Who is the hardest breaker you have seen in person?
For me,without a doubt,it was Jon Kucharo back in the mid 90's.I never seen or heard anything like that! The funny thing is,he broke harder from the box than the rail.
I have heard that Jamie Baraks breaks them harder, but truthfully, I have never witnessed him break.

I have never seen anybody break the balls with the power that the late Tony Ellin possessed. His break was amazing.

Honorable mention: Jeff Deluna - Francisco Bustamante - Johnny Archer

I actually think, pound for pound, that Tony had the best all around break. The combination of power and control was tough to copy.He was amazing!

Charlie "Hillbilly" Bryant and Larry Nevel.
I didn't know Hillbilly broke em that hard?? Then again,I haven't seen him play but once, and that was in the Glass City Open against Basavich.

Vote for Danny Harriman
Danny's followthrough is something else.It looks like he is going to kick the back of his head with his right heel.Looks like he's dancing in an opera when he breaks. He does smash them though,I'll give you that:)

I think Larry Nevel or Bustamante have two of the most powerful breaks. In this match vs. John Schmidt he just CRUSHES the rack.

Yes, he really does. And John hits awfully hard too. But as the first several racks point out (I didn't watch the entire match) there is a point of diminishing returns on such crushing breaks.

Both of them were losing the CB and for the first several racks at least, the break wasn't much of an advantage.

Thanks for the video! I'll watch the rest later.

Regards,
Jim

When Charlie Bryant lets go of one it is impressive. But as stated above it really doesnt matter how hard you hit them. It is how well you squat the rock.

A guy named Mike Mitchell breaks the balls REAL REAL solid, out of central California..............Marc

I was watching a video of Bustamante on youtube a few weeks back, and the commentator claimed bustamante had the most powerful break, the cue ball was supposedly clocked at 43 mph. This is also stated on wikipedia if you look bustamante up... how credible that claim is, I don't know... but i wouldn't want to be hit by cue ball moving 43 mph!!! As I stated in a previous thread, my goal is to get Bustamante to sign the cue ball thats shown in my avatar... just so I when people ask what happened to the cue ball, I can say that Bustamante does have one hell of a break! (In reality, I have no clue what happened to the poor cue ball, I pool table was given to me and a set of balls were included.... and the cue ball was in this condition - I imagine it was caused by too much alcohol, and fire :) )

Then theres the quote by Ray Booth about John 'Cannonball' Chapman "when it is time for me to go, just lay me on a pool table with my head on the foot spot and let Cannonball fire that cue ball at me." However, I never had the pleasure of seeing him break in person as I have Bustamante.

Jamie Baraks is a great player, but when I played him a few years ago, he didn't break abnormally hard. Athough his break was very effective

Nevel has a huge break. I would think he would be high on the list

Ok... I take back my last statement. I just realized the Search feature is down. So please disregard my last smartass comment! :D

Also, to contribute to the thread, Drew, a forum member on this board, has said that he can break the balls 40mph and that's about 80% for him. So he is basically saying he can break 50mph. If the search function were working I would post the thread it was mentioned. How strong is that?

Since many of the players have gone to the soft break it seems that even when breaking hard they don't hit it like in the past. The other thing is that at tournaments most of the time it's played on new cloth so solid contact and cue ball control are more important.

That said, and being from upstate NY, my vote goes to Dennis Hatch, Mike Sigel and a Danny Basavich. Basavich came through our area in the late 90's and people were in awe of his break. More than a few times the cue ball went straight up after hitting the one ball. He came close to breaking the lights.
