Why Do So Many Conversions Have Butt Sleeves?

IMO, most conversions I've seen would look nicer if they just had a butt cap instead of a butt sleeve of BEM or something. Why are these butt sleeves put on? Is it simply an aesthetic choice or is a practical choice?

I suppose the maker might be trying to move the points further up on the forearm either due to simply to putting them where typical cues have them or the material near where the joint would go is too thin so they need to move down on the forearm which needs to be made up somewhere?!?!?

Sounds like a good guess. I personally like the aesthetics but I think its more to move the points up

I completely agree. I think butt sleeves look terrible on sneaky's. When I see one, I instantly think 1 of 2 things...

1. Cuemaker is a newbie and by the time he took down the blank it was so thin he had to bump the points up.

2. The blank was in terrible shape to start with and the cuemaker HAD to take off so much material that he had to add the butt sleeve to make the joint big enough.

a buttcap looks nice, but anything over 1.5 inches just looks like someone was trying to cover flaws.

Typically it is because someone has supplied the blank to the cuemaker, or the blanks that the cuemaker can find at the time are too thin at the joint area for their particular taper. A lot of these cues at the "joint line" (approx 29" from the butt) are simply too small to use. Thus they add a few inches to the bottom of the cue to give a thicker area at the 29" point. Voila.
 
trying to use all cues

a lot of the older brunwsicks are very crooked, and to get a conversion out of them i move the mass of the cue forward so i can end up with a straight cue. i find that sometimes i can by adding a 12 inch handle of new wood i can use the front of the one piece cue and to make a shaft that matches the color of the wood in the forearm. i am kinda new to rebuilding these old cues, and may be doing it all wrong, but i love the way the old wood feels with my wood pin. if you have any suggestions about how the conversions should be done please let me know. keep your head down, chuck

Aesthetics unless the blank's too thin.
 
If they are made from an old house cue it may be because the butt is damaged because of played hitting the floor with them.
