In recent play in So. Cal.:
Jose Parica
Ernesto Dominguez
Morro Paez
Dave Hemma
Marshall Jung

Marshall's not top five. Dave's close. There's also Max Eberle and Kim Davenport. Then there's Efren whenever he's in the states.

Rapheal Martinez
Amar Kang
Morro
Max Eberle (sp?)
Ernesto

Of course there are about 20-30 that can win any given race
playing nineball that are not in these 5.
Others not on Burts list that are in the south are
Dave Hemmah
Lori ( not sure on last name)
Marshall Jung
Arturo ( not sure on last name)
King Kong

Like Burt said though it is a big state that is divided. Its a true north and
south split. Someone should put together a north vs south
shootout event. Maybe 5-8 man teams and play different games. It could
be rotated every year from Hardtimes in Sac and the one in Bellflower.
Part of it for charity and have each team have to get their own sponsors.
Have it in conjuction with a JP tour event or a few days before or after.

Lots of good players in the state

It's Lori DeLeon, and that's a player I forgot. He's a great player when he's on, and very strong anyway. Max has the hardest time with that guy--took a number of tries before he finally beat Lori in a tournament.

Rafael I believe is no longer with us, may he RIP.

Arturo Rivera's a very good player, but slow as the dickens. Dave's close to top five maybe, but I'd put him just below that. Marshall's below that.

Ernesto's son Oscar's a good player too.

There are better one pocket players in Northern California. You may have Jose down there who will beat anyone up here. But there are a lot more one pocket players up here, that was the first thing I noticed when I started playing up here.
BTW is Cecil Tugwell still around?

Yes, Cecil is still around.

Hi, JDB. This is JAM here posting while I'm in "moderation queue." :)

I wanted to add these photos to this thread about great players in Maryland. Don't have any digital photos, but I took a group shot with my digital camera. From left to right, Mike Sigel winning the '86 Maryland State 9-Ball Championship, Cigar Tom Vanover placing second, Teddy Bear Wilson coming in third, and I cannot leave out Michael "Geese" Gerace, photo taken with a younger JAM, 18 years ago!

JAM

thats a great photo of Geese and yourself. I never knew geese till years after that was likely taken. I met Geese upon my return home from college. I went to Frederick for a tournament he drew Geese first round. My buddy Matt knew him already and introduced us later in the day after he crushed me. We were always friendly from then on. Watched him play Carl Jones in Frederick years back. I believe Carl played him 8-5 but Geese played with one hand and Carl with both. They played that way two consectutive Saturday and Geese was phenominal (and Carl is a pretty fine player himself). Best one-handed one pocket player I have ever seen. I was sorry to hear we lost ole Geese last Winter. He sure brought a lot of laughs into any room.

Yes, unfortunately, age and poor lifestyle have taken there toll on Cecil. He is only a shadow of what he used to be.

Geese (Michael Gerace) will always be in my heart. I have known him since I was a teenager, and it was Geese who introduced me to the pool room culture. I had always been a bar-box shooter before I met him. He is, without a doubt, the BEST one-handed player I have ever seen in my lifetime. With his cue stick jacked up, never touching a rail, he could draw his rock the length of the table and more.

Some other Maryland players to add to the list, though some may have been native Washingtonians originally, would be: Strawberry, Bus Driver Ronnie, Bobby Hawk, Korean Lee, Jackie Robinson, and Left-Handed Kevin.

Baltimore used to be the hub for pool action when Jack and Jill's in Glen Burnie used to be the old "Bill and Billie's." Gotta throw Cigar Tom Vanover from Dundalk in the mix, and then there's White Max, Greenie, Teddy Williams, Tom-Tom Wirth, and Fat Mike, just to name a few! :p

I like that Brandon Shuff a lot! The kid's got heart and isn't afraid to step up to the plate:)

He recently finished third in the Virginia 9-Ball State Championship, and also cashed in the Masters tournament held in Norfolk the very next week.

Brandon is a really good kid, even if he doesn't return phone calls! :D

Wow KN i haven't seen that name in years. Is he still around the Frederick area? Was a pretty good one pocket player when he was playing. Is he still playing? Top 5 that may be pushing it although ive seen him win his share of $$$$ 6 or 7 years ago in Baltimore. Timmy Crown was another pretty good one hole player that I havent seen his name in awhile either

Mark Wilson/ Little Pat

There are a few one pocket specialists that would be on this list if one were asking about one-pocket only, like Danny Hill. Also, if Little Ricky Van Ume would ever show up he would jump to the top of the list.

kollegedave

Let me correct this list: and this is people that actually live in Missouri (Marc Wilson, Joe Woolford live in Illinois. Gary Lutman (not Larry) also lives in Illinois but if he lived in Missouri, wouldn't make the top 15. No offense.

1. Danny Harriman (living back in Springfield)
2. Andy Quinn
3-5 are all close with Chuck Raulston, Darren Everett, and Steve Hassell making the list in no particular order.
Honorable mention to Randy Enlow, Rich Seger, Jerry Terbrock. Old (not really old, but just not around the tournaments or action anymore) timers that if they WOULD PLAY that would be on the top or near the top of the list include Larry Hubbard and Rusty Brandemeier.

My good friend Ricky Van Umm is too busy ruining his life smoking crack and if back in Missouri no one knows it. Sad, but true and he would self admit it so I don't have a problem saying it. If anyone runs into him, tell him to give me a call.

By the way , all 5 are drug free and great role models.

My alternates are:

Steve McAnnich
Howard Vickery
Liel Gay
Chris Bartrum
Jason Miller
That's 2 very strong teams for just about any game someone would want to play. Have had the pleasure of playing against all of them in tournaments except you and Howard. Someday that may happen too.
