Like Tickler used to show

is anyone still getting those fancy cues anymore

or have we run off all the people that do buy them

lets see some beauties

Say good by to the America you grow up in.

With the government trying and succeeding in taking over all aspects of our lives they now set their sights on people with ivory. Since most large cues have ivory and the Nazi's are monitoring this site why would any smart person show their cues here?

Shame

I can't blame collectors for not showing off their cues with Ivory. It is a shame how our hobby of cue collecting was changed in one day by one man. I am afraid this is just the beginning.

NO more . . .

Eric, got it "right" . . . putting yourself out there as the owner of cues that might have questionable materials does not sound like an intelligent move . . .

But hopefully, what we will see is new more creative cues using alternative materials . . . granted that may be a challenge - but perhaps now it will be more about the design, quality of materials chosen, execution and of course playability.

I am curious, Is this site being monitored?

Bavafongul has a good thread on the legality of ivory going forward and it sems that only ivory handled cues would present problems as a general statement for people outside NY and CA. Most cues would fall under the legal guidelines made prior to mid June of this year.

Like Dean, I miss seeing some of the fabulous cues that were shown. The mix of participants on the forum has changed significantly. It seems that people go to the trouble to shoot nice photos of their cues and reveive critiques with a negative slant...so why go to the trouble?

props

But, Dean, you never post pics...drives some of us nuts...but masterful marketing - props

I'll take a chance

The best thing to do is get rid of any cues that have Ivory in them. The penalty for
knowingly selling them is just as severe as owning them. So send them to me.
I am pretty sure you can give them away and be okay, and also claim them as
a tax write off, maybe.Anyway you will have peace of mind, and not be worried
about the Ivory Police knocking on your door. I know what you.re thinking. Why
would jackpot put his self in jeopardy for us. Well pool has been pretty good to
me for all these years and I think it's time I give something back. And another
thing, Deano. I will post pictures of them for everyone to enjoy. And if this silly
ban is ever lifted I will gladly return them for only the postage and storage fee.
Since Deano and I have been good friends for over fifty years he will be more
than happy to vouch for my honesty and sincerity. Also, after you have sent
your cue(s) do not contact me. We don't want to leave any trail for the authority
to follow. Direct any questions or problems you may have to Deano. HURRY

I think part of the problem is the harsh critique and comments some Azers tend to express about cues
that aren't even theirs. Unless the cue-maker was Szam, Mobley, Searing, Black Boar....you get the drift.
The cues made by lesser known, or relatively unknown, cue-makers get judged differently and minutia
comments are expressed about what's not perfect.

So folks figure why expose myself to that and if the cue had ivory in it, forget about it.....then they really
should expect to get dumped on. You don't see that when someone posts a photo of their ebony/ivory BB cue.

AZ has lost its zip n go.......its future is not bright.......I wish it weren't so but the truth cannot be ignored
nor denied....I think it should be redone........all paid members........everyone pays at least a $1.00 per month
or $1.50 ($18.00 annual) or maybe make it $20 but AZ has to change its approach to earn & deserve the money.

The AZ site would still allow visitors to browse the site for free but absolutely no posting privileges. What about
$15.00 annually for members but they have no selling privileges but $25.00 annually ($10.00 more) if you wish
to sell anything. The truth is when you give something away for free, people do not appreciate what they have
but if & when you charge for that same service, it instantly becomes more important.to its users.

Good points.

I would add to that $100.00 annual membership to be a gold member
and only gold members could list anything for sale.

It would get the nits out of here quickly.

I can't help but agree with you, with the caveat that even pictures of well regarded cuemakers get their share of negatives from the trolls. I've put up quite a few cue pictures on this site over the years. Now and then, there can be a troll, who never has anything of his own to show, that comments on inlays being off center, and the like. Of course, a lot of criticism is due to camera distortion, but these trolls don't have the sophistication to know that in the first place.

But, there is a common theme, that posting of nice cues has gone down, and that's a shame. Regarding a pay for play that you suggest? I wouldn't be opposed. Might cut down on the troll behavior. The ivory issue, of course, has a life all its own.

All the best,
WW

I agree, however, I actually think the critics are not trying to be trolls. I think they think their opinion is a contribution. So someone buys a nice cue for $2K - $15K and some critic wants to point out what he feels is wrong? Yet they seem to never post pictures of their cues.

I see cues I like, cues I love, cues I would love to own, and some I do not like. I would never tell someone else what is wrong with his cue IMO because we all have our own taste. I would simply not comment. I have posted a few cues that only got about 6-8 replies from friends. I figured most guys were not that into it and moved on.

great cue you have there

i can't help but notice the friendly demeanor we have on this post
the ideas are thoughtful and thought provoking

jackpot is an old friend of mine with a very funny sense of humor
his crackpot comments make me laugh

he made the Libra cues, bought the last cue Balabushka shipped, bought 1 of the last 6 cues shipped by Gus Szamboti,if not the last one, owned the nicest Gus Szamboti box cue I ever saw

when ever he responds, read the words looking for humor and I think you will get a much needed laugh

Jack once bet on me to win a pool game and couldn't take the pressure of betting on someone who couldn't play,so he pulled up

another time we bet i could make a 70 foot putt with 15 foot of break, when i missed it
Jack questioned my intelligence. We were getting over 500 to 1 on the money, what did he expect?

Thanks to all the kind responses,I have been concerned with too much criticism and nasty remarks
on too many threads

dean

I don't know how to post pictures on here

Phil it is always good to hear from you
Matt,your comments are always appreciated

Eric, why don't you sell me the cue I keep wanting?

Well now, only since Dean has asked. Here’s a cue I received from Samsara several months ago. As was the case with my Manzino Gatsby cue, no ivory was used. The cue has tiger eye stones for inlays and ring work. The entire process for cutting, honing and polishing these individual stones before inlaying is insanely time-consuming. The afzalia burl fantails were created using their uniquely creative process which employs a wood working technique known as intarsia.

IMO, Samsara has always made cues that played as well as they look. For this cue, I had Jim and Dave fit it with one of their new LD True Shafts. For those not familiar with it, the shaft closely resembles other low deflection products on the market but uses a solid maple rather than a laminated shaft. I’m very happy with the balance, feel and playability of this cue.

I think as others have said, the ivory uncertainty has put a damper on cue collecting. Cue shows will feel that impact as well. The ICCS appears to be moving towards an every other year event. I doubt we'll ever see it return to California. Anyone but me notice that the ACA website hasn't seen an update for years? There hasn't been a maker inducted into the HOF since 2011. I can think of several that should be. Like everything else about pool, interest seems to be waning. I truly hope that will change in time.

All thanks to a Government that has Absolutely exceeded it's Authority. Not to mention that the Nation is nearly 20 Trillion in debt & The Government has decided it needs to go after Pool Cue Builders & Collectors. Perfect.

Oh yeah, Awesome Cue. That cue is just a whole different league from just a average high price cue.

You are right about the criticism of unknown cuemakers. It does make one not want to post. Who needs their butt kicked by a stranger? There are a number of cuemakers in the U.S. who build really great cues but they are not interested in criticism from, in many cases, wannabes or know it alls.

If the unknown(or known) makes a great cue, it will get praise. If it's not a great cue and people start posting crap like "second to none" "perfection" "next greatest cuemaker" people ARE gonna call you on it. And that's the way it should be.

There are some "top 10" cuemakers that their work is nowhere close to the top 2 or 3.

It's not our fault if "people" cannot tell the difference, or it's their friends cue, or they "know" the maker - no matter how bad they want the cue to be like the top 2 or 3 makers won't make a difference, it's not gonna happen. Getting butthurt isn't gonna help either.
