What sjm said. Majors carry the most individual weight (albeit not the end all). They pit u against the best of that time on a level field. Yeah, you need to filter thru the caliber of the eras to subjectively compare "6 majors in the 70's vs 4 in the 90's", but it's as good as you're gonna get.
Koolkat, I'm off work today. Come down and let's hit'em.

I'd say SVB has the best plan. Take on all comers an sooner than later he will beat them all. With proper rest he is the best player at present imho. I love to watch this guy play.....................

i like svb and his game.
im not sure that you know he wont play alex anymore.

The player with the best mix.....tourney wins, wins in big money games, the one who never misses.....all this builds the individual popularity, to an extent.....I think they also have to be strong in all games.....the one that can pick up a cue, compete in any game, whether tourney or gambling, and regardless, seems like they will never miss.....that's the ticket....

I don't think that just winning tournaments qualifies someone as "Best Ever", ie. Sigel. Back when he won all his tournaments, there were only a handful of solid players he has to contend with, and in tournament format, he may only play one or two other good players the whole tourney. I am not discrediting him, but Sigel lives close to me and I listen to him all the time proclaim to be the "Best in the Universe" forever..... uggg, gag.... Yeah, he could beat 3 other guys back when no one else was playing.

I have to disagree with you that Sigel (he may have an ego the size of NY, but he was the best from that time period) only had to beat a few players. I have a boxes and boxes full of Accu-stats tapes in the basement with great tournament players from that time:
Hopkins
Howard
Breedlove
Varner
Hall
Strickland
Parica
Reyes (He still couldn't break & was coming up at the time as Cesar Moralez. IMO, he hit gear about the time Mike stopped playing).

Rempe
Paez
Reid
Vickery
Hatch
Fusco
Incardona
Carter
Miz
Crane
Davenport
This is just naming a few that came to the top of my head.

marathon gambling sessions speak a lot to endurance and one's health, I'll play the world's best 85 year old 25 ahead and win at some point

Earl, Sigel, and Efren are the best imo winning their titles against top fields over many years, I could be convinced to throw the Miz in that group also

If a newer gen player equals their titles, I will call that player the best as depth of talent is now enormous and top tier

I think SVB and Wu are the guys to watch

... since we have different goals I thought opinions of what makes the best might be different and cool to discuss, for me as long as people are having fun playing pool then they win in my mind.

I couldn't vote for any particular one. Each different goal yields a different (not necessarily better) result to me:

Most tournaments = best consistant pressure player
Most popular = best showman
Least misses = best shotmaker
Most $$$ = best hustler

P.S.: I totally agree that as long as you're having fun playing pool you come away a winner every time.

Efren Reyes is the best player of all time and it isn't even close. He had more shots than the other players and is the only top player to behave with class and style at all the times. He probably has won the most money as well. Mike Sigel is still in the top 50 players in the world, not 5000. Let him play for 3 weeks and see what happens...The smartest players in the game: Reyes, Strickland, Busty, Soquet, Hall, Sigel, Varner and Parica. I haven't watched SVB play much and look forward to it.

It's a fair point to note that when Sigel was still competing the fields were smaller, with fewer big guns at the top to have to beat, and the game was not as international as it is now.

Having said that, however, I don't think you are giving Sigel his due. Here are some of the regulars that Sigel did play, and beat:

Reyes, Strickland, Hall, Parica, Archer, Varner, Hopkins, Rempe, Mizerak.

In particular, at the time they were competing, Sigel was more successful at winning tournaments, and winning big tournaments, than all of these guys, with the possible exceptions of Strickland and Hall, who may have been his equal, or at least close to it. But no one surpassed Sigel. Reyes, in particular, was certainly not Sigel's equal at winning tournaments (nor Strickland's for that matter).

I think the 'sooner' period is over between SVB and Pagulayan at this point, and IIRC Pagulayan is ahead.

Pool has always been about the cash. Be it tourney cash or match up cash. Winner is always the one with the most cash. For 200 bucks ppl dont care as much about Shane vs. Efren, for 40k the internet and forums go off. It's a dough game.

i was thinking about this general talking while reading the "keith" thread. i mean, you can play the best pool anybody's ever seen, but if you dont have any money what good is it? what if tiger shot a 54 after 17 holes in a winner take all 20 million dollar tournament and shot a 15 on the last hole. i mean yeah he played the best golf ever for 17 holes but what it boils down to is that it meant nothing in the end. the guy who gets the most money is the best because he.....

a) played the best when it counted and/or
b) knew more than his opponents when it came to matching up
