Where is the best spot in america to play pool?

There is a room on the West coast of Florida. Can't think of the name off hand but a lot of pros play there all the time. Rodney i know used to play there also.

The best place to play pool in the USA is my house.

I can understand that for sure. But not everyone has the luxury of a subsidized senior rec center to play in, so you shouldn't be so harsh on pool halls who have to exist in the business world, and things they do to stay in business, like offering beer or having b+c tournaments. Common sense really.

Why do you say subsidized, as the resident of our community support the room, with our annual dues, that also pay for monitors, janitors, and support staff, insurance, water, electricity, etc., etc., etc.

BTW I do not have problem with Beer or Liquor. I have problems with people who drink to much, and get out of control. Bar Owners & Staff who over serve and send patrons out to their cars drunk. So they can go done the road, and maybe kill me, or some friend, or cripple some person minding their own business.

I know all about business, as I was self employed over 20 years in a very competitive business. I survived because I ran the business like a business, not a hobby. I change with the time, did not operate in the past.

There was a new show on TV I watched for the first time last night, it is on Spike, called Bar Rescue. A lot of Pool Bar Owners could learn why they are not surviving watching this show IMHO.

BTW I am expressing MHO, and that is what the Forum are all about exchanging ideas, and information.

BTW when I use to go out and play in tournament on some Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays, or Sundays. I did not wear a shirt like “VINCE” in the Movie Color of Money. That said my NAME.

Exactly. It is subsidized by the community, it is not a business.

That's kind of ironic since you've made numerous posts about how "real pool rooms" don't have beer/booze, jukeboxes, etc. Which as anyone knows sure isn't how things operate today. B+C tournaments have been around for decades, so not sure why that was such a shocker for you.

...so what tournaments did you play in again? Because you're pretty well known amongst valley players, at least from posting in this forum. :D

Exactly. It is subsidized by the community, it is not a business.

No it is not subsidized, it is part of our recreation facilities paid for by Annual Members Dues. Our Bowl Alley are open to Non Community Members, Over 55, but they PAY MORE TO BOWL.

You use the word subsidized like we are on GA, No Government Assistance!

You missed it, the good old days when Pool Rooms were about Pool, not the Food, Drinks, Juke Box, or Dart..JUST POOL.

Also I mentioned my friend owning (2) Pool Bars in PHX, both catered to the Recreational Pool Player, as he admits he was in the BAr aka Booze Business, and the Pool Tables did not pay the RENT. BOOZE SALES DID! Some Recreational Pool Players DRINK more than Tea, Coffee.

Which is a subsidy. You do realize the word "subsidies" applies not only to government functions, right?

Homeowners pay dues. Part of dues go towards operating that room, correct? Anyone that lives in the development can play in the room, right? How about non residents? I don't know why that word upsets you so much, I didn't say government subsidy?

I'm sorry you are upset, but I used the word correctly: your rec center hall is not a business it relies on dues from the community to operate, not on sales to the public. It isn't government assistance, and I didn't say it was?

Nice assumption, but I spent plenty of time in a room just like that, the 211 Club in Seattle which was a NW institution and had been around forever and ever. Guess what? It closed over 10 years ago. Times have changed, and thinking that business model is the norm or even remotely approaching the norm is 'living in the past'. Also why are we using color?

Your friend told you right. There is not a single pool hall in the valley that pays the bills off table time vs booze, so by your metric there is not a single serious or actual pool hall in the Valley? Hate to tell you this, but It's the same everywhere and has been for years. Doesn't mean they are not "pool halls" or worth looking down on. Movie theaters today make way more off of concessions than they do off of ticket sales, doesn't mean they are still not theaters. Same thing. This has been a fun thread derail, but I am not sure why you are so upset over this, 'unfair ranking systems' and the economy of California?

I'm in LA the past 2 months and its a joke, 20,000,000 people and 30 lock smiths with ZERO gamble, Damn shame too, and they have $$$ too, thats what makes me sick. they wont flip a coin for $100 but will play $100/pool-wow that shows lots of gamble-NOT!!! If they took a chance they might win something I got my nose open, come bust me, but dont stick me up. But they take no chances and never make scores, they grind on each other for pennys. Just more than the table time, which might be high stakes else where. I never seen anything like it in 26 years. They will throw $$ in the fire at a casino knowing they got the worst of it, but wont bet anything on pool. What ever I cant fix their problems.

I don't get this. You say people won't flip a coin but will bet on pool then go on to say they will throw money at a casino (essentially flipping a coin) but won't bet on pool.

Montana is very Pool friendly. The community work together, ever time I go fishing I take my Cue, most small towns have a Bar or two with pool tables, and a weekly tournament. The turn out for these little tournaments are good, it is open play, and if you place you don't get any bad check, just GREEN.

Buy a house on the santa monica sand, open your own room. If you don't open a room, drop by hob.

eric ask you girl where she wants to move to.....if she isnt happy you will never be happy... that is if she is going with you......if not move to some place where you money goes further....

Fatboy

you and Archer are pretty good friends! surely you have talked to him about the southeast.if you move to Augusta, you will be a 5 hr radius from a slew of spots.

best place to play

My favorite place is Kolbys in Phoenix,
great people, great weather, great food, did I say great people?
It's not that far from where you are now , you should at least give it a try.

Sorry. U R that bad of a player, we all watched U play in the DC ring game :p:(

It aint a matter of lessions, i aint that weak of a player, The game wasnt that far off, I'm just not used to wet tables so I lose the handle on the rock sometimes. its the principal, I can play a champion any time I want and do often.

Phoenix. No question.

Specifically, which pool halls?

I've lived here for 20+ years and play 4-6 / week. There's some good shooters and good pool halls, but BEST in the US? I don't know that I'd go that far, but maybe you know something I don't know?

Montana IS pool friendly but....... I wouldn't expect any action. Nothing like driving to a tournament when it is -40 and not getting a money game the entire weekend. Atlanta sounds really nice for pool.

Well I call BS.

When I hear someone say "Nobody gambles", I roll my eyes.

Perfect example is a local poolroom owner was telling me a group of shortstops came into town and asked for action in the area. He told them to go to another pool hall maybe 2 miles away that is known for action if asked.

They didnt drive 2 miles.....

Indy has a great room with known levels of various skills and action is easy to come by. Yet I hear "Nobody gambles".

There are lots of games out there, if anyone really wants to play.

As Buddy Hall says, "Most want to tell 'Who shot John' stories instead of playing."

There is a bank game in Paducah (yes little Paducah) some DCC Masters of the Table have said is the best in country. Louisville has a ton too.

Jeremy Jones, Gary Luat, and "others" get all they want here. Plus we have good BBQ.

So if you really want to gamble at pool, and not want to tell "Who shot John" stories, they are out there.

Give me a break,

Ken

Pool IMHO is a game of skill, mind control, and concentration. If you are having to gamble you have a chance of loosing.

I personally do not like giving money away to strong player I have zero chance of beating no matter what the spot. So why play that person for money, when the outcome is certain that I will loose.

If I am playing someone for money who is a lessor skill level than me, I might as well rob them with gun and mask, as I am not competing, IMHO I am stealing.
