Just got a call from JoeyA. It's standing room only for the 128 man barbox tourney in Lafayette. Supposedly 40 guys showed up who couldn't get in the event.

Lots of names: Nick Vita, Gary Abood, Hennessee, David G., Luc Dupierne, Jesse Bowman, etc. Jamie Farrell didn't get his entry fee up there in time. Evidently Schmidt and Townsend are over at the event in Atlanta.

The first blind bid went for 1800, but then Bowman went for 2000. The top players will sell for 4 figures.

Races to 7 on barboxes-- a lot of guys have a shot. Some of the better players could run out a set.

Should be a lot of action this evening.

The auction isn't over yet and there is a little over 18000 in it already.......whooohooo

Right on, Blaine. I heard the first Calcutta went to almost $30K. Joey said the winner gets 38% of the Calcutta! Presumably the second one will be tomorrow. There is $6400 in the tournament by itself.

I heard that Chris Miller has done a phenomenal job as auctioneer. He must have, in order to get 30K out of those assorted snarly-toothed bangers, thieves, hustlers.:D

I imagine that Hennessee or Bowman will snap off some nice cheese. For that kind of sand, I'm surprised more name players didn't attend. What can they make in Atlanta with only 33 entrants?

Apparently at 7:30 they're not even through the first round yet. 128 players on 11 Valley barboxes.

Right you are, GS1! I'm not at the tournament. Joey calls me with updates. With 128 players on 11 Valley barboxes, I'd rather have a cavity filled at the dentist... I'm more interested in whether anyone matched up in 1P on the big track.

I couldn't make it but I spoke to someone about that & they said only action really was Mike Black & Joey Grey were playing some 1ball 1 pocket & Henny ,fishhook & Mobile Will were playing a mini ring game...don't know who won at either tho.

talked to JoeyA this morning

Joey is still in it but got moved over to the one loss side in a match at 4:30 this morning if I understood correctly. The front door had to be locked at 2:30 but the matches went on. A tough field and a full one with people being turned away. That is super!

Joey is most impressed with White Diamond's. Plenty of nine foot Brunswicks and he said that the people that came a long ways and failed to get into the tournament are keeping the action hopping. The place is very clean, most noticeably the food area which sounds like it is so busy it looks like a three ring circus. The food is good and cheap. A meal is $6 and water $1, after the casino Joey is in heaven.

So many strong players I don't think there is any clear-cut cream rising to the top yet. A couple of New Orleans guys still in the hunt on the A side though. They are using the mud ball so I do expect the short track specialists to rise to the top. The differences in how the cue ball and object ball react to hitting each other usually gets to the big track players after they get tired and a little less alert.

Sounds like a super event in all respects. Hopefully I'll watch one at White Diamond's soon. I have to admit that I'm not going to even attempt the round the clock pool for a few days with little rest. Too lazy to tackle that grind these days but I might help out some of the poor lost sheep roaming around looking for action.

two different balls actually

What is a "mud ball"?

Some bar tables with coin slots use an oversized cue ball to sort it out and have it return to where it is accessible after a scratch while capturing all of the numbered balls. This is the one most commonly called a mud ball. Some of the bar tables use a magnet to accomplish the same purpose and they have a large slug of metal in the cue ball making it heavier than the other balls. This too is often called a mud ball. To make the issue worse with this ball the slug often makes the cue ball roll less than true.

There is a newer version of the magnetic ball which has a layer of foil just under the skin of the ball I understand. This is supposed to be quite an improvement over the slugged ball but I can't say.

Hu...One of my best friends lives in Lafayette, and we've played many times at Chris's room. The food is very good, and very reasonable. One thing, though...the AC could be colder. I've been in there with just a few people, and it was still muggy. I can't imagine 128 + spectators! Probably like a sauna in there!

Scott,

It is over eighty degrees here where I am at and very muggy. No doubt as bad or worse in Lafayette. When that many people are in a pool room down here the AC needs to be several times the recommended size to keep up. Excessive heat and wet tables are almost the rule in south Louisiana. I suspect that is one more thing wearing on the players. The winner will be not only the best player but the winner of an ironman competition too. Those conditions are draining and then add long hours and little sleep, brutal! The race may go not to the swift but to the one that paces themselves best.

Just talked to my lil buddy Gary A

He said they were about to start the 2nd calcutta with the final 32 players left..he said not too much action cuz there aren't many tables open...said it was packed with standing room only...he's 3 deep on the winners side & went for $2000 in first calcutta...he wasn't picked in the blinds...they had 3 or 4 blinds..but was number 93 on players list & sells for $200 more than the 1st n 2nd blinds which were henny & Jessie B n sold for $1800 a piece...CRAZY !!!!!

Your answer has me confused:confused:

Mud ball is heavy, Oversize ball is larger.

Are they using an oversized ball or the mud ball?

White diamonds is a great place. Hillbilly had a big pay day there last year. The times I have been in there the AC was okay. Tournaments there have had the best calcuttas I have heard of in the last 5 years anywhere.

I don't know

They are using the Aramith "mudball" according to a report I got. Since people tend to lump all of the vending machine cue balls into that same classification "mudball" I don't know which is being used. The bigger ball is heavier also so both balls play quite a bit differently than cue balls of the same size and weight as the object balls and differently than each other too.

Sorry to be confusing but around here anytime they don't open the sides of the tables up and play with a standard size and weight cue ball people just say they are playing with the mudball. I can't assume either is being used and I don't know which one(s) Aramith makes. I rarely play barbox and usually play with the side open and a red circle when I do.

Don't know for sure about the balls at that event, but in that area (so La. and so Tx) they tend to use the Dynamo ball (a red DOT - not circle) which is a bit heavier.

Down in N.O. for years they used the mudball (solid, heavier ball - but same size) - doesn't play at all like the light Valley balls (plugged or unplugged)....tends to take a bit of the big draw out of the game....

Then theres the "grapefruit" ball (also used in NO).... it is considerably larger in size than any of the others. If memory serves me correctly, two players who could specialize with the grapefruit ball were Buster Merchant and Reed Pierce. Buster could jump that grapefruit ball like no one else I've seen....

I played at Miller's place for years- it is a heavy ball, but not oversized.
