jay Helfert loaned me a old ESPN video of Earl playing C.J. in Burbank from along time ago, Sigel was a commentator, winner plays Archer, they show both matches-winner breaks, long sets, good camera work, Earl clapped when C.J. runs out on him(long time ago), point is what the hell happened to ESPN? They had it right back then, i'm not living in the past but after watching that POS race to 7 alternating breaks with 2 world beaters, the other day it made me wonder what hasppened to ESPN? they wernt brain dead back then, even the camera men knew how to shoot this match then too, and the winner was getting a good payday 16dimes? i cant remember, but it was a good TV production. Not the $hit they have now-bad camera men, stupid formats etc.

oh i just heard them say it was a race to 13 then they dropped it to 9 for TV, thats ok. but 7 alternating breaks sucks. i'll edit the post when i hear what they were playing for

Its a new market and demographics are better. Sorry if its not up to your standards. But seeing as I like the way it is and have seen some of the older videos of Mosconi. Current productions keep my attention a lot better.

Yeah its really bad now. I can't even watch it. What I really can't stand is the way the make the crowd cheer after each ball is pocketed during a 9-ball match.

marketing and demographics are my business-seriously. I know things change over time-as they should, but I promis you if we were sitting here watching this together we wouldnt disagree on what i'm *****ing about.

What's especially irritating is when they clap when the OB is pocketed, and the cueball rolls behind another ball hooking the shooter, and they keep clapping!

I can't watch it anymore either. I can't stand any of this wannabe pool jargon:

* he is getting set for the breakoff
* 9-ball deposited!
* jackhole: "He has a very simple shot to deposit the 2-ball." pro: "Actually its a very difficult shot since he's jacked up over the 5-ball and has to draw the cueball all the way uptable." jackhole: "Oh."
* He's going to float this one in and then float in the next one, then float in some more, and hopefully finish with depositing the 9-ball.

I guess they needed more commercial time nowdays over what they needed when just beginning to make the dollar, the worst part is they edit out the safety battles completly so they can show the simple runouts. How am I supposed to learn the safety game if they cut it out?

Leonard

there are less commercials, true most have been edited out, but adding in the editted ones and the ones left in there are still less

earl is giving a nice interview about how good cj played and how he is lookig foward to playing Archer, he is acting like a gentalman.

Barry Tompkins in involved, dosent he do some poker on TV?

first place plays $21000 this video has to be 91-92, thats like 35,000 now.

I produced this event in April, 1992. Total prize money was 160K, 110K for the men and 50K for the women. Over 50K in added money.

Men's top prizes were 1. $21,000 2. $11,000 3. $6,000
Women 1. $10,000 2. $6,000

Then along came Don Mackey, and had the players boycott my next big tourney in L.A. That was in 1993 and it was an All Around with three divisions. We paid out another 140K. Mark Tadd won $26,000.

Many of the players I grew up with sided with Mackey and boycotted my tournament in 1993. There was no loyalty for someone who had been their advocate for years. Kind of made me lose interest in trying to help them. Wonder why? I don't have to name any names. They know who they are. Where is Don Mackey today? What has he done for Pool and the pool players?

And that is another reason why the men have been playing for spit all these years. They bit the hand that fed them.

not even my kids will watch that and they do normally watch ANYTHING but do their homework. they love to play tho.

Just kidding

Would that be the LA Open? I have a milk crate full of old VHS tapes and I think I have both of these matches. Earl edges out Archer in the finals if I remember right. I remember these matches because they were really good and I watched them quite a few times. I guess it's time to dust off the VCR and compare the old matches to the new.

it was right after that is when the mens division went down hill hard, i stopped playing in publiuc rooms and ignored pool in mid 94 until 6 months ago,

IF THE PLAYERS WOULD PLAY, AND THE PROMOTERS WOULD PROMOTE. Poll might have a chance too many bosses nad not enough workers-or what everthe saying is, would help pool alot, KT had a plan it didnt work-and that was terrible. But if someone honerable could implement a plan and the players would just do what they do best PLAY like we cant, and the PROMOTER was respected like Scott the Shot, POOL WOULD do better, than this dumb ass race to 7, god i hope they split the $$$, there is alot of young guys that can play, With them winning $30K for first place it would stimulate action and desire with the shortstops to play better, all the pieces of the puzzle are there its just a mess, it must be organized with logic not greed or egos, the only people alloud to be greedy are the players and stake horses-thats why they are there, I make alot of $$$ in my gig I have almost 1000 employees-I'm not greedy, I know deep down in that it will come to me as long as I keep a cool head and not ego trip-nobody likes that. Same with promoters-put the players first.

Jay,
This is when everybody was "threatened" not to play in your event, or any other non PBT sanctioned event. There have been some people that were behind these threats that have claimed that they never took place, but somewhere I still have the proof sitting in the original envelope.

All of this occurred back when Mackey and Meucci teamed together for "World Team Billiards" and cut the schedule for that year in order to fund that project as well as the Worldwide Collectible card set - both of those messes bombed miserably. They deny that these 'threats" and failures ever took place because they would have to admit that they were making these decisions in their own best interests, not the best interests of the players, a fact that is now obvious to those of us that had to make a living through all of that nonsense.

pretty much the problem in a nutshell

Jay,

Almost all players always think "me first" and in the short term. I can understand the thinking since most are scratching like hell to make a living right now, literally how do I eat and pay bills. However we will have a hard time ever building a sport with this today is what is important and the hell with tomorrow attitude.

If I were at one of those ESPN events, I would refuse to clap after those shots. I think if I were a player I'd be embarrassed by it.
