why in the world 3 fouls is not..

Sean,

Read the new rules for BCAPL eight ball. That's exactly what they have done. Ball in hand anywhere on the table if your opponent scratches or fouls on the break. Ball in hand is the very essence of the Texas Express rules package. Only difference I see is "slop" is not allowed on any ball. Thank the pool gods for call shot in BCAPL eight ball.

Lyn

Lyn:

Thanks. I'm familiar with the BCAPL rules for 8-ball. I actually play one night a week on a traveling league that uses BCAPL rules.

I wasn't referring to the ball-in-hand rule when I mentioned Texas Express. I actually had the slop factor in mind -- you know, the "any ball, any pocket, as long as you hit [the lowest-numbered ball / your category of balls] first" thing. But you're right, when talking about the history of 9-ball, the very nature of Texas Express -- the one thing that made a huge difference in play in 9-ball vs the pushout rules -- is BIH. (9-ball was never a call-shot game, so Texas Express did nothing to change that.) I was referring more to the slop-izing of 8-ball with the other thing that comes along with Texas Express, non-call-shot.

Thanks for the clarification,
-Sean

Three strikes and your out

I come from an era of play where you made an attempt to pocket a ball first, then if you ended up safe, that was fine (continuous safe play was for 1 pocket). If you went for safe every shot, you would probably be carried out on a stretcher. Just different places, and different times I guess. I do not like the 9 ball rule either. I want to see the winner sink the 9, or the 8 in this case.

Three fouls in a row just can't work in 8-ball. Too easy for defensive players like myself. I could win half my matches without ever sinking the eight or even pocketing very many balls. I'm talking league pool. Basically people ain't crazy about defense anyway. If you start cramming it down their throats with the three foul rule they would be disenchanted with the whole league experience. The future of amateur pool lies with younger new players joining and having fun. We players that have played forever will always play, but recruiting new players should be the focus of League ops, not hanging onto current teams and veterans.

Rule

No 3 foul in 8 ball, but 8 ball does have a stalmate rule. Are you aware of it?:

YOu are stripes and you got BIH...what's the shot?

CueTable Help

Playing three fouls or not the shot for me would be to pocket the three while positioning the seven to the rail and tight to the eight ball. At the worse they might attempt to put the seven back in front of the eight or bank it. Either way I might get back up to the table again.

However the main questions is what crazy thing did he do to give me ball in hand? Without me having BIH it's a sure loss if we're playing three foul.

Why is there not a loss of game penalty for 3 consecutive fouls in 8ball???
8 ball lends itself more to this rule then 9 ball, and yet the rule applies only to
9.:(
Can someone from a rules committee explain this?
Thanks in advance,Jack

Because pool is a game with pockets....the winner should be the one that is better at putting balls in the pockets.....not some hack that just bounces balls off of rails....

Signed,

Not a rules committee guy....

P.S. I don't like the 3-foul rule in 9-ball either :D

A- You are stripes?
2- Crazy, yes. XXtreme, yes. Possible, Yes.

You can use your BIH to do a slight kick on the 7 just to get a sight on the 8 and lock the 7 up with the 3. Stalemates are for when you're either going to lose or you don't want to waste the time. ;)

Come on, you can come up with better than that! :p
