From all of my travels, I'd have to agree with this. I've had mediocre players willing to play hundred dollar sets just to see where we're at. Nowadays, most places require an ID and a Fargo rating just to enter the pool hall.
The ID thing I get, as Metro Sport Bar in Peoria, AZ had incident years ago, with under age kid, with false ID. Door man got fooled, kid gun drunk, played Evil Kenevel on Crochrocket, bought farm. Metro was in deep Doo Doo.
Fargo is not what I am use too, AZ Rating Card, not big deal to get. Maybe Fargo is new system, but not going to Fargo, North Dakota to get rated.
getting action in a room doesnt mean to most as being able to get the a road player or the best player in the area to play for big money even up.

AZ dropped their rating system. All of the notable tournaments and leagues in the Phoenix valley report to Fargo now. Go play sometime and see for yourself.

Have not done a tournament in over 5 years, the novelty got lost long ago.
Old system worked well, see no reason to change.
So with this new system if I got the bug, I would have no rating. So that take me out of loop.
You can't walk into a place as a stranger and expect a spot. If your play is well known, if you have a robust fargo rating, then you may be able to negotiate a spot. There were a very few times in ten years of near nightly gambling when a stranger came up wanting to play and then wanted a spot. I remember those times at least happening because they were funny! We all knew stories of strangers coming to town and the spot shifting from two balls one way to two balls the other way over a few days!
You can almost always get a spot from somebody in a crowded place though. Come with hundred dollar bills dripping out of your pockets and somebody will take a chance.
As I was replying to your post I remembered your post in another thread. You are absolutely right, a lock artist can't get action everywhere they go! Smart gamblers don't give lock artists enough action to say grace over. I can think of at least a half dozen local places to walk in the door and get action. I can't think of a single place to be guaranteed walking into the place and finding a sucker every time!

you get action if new to a room by starting small finding a player weaker or around your speed and playing for small stakes. that establishes your speed in the room. from there you can give or take spots and work them up or down depending on how good you are at negotiating and how you appear to the others.

Fargo, ND was stop one on a two stop trip. Then on to Moorehead, MN next town over, another place I would never on purpose go to. Joke about Moorhead, MN was asking a local if Sun ever shined there. Reply was quite funny, usually for few hours on August 6th. Both place do not need Dermotoligist special in skin cancer. Few days of sun, weather is crap, cold, fog, rain, it sucks.
