I agree 100%. I have played with a Southwest, and I do like them, but a Scruggs feels much better to me. Of course its all subjective anyhow.

I used to think so to, until I started to use SW's Szamboti (pro-taper)...world of difference for me. I've had a hard time finding a cue that I prefer to Southwest in terms of hit and workmanship...and I've had over a 100. Others love the SW standard taper. To each his own.

The point being that taper, makes a world of difference to me. I had a $7,000 "big name" cuemakers cue awhile back and actually preferred a house cue to this "legends" cue. Go figure.

We can start with taper.
If some cue dealer tells you so and so cue hits like a SW but it has a much different taper, he's full of kaka.

What about if you put a SW shaft on another cue, will it play the same????? I just got a very nice SW shaft from a friend and I have about 6 cues it fits on, I even have a cheap KC that the ringwork almost matches perfect. I have not hit with a lot of SW's but probably 8 or 10 and for the most part they have all been pretty good. I do think there is a difference in the older ones though, as a good friend of mine has a Franklin cue and it is probably one of the top 5 cue's I have hit balls with, and that is out of well over 100 cues.

I remember you said that a while back, but I still havent had the chance to hit with a SW with that taper. Maybe I'll get lucky and find one soon:wink:

They play good also. Im not sure if he still does it but he used to get his shafts from SW, that is what is on the cue I have for sale now.

i've tried 2 ariel carmeli's. 1 played more like a mcdermott and the other played nothing like a SW.

Beside marketing your own cue, this doesn't answer OP's question since his question was "similar" to SW not "better" than a SW

I was just relating a story and as I said ... it was just his opinion.
Not trying to market any cue ... just trying to answer the question.
If the guy likes the SW style hit but likes the way mine hit better then there must be some similarity there somewhere ... ...
Hit and feel are so subject to the individual that it is almost imposable to accurately describe without referring to a known profile as a reference. As far as I know, there are no standard measurements of hit and feel.

The taper I use started with a SW profile but I found it to be a bit too stiff.
I tweaked the CNC profile program a bit until the shaft felt less stiff.
Not as loose and flexable as a Meucci but not as stiff as a SW or McDermott.

Many players are fascinated by a SW even though they have never had one in their hands. There is a long waiting list and that adds to the mystique but I don't think any cuemaker sets out to make their cues or wants their cues to be like a SW.

Take a SW butt and put a SW shaft on it and you have a cue that feels like a SW. Plain and simple.

I have a Mike Stacey - Big Pin Cue, I actually like it better and I've had a SW.

One of my students has a Stacey, which he bought after trying my Southwest. I agree Stacey cues look similar in many respects, but they don't feel/play like one at all. Nor does any other Southwest look-alike I've tried (of which there are many). Having said that, my student loves his Stacey (except that the pin came loose, and the repair seems to take forever).

play similar to a southwest. i'm just curious.

Anyones cues who use similar construction techniques, especially those who use a Parabolic Taper such as, Kersenbrock, Ed Young, Bender, Bill Webb, and many others those are just off the top of my head.

Oh and I think our very own forum member joeyincali also use a similar tapered forearm, but you would have to contact him to be sure, but from all I have read people like the way his cues play!
