Why are we so obsessive?

I love sports of all kinds. I spend a lot of time talking sports with other fans. Some things I never hear in those conversations:
Brady is a great QB. What brand of shoes does he wear?
Babe Ruth was the greatest natural hitter of all time. What brand of bat did he use?
Do the Williams sisters use Wilson or Spaulding rackets?

Why are we so obsessive over what kind of cue, or what kind of tip a certain pro uses?

Is it really important to our personal improvement?

I'm serious. I really wonder why this topic comes up so much when talking about pool, but almost never when discussing other sports.

Golfers always know, and there's a good reason for that: in golf, the equipment makes a huge difference. Of course playing with Tiger's irons won't make you play like Tiger, but especially for those of us inconsistent golfers, playing with good irons will make you play much better than playing with bad irons.

Whereas with cues, there's no good reason. I don't care who plays with what custom cue, and I don't believe any of them intrinsically play any better than the rest. The action of the CB depends on the stroke, not the cue. Squirt does matter, but any cue can have the "perfect" amount of squirt if it happens to have the exact amount of squirt you're used to compensating for.

Watching too much of Monk will turn you to obsessive compulsive behaviour.
Top sports people use what is best for them, untill they pick up sponserships and endorsements.
Quite a lot of top sports people are also used to help develope and improve the sponsers product as well.
Michael Schumacher did not win all his world championships just because he was a good driver. One set of bad tires or a wrong tire choice for the track has been the cause of the team loosing or not finishing a race.
Pool equipment is in the same situation. A really good cue and a bad tip is worse than a house stick with a really good tip.Cue tips are like car tires, they are the item that gives us control.
Obsessive people are good for the sports industry. They are the reason for sales and Marketing people, product development . Without that base, there would not be the large number of people buying X brand of shoes or Golf clubs or what ever the product.
There is now more high end equipment available to the average person than ever before.

It's just an internet forum thing , doesn't happen in the real world. ;)

My son-in-law and I have an ongoing competion about golf clubs. I found a three wood at Salvation Army for $3.00. He found a one wood for $2.00. Currently he is winning the best and cheapest golf club contest. Now if I only look with more intensity, I can beat him out.

Some things in life are important you know.

I've got a "putter" that ain't worth a dime :wink::grin::grin::grin:

I've got a cheap homemade putter.

I re-milled a pawn shop Odyssee 2 ball putter , refinshed it in the gee rodge and replaced all of the inserts using left over scraps of Ivory.

I've probably destroyed the original value now. :frown:

That's easy to answer........

Take for instance Michael Jordan. Kids, even grown men who have watched him play back in the day, all were amazed at his skills and began hitting the black top immitating him in every way possible but it wasnt enough, next thing you know all were asking what brand of shoe was he wearing, what arm did he wear his armband on etc. What did it matter right? I mean its not like you are gonna end up playing or flying high like Mike, right? Most likely not but everyone loved trying to emmulate the greatest of all time. Basically these guys who ask what cue this what tip that yada yada yada would love to immitate the pool gods and how they play by buying a cue model that so and so uses or they switch to a tip that yada yada uses in hopes of harnessing some of the magic that they wish thier mortal skills could only wish to produce........

Isn't that what marketing is all about?

Jordan is a great basketball player............what kind of shoes does he wear?

Tiger is a great golfer.............what kind of ball does he use?

Armstrong is the best US cycleist...........what kind of bike does he use?

most of us

Most of us in some way are a bit obsesive compulsive or have a bit of
an addictive nature. I have seen leauge players actually think that if
they buy a scorpion cue that they will play a little more like Archer
I'm personally ok with that .I think the more we know about each player
the more it will do for pool as a whole .I really like what inside pool does
when they do "whats in the case ?" It gives you more of a insight to what
kind of person the player actually is .This keeps people intrested in the players
and the sport .

Yes, that is what marketing is all about. And those companies spend a small fortune paying for advertising to make sure everyone knows what they use.

Personally, it doesn't matter to me that Mike wears Nike....but Nike has spent a lot of money to make sure I know. I never had the urge to go and learn that piece of information for myself.

We don't know his shoe brand because it it important to us...we know it because it is important for the shoe company that we know it. But I also know that wearing those shoes isn't going to make me a better free throw shooter.

Hence, my original question. What makes pool players so different?

I really can't find your question in the opening of the thread. Perhaps I missed it.

Personally, I could care less what pros use. I do like to know what people are having success with, because I like to experiment once in a while. But the final outcome is what I like best and not decided because of what some pro is using.

I remember when Phil (lefty) said that tiger was using inferior equipment when switching to Nike. Then a few years later he switched to Callaway.
$$$ is a powerful thing.

I also like to watch "What's in the bag" and see what the pros are currently using for cues. It's good to know that I don't need a $10,000 dollar cue to shoot lights out.

Now if I could only get that cue that SVB has, I would be a pro in no time.
