Shock News
Wu is not defending his WPA World 8 Ball title

The World 8 Ball Championship will kick off in Fujairah without defending champion Wu Chia Ching. There is no official reason but it is believed that the teenage prodigy has a long standing family committment

But players who will be cueing up for a share of the $110,000 prize money will include reigning World 9 Ball champion Ronny Alcano. He will be hard pressed by his compatriots Efren Reyes, Francisco Bustamante and Dennis Orcullo.

Play starts on 2nd March and the final of the 64 man event will be on the 8th.

There are ten international qualifying spots up for grabs and these will come from ten events held in Fuairah from 21st February onwards. They all carry low entry fees and an additional bonus for the ten winners will be a place in the Middle East 9 Ball Open
Championship which finishes on 28th February.

The qualifiers are open to all comers and details can be acquired by emailing a request to pro9wc@yahoo.co.uk and copy it to ahmed9888@hotmail.com.

Are there any American pool players already on the player roster today?

The Filipinos will be tough to beat. There are some American players who I think would give them a run for their money, though, if they do get qualified and/or "invited."

John Schmidt, the current U.S. Open champ would be a GREAT addition to the player roster, IMHO! :)

Is there a website for the World 8-ball that I could check?

Here's the AME, the "Ultimate Middle East Radio," link. You need your speakers on, but it has pictures and some print. They talk about last year's winner as "The Magician.," and Mike Massey is in the house. Must be an old clip. :p

Hello Jennie

No Americans. They had four spots in this event but there seems to be nobody responding to the invitation. I think that the high cost of flying USA-UAE may be a factor. This exceeds the $500 guaranteed to first round losers. Charlie Williams considered accompanying Thorsten Hohmann who is participating in the tournament, but decided otherwise.

Max Eberle made the trip last year and there is a chance to qualify which should be a reasonable prospect to experienced US players.
The American presence has been rather sparse in this event - Johnny Archer lost in the final four years ago.
Jeremy Jones has made the trip and so has Earl Strickland. But 'The Pearl'
was on the wrong end of a 0-11 scoreline in a semi final against Efren Reyes two years ago.

So if you fancy making the trek from the States ask for a copy of the Qualification Info Sheet on pro9wc@yahoo.co.uk

...Oh, and the tournament conditions were absolutely top notch too!

Anybody know if we will be able to watch this event on ESPN Asia or some other network like the WPC 2006?

Great link JAM,
I'm listening now to some very professional commentary discussing the 8-Ball event. They are treating this event like a major international event there!

btw: Here is the official site for the event:

Colin

btw: Good luck to my Aussie mates Alec Evreniadis and Ben Nunan who are playing.

This website was dead. No the list of players, no the results of qualifying tours, no any update......:(

yeah. I definitely agree. This is the worst pool website..ever. No updates, no schedule of matches and not even a list of playes. This website is a joke.

Does anybody know if we can watch the matches live via webcast like last year's 9ball WPC in Manila using the TVU of any other player?

The organizers tell me they will update the site every day after the rounds are complete. We just started two hours ago and so an update should occur no later than 8PM UAE time (11 AM EST).

Where is Efren in all of this? He won two years ago, and seems to always go to the 8-Ball WCs. ...is he a no show?
