Why do some cue butts feel hollow?

Perhaps overdrilled holes and bad wood.
Guessing
Maybe cue butt wood is Bamboo???
Or possibly handle is cored with styrofoam???

Sorry via, seems everyone is in weird sorts at the moment, lol, myself included. Out of curiosity though are you speaking about custom cues, or production cues, high end, or low end?
BTW my buddies OB1 shaft feels hollow too, of course it is...
A lot of production cues bore into the butt and thread the opening so that a weight bolt can be inserted. The heavier the cue, the longer the weight bolt. Lighter weight cues use a shorter weight bolt that doesn't completely fill the area that was tapped out. That does create a hollow area in the butt of some cues.

because the cuemaker had to drill out the cue so he would have shavings for his hamster 
Sometimes the butts are cored with Hemp...so over time it gets hollowed out.

Put his question in Ask the Cuemaker. You may get a sincere answer. I know a lot of times I will post a humorous answer because it seems funny and obvious or I just got home from league play and am not feeling any pain.
