Who's the most popular cue maker still making cues

I just ordered a custom Schmelke because I've seen the name mentioned on here a lot.
They quoted 3 weeks + shipping time.
They didn't ask for any money up front but I paid them in full anyway.

Diviney seems extremely popular, some world-class players shoot with them, and they're very affordable. I've only shot with one of his cues but I quite liked it.

I offer this because I am trying to help and not be a dick.

I think it is silly to order a cue right now. The price of cues on the secondary market is ridiculously low. There are cues that are listed on here for $1200-that would have sold for $2K-$2.5K a few years ago.

Best deal I have seen is cuehunter has Richard Black cue that looked awesome for $1200. IMO, it is best deal, and there is no way you can a new cue built for that kind of money.

I wish you the best,

Ken

This is the best advice for the OP....in my opinion.
Every cue I own that I won't let go of, but one, I bought used.

Go to the SBE or the DCC....and get you a cue....no waiting list.

Well the Kid spelled it wrong but has it mostly right. It's Bob Frey. But I really like his big pin wood to wood sneaky. And you don't have to wait ten years or be abused by certain rock star status cue makers that lie for years at a time about how the cue is in the mail.

Hey, just sayin'

And how long are you willing to wait for it? The "best" cues will have a long waiting list, with some makers like Southwest up around 10 years.

If you want a popular cue, got to you pool room, look what every one else is using and from that you'll find the most ''popular cue''.

Your question cannot be answered unless you are willing to wait many years for a pool cue and pay lots of money........the most popular cue-maker has a waiting list 4-5-10 years long.....Joel Hercek's wait is > 11 years.......Barry Szamboti isn't going to make your cue overnight.........Dennis Searing......you'd be lucky to even get to speak with him........Ernie Guitterez will retire before he'd get to your cue in all likelihood.......I mentiond those names because those are revered cue-makers.....highly popular.

To answer your question, spit out a budget and the type of cue you want, and the Forum will give you lots of advice and opinions..........there's a bunch of talented cue-makers out there but the most popular, those are the cue-makers you have to wait seemingly eons to have your cue made.

However, I might be misconstruing what you mean by popular? Which brand is the best selling pool cue annually or historically? If that's what you are referring to, ignore what I wrote earlier because those type cue-makers are not known to produce a high volume of pool cues annually......it's just the opposite.

$500 - $1000 ?
That changes it up some... and how long you're willing to wait.

Off the top, I'd say get you a plain four pointer from Jerry Rauenzahn... might be right at a grand and his cues are players... they hit great.

OP -
Get a McDermott. End of story.
Best cue for the money for over 4 decades. Name another cue maker, custom or not that can come within a decade of that record.

McDermott... cheap, good, made in the USA and you can get as many as you want right now.

Well, since you asked. Schmelke has been doing the same thing for 35 years :grin-square:

Agreed on this. Jerry -R- makes a fantastic playing cue, and is very easy to work with.

Try a Woodworth.... Fantastic workmanship with excellent materials. If you like a nice stiff hit, you should give these a serious look. He will build one for you, but he also has an inventory of cues on hand.

I play with one I got last year and absolutely love it.

I guess I didn't word it right. Not so much the best but I guess in the highest demand someone known for making the best playing cue. Not for collection but shooting a players cue 500-1000 dollar range.

If I had 500 to a 1000 to spend on a cue, then I would get a Pat Diveney. In my mind, you will not find a better hitting cue. Or a really great lesser known cue maker I would recommend is, Mike Durbin. He makes a super nice hitting cue. Good luck.

I've been very very happy with a Rat cue I had Ryan custom build for me. One of the best hitting cues I've owned in the last 25 years.

Gilbert, his cues are perfect players. Never seen a bad one.

I've got an extra one in your price range if you're interested.
