Why not Denver?

I have lived in Colorado for over 30 years and dont see tournaments with top end players in this neck of the woods:confused:. I know that the mile high city is kind of far away from the major pool hubs like Texas, Florida, California and the North East but I wonder if that the main reason. Denver has some great pool halls and certainly it is big enough to support a tourney once a year. I believe the pool culture is alive and well on the front range. They also have their fair share of strong players that play between Fort Collins and Colorado Springs. So I guess I am curious as to why others think it big time tournaments rarely happen in my neck of the woods?

Jim is jealous he has never seen a pro play in person:eek:.

I would think it is because we are out in the middle of nowhere. A lot of players simply can't afford to get here. I used to live in central NJ.
1 hour to Philly, 1 hour 30 minutes to NYC and 45 minutes to Atlantic City and under 2 hours to anywhere in the state and Maryland and Virginia were a half day drive. So you could afford to drive alone or share the ride with others and that made it cheap. So a player flies in, gets a room pays the entry fee and doesn't cash out. He could have stayed in Florida or California and would just be out the entry money. But don't get me wrong i would love to see it and if i could i would play just for the experience.

I would think it big money was offered, and in an ESCROW Account the Big Names would come. JMHO! Denver is not in the middle of no where, and they have a GREAT World Class Airport, and Coors BEER!

Well thats kind of what I thought. I would think it would be a boost for the game to try to hit areas that are pro pool starved.

Yes there is plenty of Coors in the area.......Hey they could be a sponser:wink:

Your right, Denver is not in the middle of no where, its just 600 miles from anywhere....one way.

I work near the Centiennial Airport and there is not one pool hall within 20 min of my work place (maybe Rack'em just north @ I225 & Parker). If you take in into consideration that all the pool halls are this spread out, it's no wonder you can't gather a bunch of people in one place for long.

I really don't think there is enough interest in real pool here. Sure the bar leagues are popular, played in one myself but most of the time when i talked about pro players or cues and cue makers i got a blank look.
I showed up for a big table 10 ball tournament at a local room $15.00 to enter and i didn't care who i played, just figured it would be a fun Saturday and not enough players showed up for an 8 person mini.

no reason

No reason why you cannot have a major pool event in Denver.

I can just see (Earl) blaming the altitude for getting hooked or something.

Just ask Frank Burgess about doing the Denver Open again and you will get the full explanation! Those were freat events, but Frank was worn out for a month afterwards and got no appreciation from the players or media at all!

If you know someone willing to put up the money for the evernt, just cntact Island Drive right here and I bet it will get done. If he isn't intrested ask how to get in touch with me!

There`s some bad a$$ players in the denver area. I`ve heard that SVB plays at ''Table Steaks'' on occassions. It doesn`t get any better than that seeing him play pool.

There are several very good players in Colorado....but with the possible exception of Haddad, no pros. Even he would be considered 2nd or 3rd tier pro. There used to be some decent tournaments in the Denver area including the Camel pro billiard tournament held each year. Lately, many of the old time pool halls are closing, or are threatening to close. The weekly tournaments are drying up. What tournaments are left are going toward the dreaded "bar box", and even these are not paying out much. As much as I have loved growing up in Colorado it is the absolute "pits" when it comes to pool.

Thats sad, where I live I bet there is not more then 10 tables between 4 towns. And everyone is a banger since Chisolm left town.

ican't help but think that when Terry mcFaddeen left, it legt a big void in the pool scene in the Denver area. Terry Frank Burgess and Leif kept it alive for many years.

I have been bouncing around the idea of a cue show/tournament like the west coast cue show or gem city classic for a while now. I would really like to put something together but it just does not look like it would really work out. I know I can get several well known cue makers here but the custom cue market is pretty small here in comparison to some other markets. As for the tournament getting enough prize money together to bring in the big players is tough. It is something I would really like to do but I think I will have to wait a while untill everyone has a little more money to play with.
If a sponsor wants to step up and lay down some cash we could do it this summer. How does the "first annual ted brown open" sound. LOL just a thought.

No stinking way Chris. Ted Brown is a monster player in colorado, it wouldn`t be fare to the rest of us ''D'' players. LOL Great idea you have there Chris.
