Sorry Guys!
I know last night I said I would be posting rack by rack updates of the Alex and Shane matchup, but had a couple of things happen that I wasn't planning on. (iPhone that I was using to post ran out of juice being primary, the other that Shannon wanted to talk to me about something and we got sidetracked) ANYWAYS...
Alex and Shane started play at 11:15pm, playing 10 ball, 10 ahead for 10 dimes. I was able to see the first 3 racks and it started out bad for Shane. He scratched on the opening break, and Alex runs out. Nothing significant happened the next 2 that I saw, they just traded racks, so Alex was up 1 when I left to talk to Shannon. When I came back at about 12:30, Alex was up 4 and in the middle of a safety battle with Shane. I was watching Alex, and he was in another world as far as concentration level. His execution, speed and thought process were near flawless. He won that rack, Shane won the next off a dry break by Alex, then, get this, Alex wins the next 6 racks to take the match down in an hour and 46 minutes. (We know it was an hour and 46 minutes, cause Sparky had 200 on Alex. When his gf found out about it, she said that if he wins she's going to be able to take it for shopping money. He agreed as long as the set finished up before 1am, thinking that there was no way in hell it would...come on? 10 ahead? Alex pocketed the last ball at 1:01. Sparky was sweating it pretty bad...lol.) I had to get on out of there right after that...but that's what happened with that.
As far as everything else, the tournament was a blast. Great pool was played all weekend, especially yesterday. As it said on the AZ front page, Larry got out from the break 11 out of 15 times. I think it was 2 4-packs and a 3...with Sparky only having two real opportunities to put anything up on the board, the first being when he won the lag and got to break first. The second one was at 6-1, and he ran out Larry's dry break and got one more back before dry breaking himself. I have to tip my hat to Sparky though, he played great leading up to the finals. At one point, he had strung together 11 straight racks between 2 sets. Pretty impressive.
I was around pretty much for everything except for the last 6 hours of the Shane/Gabe 1-hole matchup and it was awesome. Can't wait for next year, should be even better. For those of you out there, this is deffinitely a tournament you should check out. I haven't been to Louisville yet, but from what the players were saying, this was pretty much a mini Derby. So if you can't take the 2 weeks off that the Derby takes place, this only lasts 4 days and has a similar feel, supposedly, I can't speak from personal experience. There was plenty of action available, though as usual it didn't always take place, and non-stop pool. The staff at Diamond Billiard Club were great too, they really took care of the players and spectators. And Shannon and Marge run a great event and tour, I'm happy to support them. On a personal note, I was pretty happy with my results in the tournament, was only one out of the money, taking 17-24th. Ended up losing to Sparky, then Hennessee. Considering how they were shooting this weekend, I'm not too upset about that.
There were some pretty funny prop bets going on at one of the booths by the door...I believe the bet was a benjamin on who would come through the front door next, a man or woman. New season starts 2nd weekend in February, can't wait.
