I have wondered for a long time why AZ is such a popular and busy forum yet pool in general has been declining for several years. Can anyone explain this?

It's like reading books... You read about facts, fiction, and maybe comics by Tramp.

Yeah, it is when it comes to guys who play pool and who follow pool but not with general public.

Overall, I don't think pool is really declining. I think pool as we've traditionally known it is declining, so the new generation of players has become less noticeable to those of us who spend most of our time on these forums, where we think we're popular.

Well put, Roger. I feel we are currently in a transition phase in the pool world. We can't "sense" it because it is slow. That's a great thing though because different things are happening and changing at once. These will in turn, have impacts on the industry as a whole. (butterfly effect).
Everything evolves, and as Roger says, it may be that the pool milieu as we knew it (for those aged 35-65, in particular) "looks and feels" different. This "decline" is perhaps just the Dark Age we need in order to move forward into the Renaissance.
Patience people; something great is going to happen—I just feel it! And the exciting thing about this is that it won't be a movie like "The Hustler" that made it happen, but through innovation and an enormous number of players in the world.
THAT IMPLIES THE CHANGE WILL COME FROM WITHIN.
WE'RE A MORE INFORMED AND INTELLIGENT INDUSTRY (AND POOL PLAYER) THAN WE WERE JUST 20 YEARS AGO, LADIES AND GENTLEMEN!!!!
HAVE FAITH IN THE INDUSTRY AND IN OURSELVES, NO MATTER WHAT IS HAPPENING OR ATTEMPTED. YES, THAT INCLUDES INNOVATIONS SUCH AS BONUS BALL!

Because many of us only access this site from work issued computers or phones, and thanks to the female avatars on here, we still get our fill of "adult material" without getting fired.

Strongly believe that after a post apocalyptic event... survival depends on you being a good standing member of AZ. A few positive Reps & iTrader points wouldn't hurt either. It could very well be that the next big announcement will be the one that saves us all. I have a family to support and will do whatever it takes, even if it means logging on 7 days a week at all waking hours to not miss out.
Pool related? Not so much...

I think it's because (for me, at least) out of the forty some thousand members that populate this site there are only four that I don't give a shit for. And, they know who they are.

I think thats a good part of it too Bruce, along with what Tramp said. Bruce has been known to make me laugh once in a while. I will probably never forget Bruce's pun about playing on a Chinese table. He might not even remember that one.
And of course, theres Tramp, who puts in his share for everyone.
Everyone has their favorite posters. As in everyday life, I enjoy most people. Some of them I would enjoy watching more being dragged behind a 4 x 4 but for the most part, I like everyone I meet in life.
A very diverse membership so you can always find something that makes your day whether it be some valuable info or just a good chuckle.
And as much as some devalue our Rep system, it is a nice ego boost, if you want to call it that to find out which members appreciate you on any given day.
Thats why I give out lots of Greenies. It can make someones day just fine. And myself, I always like getting a small Greenie message or a private PM.
Funny that with many friendships that we make on AZ, I can honestly say that altho I will probably never meet any of the members here, there are some bonds of friendship that I have formed that are stronger than some people I know in everyday life.
I have met a couple, Jim Baxter was one and always hope that our paths can cross at least one more time. I had a great time in Vegas one year and the high light was hanging with Jim for a couple of days.
