Which game do you like the best, 9 ball, 10 ball, 8 ball, or 1 Pocket/14-1? And why?

I like all of them, but my favorite game is straight pool (no, I'm not an older player!). Problem is it's hard to find people who play straight pool anymore :frown:

Out of the choices above, I prefer 8 ball slightly more than the others, though 9 ball keeps me on my position-playing toes :smile:

As a necessary evil I play mostly 9-ball because that's all that's really played competitively here in the UK. Don't get me wrong, I do enjoy the game but I wish that there would be more opportunities to play some other formats here (that said, there are a few more 10 ball competitions creeping in).

If I'm playing by myself then I always rack straight pool, mainly for the strategy element and the great deal of patience it teaches you.

I'm yet to try my hand properly at one pocket, but I have a few friends interested in it as well so that should be quite interesting haha.

If I had a choice in rotation then I would probably pick 10 ball, just because the break can be a little less predictable and calling shots is always nice.

8 Ball is my favorite, has been for almost 30 years...but, I've recently started to fall in love with Straight Rotation (the game the filipinos play--although it started here in the U.S.). What a game! My grandpa taught me this game when I was in grade school, it's all he would ever play me...it will really tighten your overall game up.

I enjoy both straight pool and 1 pocket in just about equal doses.

I beg to differ with those who chose 9 or 10 ball because it teaches cue ball control. It may teach you the rails and multi cushion position, but they are the opposite of teaching cue ball control when compared to 14.1 and 1pkt.

I know many very good players who don't like 14.1 Why? They say it's too slow, it requires too much time in your seat ...... Why do I think they really don't like it?

Because it's too humbling a game and they can't stand not being able to step up and run 50's all the time. It shows them they are mere mortals. :)

Favorite Game

Hello,
I would like to give my personal opinion. 8 ball is my favorite. As the rules are very plain and simple. I have started my pool carreer with this game so it will always be my favorite.

14.1

It's the perfect combination of offense and defense. It is to pool what bridge is to cards.

Pretty much an even split between 8 & 9 ball.

10 ball isn't played here at all, nor 1 pocket. I would have to explain these games to the players here, and I'm a relative newbie to pool.

I just started learning 14.1, and like it a lot. I doubt it will become my favorite anytime soon, but I like mixing up what we play some, and it certainly is humbling. (But fun!)

Absolutely love one pocket hands down. Yes the game requires you to make balls, but most of the time the best shots are those that are strategy based and no balls are pocketed. It's pretty much the chess of billiards. The satisfaction you receive after you make a great defensive shot and you have your opponent scratching their head is truly awesome. Especially when a simple shot that looks like nothing to a spectator is really the deciding shot of the whole rack.

I'm in the process of setting up a one hole tourney at Branford Cue & Brew in Branford, CT. I'll post later with more details!!

Meaning just what the questions ask you! Which is your favorite game to play in pool, 8 ball, 9 ball, 10 ball, 1 Pocket, or 14-1? If you like all of them there is still one that you like the best! I appreciate your input. Thank you.
Many Regards,
Lock N Load.

They are all beautiful games when played at a high level, Lock.
The only games that I DON'T like are 7-ball, golf on a snooker or pool table,
and call-shot 10-ball, with or without the 'option.:angry:

This is the perfect answer to the OP. Welcome aboard Alice! Continued success in your journey with pool,especially your Eight Ball Game.:thumbup:

I like pool; all of them are pool games therefore I like them. I like snooker and billiards to but I suck more at them than I suck at pool and it is harder to find a table. Therefore I like pool games more. There is not one that I “like better”.

There is no game that is “harder” than any other. There are games where the runout % is lower but that does not mean that it is harder; personally I make the distinction. You can learn a lot from watching any game played at a very high level the less you know about that particular game the more you can learn.

14.1 is “the games best teacher” and will always be; that doesn’t mean I like 9 or 10 ball “less”. All of the different games teach you and allow you to practice something different if you do “prefer” one game over another you will sacrifice something about your game somewhere. This is just MHO. I don’t care what game you rack up, I will try to rise to the particular challenge of that game WHATEVER it is.

So what would you really NEED to be able to play well to REALLY learn how to play pool? I would say 14.1, 1-pocket and any 1 of the many sequential games out there i.e. 9ball or 10ball. I am not saying there is anything WRONG with being a specialized player or that one cannot become a very fine player by doing so. I am saying that one cannot become as good as their natural ability will allow given the time and resources they have to devote to it unless they diversify.

8-ball, but there are so many variations of rules depending on who and where u play. I prefer call pocket, choice on break, ball in hand on scratch or fouls.

starights great too.

Prefer 10 ball to 9 ball, and can't wait till someone develops a racking method to make 11 ball the next pool craze.

Also enjoy getting a group of friends together and playing Killer, not sure if everyone calls it killer. But it's where everyone picks a number out of a hat, and shoots in that order, three misses and u r out. Last man standing takes home the pot.

1=straight pool
2=9 ball
2=10 ball
3=8 ball
9 and 10 ball are a tie for me.
one pocket= I hate to play and watch it. I just think defensive games are boring.
