Wood Joining Technique Opinion Question

"fades in, fades out"
Without multiple cues to try to determine this on my own I wold appreciate your input's on this. Which type of wood joining technique produces the most hit feedback to the hand, pronged or screwed together?

Thanks.

Thanks, I kind of thought so. Are there any advantages one over the other? From a materials stand point that is. My interest is in educating myself technically before I decide to purchase purely on aesthetics. It's the geek in me....

The feel you are talking about is the one you get with a 1 piece cue.

In order for a cue that is constructed from parts to feel like a one piece cue, the final assemble must resemble a one piece cue as close as possible.

All the parts must fit correctly and the ends of all the parts must butt firmly and squarely against one another. There can be no voids left in the assembly. A good solid glue must be used. Epoxy or Gorilla glue are probably the best.

The only real consensus is that there must be some kind of threaded connection to insure a continuous feel. Actual threaded wooden parts on the assembly tenon or a threaded piece of metal is usually used.

What is most important is the actual mechanical connection before glue is applied.

just my opinion

Most of today's most highly respected and sought after makers screw the fronts to the handles. A few don't. It really doesn't affect playability but some of the proponents of either method aren't particularly concerned with the actual real world experiences of the masses.

many different methods

are used by different makers to get different feels, and since feel is subjective you are going to get many different opinions.
i found this method on azb and i think it gives the best, most solid feedback.

taper the butt in one piece until its just over finished size. from the front of the handle area, turn the back of the cue to a dowel .75 inch. then drill the handle and butt cap material to .75 inch. sand the dowel until the handle and buttcap fit but leaving enough space for your adhesive. glue it up and take your last pass or sand to finish size.
assembly like this gives you the oppertunity to add different materials for the handle and buttcap, but leaves the cue one solid piece of wood from the joint to the butt. this is how i make my cues with the elk antler handle.

First off... love your avatar!

Secondly, as stated already there are numerous factors that determine hit and feel both of which are highly subjective.

Hi,

To the OP:

The hit or feel is subjective and you have to judge for yourself.

To Bob:

Thanks for you views and points about our slippery slope.

I agree with you post comments but would add that it is the international bankers who have controlled our leaders into the corruption that seeks to make us slaves and class warfare is one of their best tools.

Every right we lose will be gone forever. I can't wait to here that we are doing well as a nation when milk is 7 bucks a gallon.

There is an old saying used by politicians, "the bigger the lie. The easier it is to get away with". There are some mighty big ones out there today.

Grest to see you back Rick.

My mom (90) tells the story of when I was a little kid she pointed at a loaf of bread and said "You watch, someday they will be asking .25 cents or more for that"

I may buy a cow as a Pet, have to check the Condo bylaws.

"pronged or screwed together?"....uummm...i don't get it. did you mean 1pc vs 2pc?

Prong splice VS screw together parts

Hey, I guess I should clarify that this is in reference to how on a 2 piece cue the handle and sleeve sections are joined. Are there any mechanical strength advantages of one over the other?

Thanks.

This is 'Ask the Cuemaker'. It is a given that you're talking about a two piece cue.
