Who would win a race to 7 Mosconi or Mike Sigel in there primes.
Some of you old timers can shed some light on this. Sigel in his prime smokin cigarettes during the match. Completely cocky with his disco pants on. Ill tell you what though its the most impressive and most dominating play ive seen on a table ever. Mike still has his game I believe and his legend. The IPT players were star struck as most of the young ones had never played this guy. Willie was so down to earth its hard to compare the two.. but who do you all think would win?

Mosconi thought 9-Ball was a joke, far too easy for him. And it probably was.

He probably thought it was a joke but in a race to 7, Sigel would have made him his bltch.

Maybeee....We'll never know. Mosconi in his prime was just as good a player as Mike IMO. He may not have missed a ball or position in a 9-Ball match for hours at a time. He once beat a good player named Nicky Vacchiano giving him the 5 and the break on a ten foot table. None of the hustlers ever asked Mosconi about a 9-ball game again.

I like Mike's game too, but when you bring up Mosconi you are talking about one of the most talented individuals to ever hold a cue.

Saw Masconi run a 9 ball rack from the square of the corner diamonds on a table once. Made a ball and bring the cue ball back within that square, make another ball and again make the cue ball get back in that square till he ran out. I think I would take Masconi in the match your talking about. Was the most impressive thing I have ever seen in pool.---Smitty

After an exhaustive study and considerable research I've concluded that it would be TCTC ( too close to call) however:

I'd bet high on SIGEL if they played left handed and I like MOSCONI right handed:groucho:

What about a race to 100?

As talented as Mosconi was, I would have to go with Sigel (with the admition that I never saw Mosconi in his prime).

Mosconi would be able to run balls, but he wouldn't know the safeties or strategies or the positional routes Sigel does. So if things came up tough, he would certainly be the underdog. The break would be another huge factor.

But this is assuming that in our alternate world where Wille and Mike could match up in their primes, Willie didn't devote himself to 9 ball.

I don't think that I'd worry too much about Willie's safties and kicks. Jim

Talent is right. And so is class. He had a leadership superstar aura about him that would have been psychologically daunting for any opponent. I heard stories he used to give Jackie Gleason the 6 or six out and rob him back in the 1940s, not that that's necessarily anything. But it's also my understanding that when Willie ran that 526, he didn't miss. He got tired or bored...and walked away from the table. Willie's cue ball control, like Tiger or Phelps, put him in a class by himself. He rarely got out of line with the cue ball. I think if they played many sets over time Willie would probably have prevailed. But Siegel is great too. Willie was flat amazing, even after he was old. It was a thrill to watch him play. I am lucky to have gotten to. And that cue ball...man...scary.

neither they would be playing straight pool to 200 points.x7 1400 points.. to this day I know of noone who has ever ran 1400 balls in a 24 hour period... so there would be no "race" to 7

from all accounts I have heard Willie Mosconi DETESTED 9-ball a slop ball gambling game that has more luck than any other form of pool.. and I personally agree with that.

I don't know Mike Sigel personally but I would bet my house that if he had the chance to play Mosconi...he and Willie would both insist on 14.1

here here well said.
PS willie was always trying to win. whatever the situation !

i am in my 70`s, and saw willie play several times on a 5x10. his position was magic and when he got in a zone the racks just disappeared...my high run on that table was 53 and a struggle ...he ran 150 and stopped twice this at a time when he had recovered from a stroke....quite remarkable...

hi

sigel would have won for a few months .then mosconi would have picked up the moving ,break, pushout and other little things and made it a close match.
in the beginning though i or sigel or any pro 9baller would have edged him out.
willie was right 9ball is a joke.
i won the usopen 9ball and i still say its a joke.
ive heard alot of top players today say 14.1 is easy or lame.
meanwhile its just to hard for them thats all.
they can try to run over 200 a few times in a month and come back and tell me how easy it is.lol

I agree with Schmit 14.1 is a hard game period, perhaps the hardest game on a 9' box. You are as good as your score-no excuses.
