years old or so, but still a character. They were going over the rules before they played and this was when I first heard the 'kitchen' history lesson, as they were stating if they were playing the base of the ball or not.

The most hilarious part was Louie telling Bill that there would be no issue on the 'one foot on the floor' rule, as Bill had no choice in the matter. Bill couldn't stop laughing and kept repeating Louie's line over and over.

I heard that on Bill's head stone it says something like..."Rest in the Kitchen"?? I think the BCA have since credited him with the term.
