Qualifying Tournaments
The latest big name taking a shot at the qualifiers is Alex Pagulyan.
He joins compatriots Roberto Gomez Jr, Lee Van Corteza, Joven Bustamante, Jeff da Luna, Marlon Manalo, Gandy Valle, Ramil Gallego and Warren Kiamco making 9 major names seeking only 8 spots. That is without the European challenge of Marcus Chamat, Fabio Petroni, Karl Boyes and Darren Appleton.
Looks like it's going to be an interesting week.

I don't understand your post, the way it is written, "without the European challenge." :o

Does that mean that Marcus, Fabio, Karl, and Darren are not competing in the qualifier?

Inquiring minds want to know this kind of stuff! :D

I am the source. But a full list of players was not going to be published until Monday as players are still entering. This was done to encourage entries but I suppose that the players that are posted earlier in the thread are a daunting enough prospect for any potential entrants. So I will probably double check it and post it later today

Not half Doug. Just talked to Ahmed 5 mins ago and he mentioned they already have at least 64 pre-registrations just from players outside UAE for the whole 5 tourney package.

Shouldn't there be Americans and Taiwanese players in there, too (not to mention the various other countries where 8-ball is played)? Europe and the Phillipines are not the only two areas of the world included in a "World Championship", right?

pro9dg listed the players participating in the qualifying tournament. The list of the players who don't need to qualify can be found here.

How they choose who doesn't have to qualify is beyond me. How Gabica and Casalang got picked over Filipinos such as Gomez, Pagulayan, and Manalo is beyond me.
 
According to the news, Efren Reyes, Francisco Bustamante, Alex Pagulayan, Lee Van Corteza, Warren Kiamco, Rodolfo Luat and Ramil Gallego, were all invited but have yet to comfirm their participation.

In general, each country or confederation will have a procedure to choose who goes to international tournaments. The organizer of the event, the host country or confederation, and the WPA may have wildcard spots which they can use as they please. In addition, it seems that 8 spots will be determined by qualifiers at the venue.

As to how the APBU/BSCP selected the representatives, I have no clue. Maybe it is according to a specific national ranking list in the Philippines. Often the world rankings are taken into account for this sort of thing. That's at http://www.wpa-pool.com/index.asp?content=players_men
 
Pro9dg, AzHousePro, Darren......just learned that my business partner will be unable to cover for me in Abu Dhabi so looks like I won't be there during any of the the qualifying tournament days in Fujairah. Still hoping to get up there for a day or two during the actual event but even that's a bit iffy now.

My local mobile telephone will of course still be on if anybody needs any assistance or advice about UAE.
 
Canada

I know in Canada we send the top two finishers in our Canadian 8-Ball Championships to the event which is the number of spots that have been passed to the Canadian Governing Body for pool to award.

I'm sure there are other ways players get in concerning invites but one of the things the WPA tries to do is get a good collection of players representing many different courntries with a governing body that support the game.

You are not going to always get the best players this way but you get a World represntation.

Not only that, but I'm would guess you'd get an argument from the ENGLISH competitors, who absolutely do NOT consider themselves a part of Europe...hence why England considers the Euro to be 'foreign currency'!:D

"Fellow Bugsy boys and members of the Billiards Managers and Players Association of the Philippines (BMPAP) in 2007 World Pool runner-up Roberto Gomez, former Asian Games gold medalist Gandy Valle and rising star Joven Bustamante will try to join Alcano and Orcollo in the main draw as they will compete in the qualifying tournaments from April 12 to 16.

Pool legend Efren ?Bata? Reyes, the inaugural edition champion in 2004, along with Francisco ?Django? Bustamante, Alex Pagulayan, Lee Van Corteza, Warren Kiamco, Rodolfo Luat and Ramil Gallego, were also invited but have yet to comfirm their participation.

Besides Alcano and Orcollo, the other world-renowned players seeded in the main draw are Wu, Peach, reigning world 10-Ball titlist Shane Van Boening of the United States, and former World Pool champions Ralf Souquet and Oliver Ortmann of Germany.

The field will also have a lone female entry in Jasmin Ouschan of Austria, and a touch of royalty with the participation of Brunei's Crown Prince Muhtadee Billah."

LOL! This may be true, but it ain't true with some of the so-called "Britans" and other European AzB-ers who post their opinions about who's who in the European Union on the AzBilliards Discussion Forum. :p
