Where to go in the USA???

Hi guys,

Next year my missus and I are planning our first trip to the States and will probably be spending 2 weeks there. What we are thinking of doing is breaking the trip up into 3 legs ie, 3 cities for 5 days each. She loves shopping, I don't.

So the plan is this, while she is shopping during the daytime i will be in a pool hall getting my fix. I'm really looking forward to playing new versions of pool like 9 ball and 14.1.

What i'm looking for is good local knowledge of where she can find good shopping and i can find great pool rooms that will help me learn the new games and soak up a bit of your pool culture at the same time.

So far we are thinking of New York, Chicago and Vegas???

Any better suggestions?

You can't beat New York. If you want shopping, pool halls, great food, entertainment NY is the place to be. Philadelphia and Washington DC are both nice cities to visit. Plenty to see. Both cities have a mint so you can get see how our money is made. DC also has the Smithonison Institute which is a group of museums.

From what i hear there're a lot of great players in new york and florida. it's also my understanding that they don't like to play for fun
 
I'd want to do New York, Amsterdam Billiards.
I'd want to do Chicago, Chris Billiards.
I'd want to do some place in Florida because you gotta do Disney World.
 
It depends on the time of year, NYC can be expensive but the shopping is awesome depending on what your looking for. Arizona has a ton of malls and plenty of rooms to get a game, but if you come now you will be scorched by over 110 degree weather. I think LA would be a good place to go. :cool:

where would be best to go in florida round about the kissimmee area? i have been there 5 times on holida and next time i go i am gonna take my cues with me and get some games. also what is the kind of money guys will be wanting to play for around that area? thanks in advance
 
Can't go wrong with NYC if you want a big city with shopping and pool. Chicago and LA are good choices too, I have family in Chicago and there's always tons to see there. Not as familiar with LA but there are lots of good players there. Vegas might be nice as you could do some day trips to see the southwest. I live in DC and there are plenty of attractions, but the pool scene is weak, especially in the city.

The best place to go (IMO) would be Vegas.

It's a great place to visit, you're close to Los Angeles, The Grand Canyon, shopping, pool halls, etc etc etc.

It would also be great for you to try and schedule your trip during these events

US Open (Chesapeake, Virginia is beautiful)
Super Billiard Expo (Valley Forge, Pennsylvania - great place!)
Derby City Classic (Louisvile, Kentucky is another great city)

We have Disney World, Sea World, and Universal Studios here in Orlando - but I have met up with some people from the forums that have visited here at the peak tourist season and were unable to rent a car because everything was booked solid. It sort of sucks to save your money on a vacation only to arrive here and be at the mercy of public transportation - which IMO - the public transportation here sucks.

Also, if you decide to go to Vegas - you won't be very far from Los Angeles - and in Anaheim you can visit Disneyland - and Danny K's is right there. It's a win-win.
 
Well coming from the UK NYC would be the shortest flight. I flew from Irland and germany to the eastcoast im sure your going to be going crazy after 6 hours of an 8 hour flight.

You wont go wrong with NYC you got Matthatin to go shopping Time Square and see the MTV studio and tons of other things. I would go to NYC.
 
hmm Dinesy world? Can't say that i've ever wanted to be raped of all my money for the privilege of standing in queues all day :p not my thing really.

So far i'm hearing NYC as a strong contender with Vegas, LA and Chicago fighting it out for 2nd place.

@Blackjack: Great idea to schedule around some tournaments/tours I'll defiantly keep that in mind. I would also like to check out a trade show as i would never forgive myself if i didn't buy a cue when i was out there :thumbup:

As for the other attractions like sea world and universal studios, we don't really like the touristy stuff. I'd prefer to sit in a bar and chat with people and get to know the 'real' culture. 4 hours in a bar listening to war story's over i pint is far more appealing then watching caged animals do tricks. just my opinion.

@JoseV: Not to fussed about long flights, i've done a 24hr travel to New Zealand and was ok with that. Also fly out to china now and then. Once in NYC it will be a few internal flights to other cities.

Don't worry , you won't hurt my feelings. I live here and like most everybody else, I avoid Disney World traffic like the plague. Tourist stuff is not my thing either!

Danny K's is a great pool hall! It should be on your list of "must visit" pool halls if you decide to go west ...

Also - the Grand Canyon is by far the most beautiful experience you will ever have - I highly recommended not leaving here until you walk on the glass!

I fully understand, and agree with wanting to get out and experience the culture of a different country. That's a pretty tall order, however, because of the diversity here in the U.S. NYC is quite different from LA, and Seattle is quite different from Miami. I've been traveling for a living for more than 25 years, now, and a few cities I would consider visiting are: New York (a must), Chicago, San Diego (rather than LA), Miami, Seattle, San Francisco, and Las Vegas. There are many, many others that are also great to visit, but these are where I would start. I can't really help with the pool halls, because virtually all of my pool is played on my home table. Good luck, and once you decide where you are going, I bet you might even be able to meet up with some of the local AzB members.


Edit: Oh, and Honolulu, also. Hawaii is a great state to visit!

New York is great of course but I'm particular to Chicago (I grew up there). It's a big city with great shopping, great architecture, world class food and lake shore drive. I know you didn't mention great food but that's something I look for when I travel.

Vegas is a no brainer in my opinion, just for the experience. There's so much shopping in Vegas that you might not see your wife for days at a time. And like Blackjack said, you can drive from there to LA, or the other way around I supose.

Timing is important too. If you go around one of the big turnaments, you'll be around people with similar interests.

BTW, you really should try some one pocket, it's the best game in pool.
 
I find that I like to visit the largest ball of twine in Cawker City, KS at least twice a year. It also has a very nice picnic area.

Someone mentioned you're from the UK. I'd like to visit England one day. Specifically to visit Hethel. Been a Lotus owner for nearly forty years. Want to see "home".

Having said that, My list is Washington, DC. Whether you love us or hate us, it's the seat of our government. All the Memorials, Smithsonian, National Aviation and Space Museum, National Art Gallery. Don't miss the Vietnam Memorial. Never been so moved by anything in my life!

Las Vegas is a world unto itself. Don't get stuck wandering the casino's. Red Rock and Valley of Fire National Monuments, Grand Canyon in Arizona, Lake Mead and Hoover Dam, Death Valley, Zion Park in Utah. Lots and lots to see outside the fantasy world that's Vegas.

San Francisco and the Bay Area holds a special spot in my heart. The Golden Gate Bridge, Muir Woods, Alcatraz, Yosemite, Napa wine country, Monterey Bay and if you're into driving, Highway One along the California coast.

You can play pool anytime. See the sights and thanks for visiting us.

If that is a priority, the only event you need to have on your "Must" list is the Super Billiards Expo in March. Valley Forge PA isn't that far from NYC, so you could well combine those two stops.

SBE is the biggest consumer billiard show I have ever seen. If you can't find a cue you want there, they haven't made it yet!

The Valley Forge convention is about 30 minutes from Philaldephia and a little less than 2 hours from NYC. You won't find a better pool convention than this.
