I hate going to the pool room now because there are not enough people who will just get up and play at any given moment. its like pulling teeth to try to get a game. so many spots and nitty people are killing the action of pool. i play poker now because i dont have to match up with anyone or spot anyone. i will play anyone in the world at pool as long as the game is somewhat fair. if i win, i win, if i lose, **** it. i just wish people would get up and gamble sometimes. i have been in a lot of 'bad games' in my life that i have outrun the nuts. it seems like there are not a lot of people who have the heart to get up and play anymore. im just talking about the average players, not the world beaters. but i will play them too if i can make a game.

Maybe those "nitty" people are asking for those spots because they think that is a fair game. You can't really get mad at someone else for underestimating their game. They just think they need more weight than you think they need.

For nothing.

I always have and still do enjoy beating someone for nothing. No bet, just the game and the thrill of the competition. I really like to beat the opponent to the point of excuse time. When they start with the excuses. Then I know I got their number. Pure pool, no money, no gamble. Skill against skill. Pool has always been the end for me, not the money. JMO

Refreshing to see that from someone else. I can't believe how often I watched guys literally get mad when they come up to me for a game and I say that I don't bet, but I'd be glad to "play" them. I get looks like I'm from another planet. I'll get, "oh, ok, how about for a drink?". I chuckle, "are drinks free now?"....isn't that the same as playing for money? Besides, your $4-$6 drink vs. my $1.50 pop sure sounds like a good idea to me. :)

Last week (I play on Thurs. nights - yep, just Thurs.) I had guy who seemed to not understand at all what I meant by, "I don't bet". I think I had to try and explain 3 or 4 different ways. First I said, "I'll play ya some". He said, "race to 5 for $20?" No, I'm not playing for money was my answer. Really???? I said, nope. How about for $10. I said, as far as I know, 10 bucks is still money. Well, we can play for drinks. I said, you pay for your drinks, and I'll get my free refills - LOL. He kept on, saying that I had beat him in league a couple of times, etc. I guess that was supposed to be the clincher for me....I finally said, look, you wanna play or not? I said I don't wanna play for money, that is what I meant. I don't care if there's a 75% or even higher chance of me winning...I DON'T CARE!

He finally played me a bit, and I musta won 10 of 15 games of 8 ball, and his comment when he moved on to another table - yep, see, you shoulda bet......It wasfree pool BTW too - just shooting after league, I get balls and a table (it's never PACKED, so no biggee) and practice.

I enjoyed the competition, and I'll do it again next Thurs. I'm sure I'll run into the same situation too. If someone won't play with no money on the line, I'll just shoot myself.

If i can get to Chicago this summer, i will play you for a diet coke. LOL

I was thinking pool, golf and pizza but we may have to hit up a gentleman's club too. They do have white girls there I am assuming :D

Take a Chance

One thing you can do is to buy a couple of $1.00 lottery tickets that pay out like $5000. Then you can play for the lottery tickets and tell everyone you are playing for $5000 a set. LOL

nope, not true

I see this all the time, "I make lots of bad games but I outrun the nuts." BS! If you are outrunning the "nuts" most of the time, you are the one underestimating your game and wanting a lock. By definition a totally fair game would mean that each person would win fifty percent of the time over the long run.

When people have to work hard to win a match up, they claim they outran the nuts. An expression I am tired of, simply because it ain't true. Nobody outruns the nuts more than once in a blue moon, a genuine fluke. You have to work your butt off to win a match up, good deal! That is what is supposed to happen if you matched up fairly.

I'll pick up the golf, pool, and za......as for "the ballet" (what me and my buddies call it), you may have to be on your own for that one. LOL Peoria does have WORLD FAMOUS BIG ALS though :) I have some buddies who come in town every year to play in a big softball tourney, and they get in a couple of rounds and hit Als too....I get bad looks from the wifey for doing that once a year - twice could be REAL bad :p

Don't do it!

Don't do it! There is life outside pool. Not getting a game isn't worth dying for! :D :D :D

I'll play ya if I'm there. No spot. Most likely won't be "fair" (Im just guessing you are better than I am). Then you come to the gamble part....heart has nothing to do with that. Do the little old blue-haired ladies sitting in front of the nickel slots have heart? Nope, just willing to lose money on a slim chance of winning some....I am not that. As I stated before, even if I have a 75% chance of winning - no money - just me.

That's correct!!!

I do many things for money. Never been much of a gambler though.
If i can't have some control over the outcome then my money will never be involved.
Gambling - to me is a 50/50 chance or less.
I prefer at least 75/25 in my favor. It's not about heart it is about brains.

I have friends that I try to get to the hall with me, but they don't wanna put up with people bugging them about gambling, so they just stay away.

Food for thought,

i had the same problem in Vegas in the earily 90's, nowdays I can find lots of fair but though action, it just depends on where you live and the time it is, i have seen action pop-up and then die down.

One step further.

I have had numerous situations when I was begged/talked into a money game. Then told I hustled them and they got mad. Not worth it! I really enjoy beating someone's brains out for FREE, they can't stand it!!! :D

I want to make a point that this isn't in reference to anyone in this thread or anyone else in particular but outrunning the nuts, breaking your opponent down has a lot more to do with simply being able to play for a longer period of time, whether it is with medicine or on the natural. Some pool players make sure they have medicine available just to accomplish that. This isn't a sermon, just a reality check. Doing either of the two doesn't mean you are a better player......

When simply saying I don't play for money is not enough, telling them I don't carry cash and only carry a credit card usually ends the conversation.

we are using a little different meaning of the term

Joey,

We are using a little different meaning of the term. Many on here seem to use the term for match ups of a few short sets when they feel that they gave up more than they should have and still won. That is the way I get tired of hearing it used. Hanging in and grinding it out when you start off down, I have nothing but respect for when it is done on the natch. Doing it on drugs can work but it doesn't command the same respect from me. Of course if you win the long grinds more often than not, I do think that makes you a better player at least in the long grinds.

The best shotmaker is often not the best player. At the end of the day the one that wins the most is the better player at least for that meeting, regardless of his opinion. Granted there is the occasional fluke that lets a lesser player win when two players are very close but the vast majority of time the people who get lucky put themselves in position to be lucky. I have beaten far better players than I am or was, but during that meeting I was the better player.

I was thinking the same thing when I saw that. Sounds like a lock artist who is complaining because nobody wants to play him.

The kid at DCC who spotted Grady 20-10 at one pocket was trying to outrun the nuts.
