JoeyA,
Is Landon Shuffett on the US team?

Not as we speak. I'm sure pulling for him.

What a sensational opportunity it would be for such a talented, polite, respectful, young man. And what a reward it would be for him. The $25K would help pay for some of his very fine education.

Landon has been in front of the camera many times ever since he was a young boy and I feel like while he may not have the experience (because of school and age) of some of the older players, he would hold his own.

My perspective is Landon is made for television. It would give the commentators and the viewing audience to talk about for sure.

If anyone witnessed Landon playing Earl Strickland at the Southern Classic in Tunica, MS you would know that the young man has table presence, talent and class. Matchroom Sports and the Mosconi cup needs the persona of a Landon Shuffett.

And what a reward it would be for him. The $25K would help pay for some of his very fine education.

The team is not picked until after the US Open. People need to get off the idea of Landon being on the team. He is not even in the top 15 on the points list. He will not even be in the consideration. I am not bashing this exceptionally talented young man.

Read below

"Further down the ranking at 11th spot, veteran Johnny Archer will need a very big finish at the final event in the series - October's US Open - if he is to maintain his unbroken run of 14 successive Mosconi appearances."

Rob,
Points has nothing to do with whether Landon should be picked for the U.S. Mosconi Cup Team. The reason that Landon is not in the top 15 on the points list is because of his ongoing education. That comes first.

Personally, I wouldn't be a bit surprised if he is chosen to make this year's team.

The Mosconi Cup is not only about Europe and the USA's best players. It is about entertainment and what could be more entertaining than watching and pulling for such a young man to hold up under the pressure of the Mosconi Cup and help pull a win in for the United States of America?

JoeyA,
I agree with you about Landon. I was TD for the last 7 years at the Junior Nationals and witnessed Landon win 5 Junior titles in the 14 & under and 18 under divisions. Amazing player with an INCREDIBLE shot routine.

I watched the video of Landon playing Earl S. and was not surprised of him beating him. Just a week before he played great and won the BEF Junior Nationals before going to Tunica. To me personally I think he is one of the best junior talents the U.S. has had along with Jesse Engel, Austin Murphy and a few others.

Landon will play in December at the World Junior Championships in Germany. We (U.S.) are VERY well represented with Landon as well as other great junior talent such as Brendan Crockett and Brianna Miller and the other U.S. players.

That is why I had asked the question about Landon. No doubt he would be a great addition to the MC, but hopefully he can bring the U.S. some gold at the World Junior Championships first.

In the future MC, absolutely!

Just curious. What is Matchroom Sport and what is the process by which they nominated the US Captain of the Mosconi Cup?

I suspect that Matchroom is a European sports organization which runs the Mosconi Cup. I think having CJ is good, but suppose the US wanted another person as captain.

Thanks in advance.

Matchroom Sport is a COMMERCIAL organisation committed to producing a plethora of sport which they sell to TV stations worldwide.
Using their considerable acumen they put together the Mosconi Cup agenda purely on the basis of "will it be entertaining to a potential viewer.

If something is Box Office then it will form part of the mix.

Not quite sure who 'the US' is that you refer to in their post but their opinion would cut no ice with Matchroom, who are far more aware than 99.9% of the posters on this Forum.

Earl,

It wasn't a surprise to me that Landon beat Earl but what was suprising to me was how thorough of a thrashing that Landon unleashed on Earl. You seldom see Earl dominated like that.

The World Junior Championships in Germany in December may conflict with the Mosconi Cup which is also in December. The dates might be very important.

Do you have the dates for that event?

The Mosconi Cup is December 10-13, 2012.

The Junior event finishes a couple of days earlier.

So theoretically, Landon would be able to play in the Juniors in Germany and while he is on that side of the pond, still be able to make the Mosconi Cup in London with no problem. What a trip that would be!

Totally agree, Landon is a talented player but shouldn't make Mosconi Cup
team.
But Landon has way better credentials than the guy who was shamelessly trying to promote himself
as captain for the Mosconi Cup team, what a laugh that was, can't remember his name, not surprising though.

Thanks for the answer.

'the US' would be the fans in the US. So, when Matchroom Sports chose Charlie Williams as our coach, this was because they were far more aware than 99% of the posters on the AZ Forum? If they were so smart they should have chosen Earl as coach (having nothing against CJ). Or even Mike Sigel. I will tell you now Matchroom sports is not that much more knowledgeable than the AZ billiards forum people, if at all. It's just a publicity thing afterall.

Landon is a nice young man and a very good player, but there are many players that play better. I hope it is based on their speed and not popularity.

I suppose Wiley's Warriors is better than Wiley's Coyotes....

Tho maybe they can drop an Acme anvil on Team Europe....

Sorry. Couldn't help myself.

I am stoked about the Cup, for certain. Whoooooooo!

If you remember Pinkies, and there was one in Vegas:

Jeeterville....Bobby Goad already has the lock on Wiley Coyote, just ask Mark Estes, now with BCAPL.

Respectfully, I disagree with you this time, Joey.

IMHO, I do not think it would be fair to a lot of players to name Landon to the Mosconi Cup team. I certainly think that he is a great talent and the future of pool in the United States. He just hasn't worked his way to the top of the "food chain" yet. Aside from Junior tournaments, what has he really accomplished in pool? How has he fared in the small amount of big (professional) tournaments he has participated in? Dennis Hatch probably will not make the team and he is only several years removed from being the MC MVP. Earl Strickland has recent credentials for some tournaments wins of late and he won't be on the team either (unless it's for television appeal). Rodney, Corey, Shuff, Stevie, Oscar, Shawn, these are all people that finish high enough in the money of ranking tournaments to make the list of "possibles". They EARNED their right by playing pool, not because they are somebody's favorite.

I think that given time, we're gonna see Landon in many future Mosconi Cup matches. I can't wait to see the day when our current crop of "young guns" rises to the occasion. He needs to do a lot more than beat Earl Strickland in a quarter-final (I think it was) 10-ball match to get there. He's going to have to earn his way there much like the rest of the MC competitors have over the years.

I just think there are more deserving players, politics aside.

Just one man's opinion. Take care, my friend!!!

Very well stated and I have to agree,

except for the part about Dennis Hatch as he, if I'm not mistaken is third in the points at this time prior to the U.S. Open 9-Ball Championship. So I'm not sure why you would say he probably will not make the team. The Open being the last points event before the remaining players are picked by Matchroom, and as stated they will be taking the points into consideration when making their picks.
So I guess his performance in the Open will probably be the deciding factor.

Brandon Shuff, Larry Nevel, Rob Saez, Hunter Lombardo, Hennesse, Bennet, Joey Grey, Chip Compton, Donnie Mills, Charlie Bryant just to name a few who play better.

Ok, thanks. That is what I was looking for.

If you have any others to name to the list, please add them in this thread.

Maniac,

I understand what you are saying and while it has some merit, the bottom line is the Mosconi Cup is an entertainment event made for television.

Landon Shuffett at his current age, is a perfect fit for this television event.

I have my own perspectives about the Mosconi Cup and how certain people perform at this event and believe that the youth hold the future success for the U.S.A. Mosconi Cup Team because of the type of event that it is.

Whether Landon destroys his opponents or falls flat on his butt, his presence would send the Mosconi Cup to new heights. Landon is sort of the antithesis of Earl when it comes to demeanor and table presence. That being said Earl would still be a great draw for the Mosconi Cup.

I look at the Mosconi Cup as more than a competition of the best players in Europe and the U.S.A. It is a marvelous and successful spectacle in the literal sense, designed especially for television. The people at Matchroom Sports will make their decision based upon what is good for the Mosconi Cup.

It doesn't make any difference to me if Landon makes the team this year or not. Landon is the epitome of what an American Pool Player should be and what any Mosconi Cup Player should want to be.

As far as "earning" the right to represent the U.S.A., Landon in my opinion has already done that with the lifestyle, education, character and the talent that he regularly exhibits wherever he goes.
