World Cup of Pool 2014(Portsmouth, UK) 23-28Sep (9ball Scotch Doubles) Winner $60K

I only saw the second half of the match, but it was a good one. USA made a nice comeback from 7-2 down to tie the score at 7, thanks in part to some loose play by England. Shane seems to be a calming influence on Earl and he played like vintage Earl, coming with several nice shots. In the end it was Darren's solid play that won for England. The man is a rock!

Kudos to USA for a good showing. Interesting that all four semifinal teams are from Europe. Thorsten told me last month in the Philippines that there are many good players now in Europe, that are pushing everyone to get better. It showed up this week! Any one of the remaining four teams can win this and that's a good thing.

I wonder how many of these guys will be at the U.S. Open in two weeks. I would think most of them should come.

You point out all of Team USA's faults and don't seem to mention anything that Team England did wrong. You'd make a great commentator!

Story of this match was that Team USA dug too deep a hole with pretty weak play in the early stages, and it was too late when they found their form.

Still, I thought they showed some courage and give them credit for it. This has never been a good event for the USA, but this year we were pretty competitive, and it may bode well for 2015.

Keep the faith.

Good analytical summary of what just transpired. Well said!

Of course, it does help that England has two bites (two teams) at the apple in this world event.

I love that blondie on Finland's team. Guess I'll have to switch horses and pull for Finland now. :p

Wasn't able to watch...anyone know when ESPN3 replays are available?
The replay should be available immediately. I doubt if genipool14 will have this match available for at least an hour. Even if he's downloaded by now, he'd have to upload it and wait for YouTube to process it.

This has never been a good event for USA, really because Shane & Rodney won this event. As far as Earl getting in Shane's head like Wych said. I disagree Shane's a grown man with a lot of respect for Earl and I think he wants and likes to hear Earl's opinion. That doesn't mean he's always going to shoot it Earl's way, as he is a great player in his own right. Give Shane some credit.

I realize people like to get down on Earl, but I'm not one of them, each to their own,
I guess.

Finland's record by year:

2012: 5-0 champion
2013:t 3-1 tied for 3rd
2014: 3-0 tied for 3rd or better

That 11-1 in their last 12 matches. Finland seems to have it down pat at the World Cup of Pool.

Yes, ESPN3 rocks.

I agree
It's always Earl done wrong . Nothing about him bailing Shane

The match started off as a dud but when the US finally got a couple of rolls it became very exciting. Even the nay-sayers would have to admit that Earl can still hang with the best in the world. As for the commentary, positive or negative comments simply followed the level of play for both teams.

Interesting match.

Shane badly missed the two ball early, but it shouldn't have mattered, except then Earl missed a simple safety. Next time up, Earl had to kick and fouled. In rack 11, Earl's poor safety gave England control of the rack, but Shane bailed him out with a fantastic shot five ball and made a fine carom on the nine ball in rack 12. Worst of all, as Jimmy Wych noted, Earl got into Shane's head in this match by being a control freak.

But then, Team USA found its form and made a match of it, but a dry beak in rack 15 proved fatal, with England A winning by 9-7.

The better team won, but Team USA fought bravely. Nice match.

ESPN3 rocks!
.

You are spot on that Shane bailed him out. But later on, Shane left Earl extremely difficult and Earl made an amazing shot that the CB was headed toward the side then the corner. His shot was amazing to stay out of harm's way, and play near perfect cb speed.

Both players shot equally impressive and made the difficult shots when they needed to, but that is what their speed players do, isn't it?

Again, I think the break may have been the difference...not necessarily making balls on it, but Europe had much better looks after the US dry breaks.

Seams to me that the shot clock format gives a huge advantage to the team that rolls out.
You get 60 seconds after the break but after that there is a 30 second shot clock. The team pushing out can use the full minute to decide where to push to and decide what they will do if it is given back. The incoming team gets 30 seconds to decide weather to play the shot or give it back and to decide what to do and the try to execute the shot.Ofc most push-outs are given back...

Shane helped Earl with his break before the match with England A and it showed,Earl had been having trouble getting the required 3 balls beyond the head string.Unfortunately Earl seamed to be in the wrong frame of mind for scotch, early
in the match and by the time they recovered they had no room to overcome a bit of a roll by the Brits.
