why do people pay 40% to director?

Reading GSBT and seen they take $24 out of $60. That is 40% of the players money. Just wonder why people play in tourney like that. Winner of tourney gets $1000. They walk away with $2K to $3K. Just really don't understand. Please explain.

There aren't a lot of options in terms of tournaments to go to. If there were, believe me, we'd head to other tournaments.

In short, I agree with you, I think pots should be bigger on the player's end. The way this really SHOULD be looked at would be to consider the player has to WIN and probably will do so only frequently. Yet the TD will be there EVERY time collecting the money, so they should really take home less.

If they do in fact take that much, it is propably b/c they have to put up with nitty people like youself crying about why they didn't win $3000 to make it even remotely worth their while. Shannon and Marge are not making a killing I bet you that. I guarantee you I would not do it for the little bit they make to run a tour. Travel, food, hotel, their whole weekend shot just to provide a tournament for YOU. Just be thankful there is a tournament to play in. After all, nobody is forcing you to play in them.

Ok, i'm done.

here we go again. this has been discussed to death. it's obvious you're crying about it because you have the local torunaments that you post about that you support. good for you. local tournaments don't have to take as big a cut becasue you don't have to travel anywhere to run the thing. they have held plenty of GSBT events here in GA and i have never seen the winners cry about the cut like people like you do.
it's easy don't play in them. but for the love of god leave the people like marge and shannon and mike janis that run these things alone. there are those of us who appreciate the fact these people do all the work to bring these events to us.

Yeah, they don't make it home with $2-$3k after a tournament. Grossing and netting are WAY different. I might make over $1500 a week, but I sure a hell don't come home with that amount!

Just thinking about it, its pretty simple to understand.

Because it is a business and they are selling entertainment as a product.

Really no different than paying to go to an amusement park, or baseball game, or the movies, except with this type of entertainment you have a chance to get some money back at the end of the day.

Do I think it is fair for the price? Doesnt really matter what I think because apparently it is a price players are willing to pay, so its supply and demand.

They are the only supplier that I know of that put on that type of tournament and there is a demand for it, so its working.

In all, if you dont like it, dont play....and if you really feel that you can produce a better product for the players for a smaller percentage, then start your own tournaments.

They are performing a service by putting on the tourney. They are also providing entertainment of sorts. What is it worth? It is worth what a person is willing to pay. If a person doesn't like the cut/split of the cash, they don't have to play. If they are ok with it, then full speed ahead.

Let me ask you this original poster?? Do you play pool for a living?? Do you travel up and down the east coast running a tour?? I dont get it with all these thick headed people!!!

The amount of money spent to the amount of money earned isnt that much. Sure to you 40% is a big slice but why would somebody work for free??? DO YOU WORK FOR FREE??? No I didnt think so

You got some nerve calling peoples fairness into question!! Like said above if you dont like it the way it is than dont play in any of the GBST events!!!! Im sure that Shannon is more than fair when it comes to GUARENTEE pay outs to all the players!! A grand is a pretty sweet payout to the entry fee that is ponied up. Not to mention Shannon gives players entry spots to certain MAJOR events like the US Open and the 10 Ball Championship in March. I guess that money comes out of nowhere right?? Im sure that he steals that money from the players noses aswell....

The only problem you should have with this type of situation is a local tournament director stealing from players. Once a SO-CALLED BCA CERTIFIED INSTRUCTOR  (Mr. Steven Brown) ran a 8ball tourney with cock-o-mani rules at my local hall for a race to 5 double elim for $40 a player. Well guess what?? Our own Black-Balled won the 15 man event and got 200 for first. Second place got 100 and 3rd got 75.... You do the math  Thats a steap entry to get that low of a payout for that many players...

In this secnerio yes you can B*tch about the STEALING but for a guy and two others running up and down the coast to sustain a professional / amature tour?? Worlds apart my friend....

Oh and btw if Mr. Brown is reading this post your a complete and utter nit. Not to mention a low down dirty theif.... There!!!! I said it

"Yes I am calling about the tournament this weekend"?
"yes what can I do for you"?
"it says on the flier that it's 9 ball tournament"?
"yes it is"!
"Well I was just curious, are you playing 8 ball or 9 ball"????

Very, very few business models pay out 60% of revenue to employees.

Sounds like you are getting the better end of it.

If you disagree, and are in fact correct, run your own tournament.

I can't believe how posters attack the op for asking a simple question.

I play because it is fun and I enjoy the competition. The prize money is what it is. Take it or leave it.

Ahahhahahahahha. Your points are well taken. Please add, "Why am I in the same bracket with Straight-shooting so and so? I won't have a chance."

Some pool room owners are willing to sacrifice their weekends to direct their own tournaments. They not only sacrifice their weekends running the tournament but have to beg the players to play in the event for a month, listening to all of the laments that most TD's have heard.

When you have a Marge & Shannon team out there doing all of these things, the pool room owners recognize a good deal when they see one.

If you have a complaint about any supposed profit that they are making, you should be complaining to the pool room owner about it. I doubt that it will get you very far, especially when the pool room owner starts thinking about how much time he would have to spend running, promoting and listening to the whiners and just putting in all of the extra time it takes to run a tournament. It's not as easy as it looks.

Good to see that there are so many on here that understand that the folks running tourneys don't have to do it for FREE. It seems TOO MANY PLAYERS think all entry fees HAVE to go to the winner (and 2nd, 3rd, etc.). Why would ANYONE want to put on tournaments on their own dime? It's their INCOME. They are not taking 128 entry fees and paying out 28 of them....which is about what I would want to deal with all the CRAP!!! :o

The only tournaments that you are going to get all the money paid back is when ,an owner of a pool room is trying to show case his place and attrack more custumers for his every day business bye hosting a pool tournament(some will even add money to the pot),but in Shannon and Marges case they are on the road hosting these tournaments at other owners pool rooms, where is the only money they can possiably make is from some sponsers and money off the top from the entries of the players, they are making a very tough living on the road all the time,so lets just leave it at that!GOD BLESS MR AND MRS DALTON,for trying to keep pool a live!

Wait until you have heard as many as I have LOL

It is just a little dig and Joe handles it very well. We go back to about 1972-73.

As a player, I always have the option of "not playing".

When I hand over my entry fee I'm saying..........OK.
