Who was the best pool player you ever played in your pool career?

The best player I have ever played against was Phil Burford in a one day event in Nottingham when he was 17. I managed to win a group game 7-6, but it's absolutely right to say he was not even bothered lol. I've also played Mick Hill, who battered me for £50 9-2. Frustratingly, I missed 3 8-balls (albeit tricky) in the match. (The match against Mick was world rules uk 8 ball)

Phil Buford does play pool good. He came to the worlds pool hall, Buffalo Billiards, in Metairie/New Orleans, Louisiana last year. His game was right on top!

Probably Rob Saez. He came into a DC pool hall looking for Ilir (local short stop), who didn't show up. At the time, I didn't know who he was, but I figured I was outmatched since he was specifically looking for Ilir. So I took a stab at $40 1-pocket.

He slow played it, locking me up more than he had to and running out less than he could have. Overall, a nice guy and fun to shoot against. Best of all, he safed me so much that I got to shoot and make a Grady special: long rail bank, sending the CB over a mess of balls for shape.

It was something like this, where I banked the 2 into my hole (top left) and went over the cluster and get shape on the other side (general idea only, I'm sure there are smarter shots from this particular rough sketch):

... I still lost the game.

best i played

the best player I ever played against would have to be Don Willis, don't remember the exact year but if my old memory serves me correct it was late 50's early 60's in St. Louis... I thought I had the nuts...

didn't turn out exactly as I had planned.

this got me to thinking about those days, don was a very nice guy even when he was busting you... I asked him after we were done playing if he ever missed a ball, and he just looked at me and smiled... and said something along the lines of "nope, the power company doesn't care that you hung the 9 ball, they want their money"

Mike Dechaine, Marty Herman, Mark Ransom, Tom D'Alfonso.
There was also an old guy, Earl, from the Boston area who some said in his younger days may have played stronger than Boston Shorty. I forget his last name and he had the shakes something awful...until he delivered that final stroke. Then everything smoothed out nicely. He was a nice guy to boot.

Jim rempe & johnnyarcher both in tournaments & keith mccready i played him for the money and believe me he was a nightmare to play

played weekly handicap 9-Ball

Grady Mathews played weekly handicap 9-Ball back in the 1980's at Opening Break in Columbia SC. We played many times during the weekly 9-ball competition and on saturdays when we just played to practice... Good man, ole Grady..

Thousands of hours (literally) with Thorsten

The same with Ginky.
Hundreds of hours with George Mikula
Played some with
Mika, Schmidt, Archer, Hatch, marlon Manolo, Mike Sigel, Jeannette Lee, jasmin, lipsky, barouty, ervolino, flacco Rodriguez, SJM, charlie Wiliams, Ralph Eckert, jennifer berreta and many more (I think)
Never had the pleasure to play Efren.

Never won one game/set off any of them, even, (except twice- beat flacco in banks, once and beat SJM once, match to 100 in 3 innings.

Best I ever played was Willie Mosconi for Straight Pool. I did not earn the game, it was the 1960's my late dad opened a Pool Hall with all new Gold Crowns, Mosconi HAD to give exhibitions for Brunswick.

Best all around was White Cannonball from UpState NY. He defined Hustler.

I've taken a couple lessons with some great players! The 3 most notable in this order would be Joe Tucker, ginky, and Tom D'Alfonso! I used to play cheap sets with tom alot! And out of everybody that I've seen, I've always been impressed with his cue ball control! I've seen him get it there so many times!

billy "cornbread red" burge

what a delight to get to shoot (mostly watch) with red. all the adjectives fit. wish i had taken notes on his stories. miss him a lot.

Buddy Hall.
About 15 years ago he played in 3/4 nightly tourneys a week for $10/$15 entry fees. Like races to 4/4.

Planet 9 ball on Monday nights in Oldsmar,Fl.
Strokers on Wednesday nights in Palm Harbour,Fl.
Prime Time Billiards on Thursday nights in Dunedin, Fl.
Fatsos on Sunday nights in Tampa,Fl.

All of these events in the greater Tampa Bay/St.Pete/Clearwater area.

These were great nightly events, with the likes of Donny Mills, Benny Conway, Trevor Braymore, John Foster from time to time, Tony Crosby, Richard Broumpton, Richy Richeson and a slew of other solid players always around and playing these nightlys also.

Forgot to add KENTUCKY JIM.

ive been lucky enough to play some really good players.... cliff joyner, varner, daulton, rafael martinez, tough tony, tony ellin, larry nevel, harriman, jeremy jones, etc....
but by far, the best, and most enjoyable, was keith mckready.
keith and i played at the lexington all-stars tourney, in a one pocket event. i played my heart out. racing to 3, i managed to win 2 games, but lost 3-2. it was an awesome learning experience, and i gotta say.... i have seen keith in some crazy action situations.... but the time we played, he was as nice and respectful a guy as i have ever seen. ever.
he complimented me on my play, and me, being a kid at the time, i was on top of the world!
all id heard til that time was horror stories lol. but after actually meeting and playing with him, i saw him in a different light. great player, and a nice guy.
respect.
