Who Else?

I am looking forward with great anticipation for this event. I will be there during the last few days...arriving Thursday. Anybody else going to attend? Hopefully there is a pool room, or two nearby for some practice during the evenings.

Easy Ryan. I wasn't implying that Orcullo plays better straight pool than any of the straight pool experts. That's part of the whole debate that I'm trying to bring up. Can a rotation specialist compete against the best in the world in straight pool? It isn't unprecedented, considering Efren won a title in 95 and Manalo won a title last year (though I don't know if Manalo is considered a rotation specialist).

Besides, think of Orcullo's win over Ortmann in the Hard Times IPT qualifier final. 8-ball is closer to straight pool than any other game, and Orcullo beat a straight pool specialist in 8-ball. Granted, that was only one match.

I personally think that Ralph Souquet will take the title. His methodical game is perfect for straight pool. I wouldn't bet against any of the Germans (Engert, Hohmann, Ortmann).

I was just asking for opinions, and your opinion is duly noted. Good luck in the event.

John Schmidt

I'm picking Schmidt to do well, although his 9-ball game seems off lately. He's in a tough bracket with Hopkins and Hohman; but if he leaves the prima donna routine in the hotel, he should cash, or even make the top 4.

DOn't disagree with most of them but surely picking young Nico in group 5 over these three is a mistake?

FIN Mika Immonen
USA Jose Garcia
CAN Luc Salvas

PS
Top 4 go through (I hope!)

Do not forget he Nicolas was second in the europeans championships in 2005 beating Tom Storm in the semifinal. Losing of Hohmann in teh finals. Storm allready is a 2 time european Straightpoolchamp + 1 time silver medallist!!

Jasmin makes a 100 every two weeks so i would not rule her out the make the last 32. 4 of 8 go through right!!

On to the matter of who will win the event.

My pick to win the title, which will surprise nobody, is Thorsten Hohmann, whose performance at the 2005 European Straight Pool Championships surely rates as one of the greatest ever straight pool efforts. In addition, Hohmann won over an elite field in his only appearance in the NJ Straight Pool Championships, and earned great praise from his fellow competitors, some of them Hall-of-Famers.

There are many who pose a threat, and I'll say that Thomas Engert is the one most likely to beat Thorsten out of this title.

I agree.

Engert (High run 491) and Hohmann (High run 404) are simply better at this game than everyone else right now IMHO

Danny Barouty: 287
Tony Robles: 267
Archer has a 200 unfinished.

Sigel, Varner and Garcia have all run over 300. What do you consider "still playing big events"?

How about 3 of the top 4 finishers being German....you heard it here first :)

I agree with that. Toastie just plays 14.1 at a different level than the rest of the world. He says that he is playing very well and thats dangerous for the rest of the field. Ralf just won the BCA, and he and Thorsten practice together quite often. Engert just isn't human once he enters the zone, I will go out on a limb to say he might have the high run of the tournament, and he is capable of winning the whole thing.

Very true...and don't forget Oliver Ortmann... The Machine is playing very well right now with great success in getting his IPT card and winning 2 of the 3 disciplines at the Euros this year!

Engert, Hohmann, Ortmann and Souqet....an amazing quartet!

How's about Munich Spaten? ;) Really, the only non-German beer worth its barley is Grolsch.

P.S. In the U.S., that is.

Mike Has 1 of the best 14.1 games i have ever seen...rumor has it that Mosconi and another player watched Mike Sigel run 150 and out on Mike Zuglan and then Mike Zuglan came back and ran 148 and out on Ray Martin. (both on tape at accustats) Mosconi leaned over to the other player and supposidly made the statement "that man has more heart than anybody i have seen in a long time". That said after MZ ran the 148 and out after losing 150/0...................mike

Zuglan actually ran 2 and out against Martin. The 148 came before that, and Mike wanted to shoot himself in the head for getting out of line with two balls to go and missing a combo.

While JL is not the equal of the very top men in straight pool - she's NOT that far away.

her high run is only A++ level.
i love her dedication and passion for 14.1....she truely LOVES the game, but she's so far away from top level 14.1, it's not even funny.

As far as Americans how can you dtermine what the top level of 14.1 competition is in the US? She has run over a 100 numerous times and has run over 150 in 3 different rooms that I know of. She beat JR Gay for the chedder playing games to two hundred he quit after two games. A little shorter in the pocket and with a bruised ego. Would you consider him a top player? He has run over 300 balls. I watched her beat Mark Jarvis, and JR Gay playing straight pool. Her best game may be straight pool she is no automatic bye. I think a lot of pool players are having a hard time realizing that the gap between Men and Women is closing very quickly. I do not think she will win by any means. (I think a German has the advantage Thorsten, Thomas, and Oliver play so strong its unbelievable) She has a chance to advance past the group stages. Both Jeanette and George play 14.1 better then the average bear. I have run over 80 balls at least 10 times and won the only two straight pool leagues I have ever played in and am somewhat of a student of the game due to my linnage and JL has game at 14.1
