Where's Cocobolo Cowboy?

With apologies to Coco I will tell one more story of the match track. It was a "black" match track. However, I kept my horses with a black friend and was well known by the owner and enough people I was welcome there. Few dared come there unless they were known.

I was keeping an eye on my horse, you never let a horse be unattended or someone might "stop" it with drugs, when an old truck pulled into the track. It had two by fours building up a box from the bed and a horse in there. I got a friend to watch my horse and eased over to see the sights. A little old white man with clean but old khaki pants and a long sleeved work shirt in midsummer had got out of the truck. His wife was wearing a midcalf dress from a hundred years ago and a sun bonnet. Looked like sheep in a pack of wolves among the con men and gamblers.

The horse hadn't seen a curry comb in months if ever but there was no disguising the racing plates on his feet or the lines of the horse if you looked past the ragged coat.

I had about ten years in pool halls under my belt at the time and this package looked far too perfect to me, I didn't want to play. Somebody came up asking me what I thought and I told them the same thing, stay away. I kept my mouth shut other than when the guy I knew well came up asking.

The old man eventually found a race and pocketed an easy $1500. I talked to my friend when I got back to the barn. "They live in Mississippi and know every match track for two hundred miles around. That horse is their retirement. They run him once or twice a month for $500 to $2500. He is AAA, close to Top AAA.(100 speed index) He runs as fast as he needs to!"

Okay, this is it. This is exactly it. Anybody that claims Hu is making these stories up, just doesn't know. You haven't been there. I lived this stuff, as a teenager and into my twenties, that is exactly how it was.

Heck there are people on here that hate my guts , and I'm one of the nicest people I know.

Friends, enemies, and some that aren't too sure! Some of my better friendships on here were formed over the years with people that originally attacked me because their friends didn't like me. When we got to know each other we found a lot more to like than dislike.

Every recipe needs a little spice and those that are enemies and those we annoy provide a little spice!

It doesn't really matter what activity we are talking about, there is more value to doing than talking. I suspect we can choose any activity and we will find the top competitors out doing instead of talking on a computer.

When you work at pool or anything else 40-60 hours a week or more you don't come on the computer to talk about it in your free time. I was a CAD operator for years as a designer/draftsman. I have never learned computer games, too close to what I got paid to do and had to do for a living.

I suspect if SVB is on a computer you will find him on a fishing related site, not a pool site.

pros in most any sport dont hang with the lesser players. just how it is.
and after meeting most of them, you wouldnt want to hang out with them either.

just like you didnt hang with the people in the lower grades of you in school. just how it was.

mostly the pros that did come on wanted to have their backs patted or make money off of us somehow.
and werent well receive for it.

It is a two way street to be fair. Some pro's came on here expecting to be treated like gods and when they found they weren't the fun went out of it for them. On the other hand, some on the forum thought the pro's should serve as mentors while getting nothing in return.

I have been friends with quite a few world class people at one thing or another. One reason was that I let them lead conversations. I don't know Shane but if I did I would listen to him talk about fishing or homelife, maybe the latest annoyance with travel. If he started talking about pool I would be all ears but I wouldn't be the one leading the conversation there.

I don't know the current situation and wouldn't admit it if I did but we have had a handful of pro's on here that stayed for years. They are using anonymous handles and aren't big at "look at me, I am a star!" They are content to let their posts stand or fall on their own merit, they don't try to make pronouncements from on high.

We have a few pool legends behind anonymous user names too. Again, they come here to be forum members, not have special demands made of them.

After 9 pages, I just figured out we are chasing the wrong rabbit. We have kinda poked at the more important issue but it apparently escaped examination because it just failed to hop up and run, so here goes "Why is CoCo not here?"
Something is bad wrong. CoCo loved this place and was always posting -- he was truly prolific. I realize the plausible causes for his disappearance are countless and potentially unpleasant, but, regardless, we really need to nail down exactly "Why".

My concern is not solely based on CoCo's welfare (although I am worried) but is also grounded in AZB's overall well being. The inescapable truth is that we cannot lose folks like CoCo without incurring significant cost. I realize that new folks show up every day, but it takes years for members like CoCo to develop, and their absence leaves a big hole. I also realize that some losses are irreversible -- death, intractable disputes, etc. -- but if something can be done to restore the status quo ante, we need it to be done. Every time I see an "ID This Cue" thread, the sting of losing Tate, and others, is felt again. I do not know if anything can be done, but without knowing the "Whys", the realization of remedies is remote.

Don't forget Fatboy he was a interesting fella as well and yes the 5 ball should be orange ! Ha ha
Has he left? I realize I haven't seen a post lately. And yes, of course, the 5 will always be orange on AZB.

The list of absent members goes on and on. I lurked for years and only recently joined in the fray, but still I can sense the impact of all of the lost voices. A complete list is beyond my time, so in deference, I won't even begin. I mention Tate only because his depth of knowledge was so incredible. (There are many others like Tate whom I have encountered in my deeper dives who also have blessed this place with their incredible knowledge and experience.)

It's a lot like sitting in the pool hall watching the door and waiting for someone in particular who never comes in. Despite there being a bunch of people in here, somethings missing.

The site has been around for over 20 years. Many things can happen over a period of 20+ years. Some just get tired of the same old, same old. Some folks have passed on, some have been banned, etc.
Things change/happen. Such is life. That being said, there are certainly members that I miss.

Noting that Coco bailed on New Years I am hoping it was a one year resolution. We will know just shortly!

Hu
Interesting. Maybe someone bet him he could not stay off AZB for a year? I sure hope he's not been saving up all his comments for NYD, because if he is, it's gonna be one hell of a mess -- like the morning I forgot a pressure cooker full of grits on the stove. I cleaned up the mess in an hour, but the kids are still reminding me about it every time I get a pot out.
